Summary: A scoping review found that there is limited support for quality indicators (QIs) to assess acute hospital care for injured older patients, revealing important gaps in the current QIs. Further research is needed to establish a set of QIs specific to older trauma patients to improve the quality of care and outcomes.

Summary: The background development has led to longer and healthier lives, but the increasing proportion of older adults presents new challenges to health systems. This study aimed to develop equity indicators for the ACOVE-3 checklist and conduct cross-cultural adaptation and validation in Portuguese. The checklist, composed of equity and quality indicators, proved to be a useful tool in improving monitoring of vulnerable older people's clinical situation and planning of medical and social actions.

Summary: This study utilized administrative data to build a model predicting mortality in hospitalized older adults with COVID-19, finding associations between various factors like male sex, Asian race, chronic kidney disease, and mechanical ventilation with mortality. While age was not an independent predictor, interactions with hypertension, early Do-Not-Resuscitate preferences, and illness severity were observed.

Summary: This cross-sectional study assessed the association between municipal characteristics and the place of death among care-dependent older people in Japan. The study found that municipal characteristics explained a substantial proportion of the geographic variance in in-home death. Municipal policy makers need to ensure an adequate supply of clinics, physicians, and care workers to meet the preferences of care-dependent older people who wish to spend their final days at home.

Summary: An individualized, multicomponent exercise program can effectively reverse the functional and cognitive decline in older patients during acute care hospitalization. Improvements in cognition mediate improvements in physical function, with cognitive function enhancements shown to have a significant impact on physical function improvements after exercise training.

Summary: This study investigated the functional profile of older adults hospitalized in Portugal and found that older age, no school attendance, low body mass index, and sad or depressed mood were predictive factors for a deficit in functional capacity. The findings can help prioritize intervention groups and develop quality and financing models based on gains in functionality.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between intrinsic capacity (IC) and adverse outcomes of hospitalization. The results showed that a higher IC score was associated with lower rates of in-hospital death and hospital-associated complications, higher rates of discharge to home, and shorter length of hospital stay. Evaluating IC can help predict hospitalization outcomes.
