Purpose To compare the patient-reported, clinical, and radiographic outcome of 2 methods of internal fixation in distal radius fractures. Methods Fifty patients, mean age 56 years (range, 21-69 years) with primarily nonreducible or secondarily redisplaced distal radius fractures were randomized to open reduction internal fixation using volar locking plates (n = 25) or fragment-specific fixation (n = 25). The patients were assessed on grip strength, range of motion, patient-reported outcome (Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand), pain (visual analog scale), health-related quality of life (Short Form-12 [SF-12]), and radiographic evaluation. Grip strength at 12 months was the primary outcome measure. Results At 12 months, no difference was found in grip strength, which was 90% of the uninjured side in the volar plate group and 87% in the fragment-specific fixation group. No differences were found in range of motion and the median Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand score was 5 in both groups. The overall complication rate was significant, 21% in the volar locking plate group, compared with 52% in the fragment-specific group. Conclusions In treatment of. primarily nonreducible or secondarily redisplaced distal radius fractures, volar locking plates and fragment-specific fixation both achieve good and similar patient-reported outcomes, although more complications were recorded in the fragment-specific group. Summary: The research examined biomechanical properties of the common carotid artery in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), finding that strain and stiffness were associated with factors like age, disease characteristics, and traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Strain showed associations with AS-related factors and age, whereas stiffness was only associated with age, indicating different pathogenic vascular processes.

Summary: Acta Radiologica celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2021, evolving from single-author verbose monographs to a truly international cadre of multi-author collaborations. The journal has seen significant increases in published articles, issues per year, and printed pages over the past century. The Foundation has established two prizes to encourage academic research, and the growing number of manuscript submissions indicates a promising future for the journal.

Summary: Over the last 100 years, musculoskeletal radiology has evolved from basic bone radiography to a dedicated subspecialty covering all imaging modalities. It heavily relies on cross-sectional and functional imaging and plays a vital role in tumor diagnosis and joint diseases. These developments are reflected in Acta Radiologica, as highlighted in this review.

Summary: In this study, it was found that patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) did not have a higher prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) compared to matched controls. AS patients with OSA had higher BMI, were older, and had lesser chest expansion due to more severe AS compared to patients without OSA.

How good is the agreement between clinical diagnoses and classification criteria fulfilment in axial spondyloarthritis? Results from the SPARTAKUS cohort

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the agreement between clinical diagnoses of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and fulfilment of the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society (ASAS) axSpA and modified New York (mNY) classification criteria, and to compare disease/health status among axSpA subtypes. The study found an overall good concordance between clinical axSpA diagnoses and classification criteria fulfilment, with weaker concordance among axSpA subtypes. Clinical undifferentiated axSpA diagnoses could not serve as a proxy to identify non-radiographic axSpA, highlighting the importance of thorough classification in axSpA subtype research.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the significance of splenic volume in COVID-19 patients and correlate it with the volume of lung changes. The results showed that splenomegaly was not statistically correlated with the severity of the disease, but splenic atrophy or progressive splenomegaly was correlated with severe COVID-19 presentation and cytokine storm.
