A novel series of Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) mononuclear complexes have been synthesized involving a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, which was obtained by condensation of 2-aminophenol with 2,5-thiophene-dicarboxaldehyde. The complexes were synthesized via reflux reaction of methanolic solution of the appropriate Schiff base ligand with one equivalent of corresponding metal acetate salt. Based on different techniques including micro analysis, FT-IR, NMR, UV-Vis, ESR, ESI-mass and conductivity measurements, four-coordinated geometry was assigned for all complexes. Spectroscopic data have shown that, the reported Schiff base coordinated to metal ions as a dibasic tetradentate ligand through the phenolic oxygen and the azomethine nitrogen. The antimicrobial activities of the parent ligand and its complexes were investigated by using the agar disk diffusion method. Antioxidation properties of the novel complexes were investigated and it was found that all the complexes have good radical scavenging properties. The binding of complexes to calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated by absorption, emission and viscosity measurements. Binding studies have shown that all the complexes interacted with CT-DNA via intercalation mode and the binding affinity varies with relative order as Cu(II) complex > Co(II) complex > Zn(II) complex > Ni(II) complex. Furthermore, DNA cleavage properties of the metal complexes were also investigated. The results suggested the possible utilization of novel complexes for pharmaceutical applications.

Summary: Novel nano-sized metal complexes derived from ACV were synthesized and characterized, showing good thermal stability and nano-scale size. Enhanced antimicrobial and antitumor activities were observed upon complex formation, with the Cu(II) complex potentially inducing cancer cell death through apoptosis/necrosis pathways. The Cu(II) complex also exhibited stronger binding affinity to DNA compared to the free ligand. The electrical conductivity measurements indicated that the complexes behave as semiconductors.

A facile hydrothermal synthesis of novel CeO2/CdSe and CeO2/CdTe Nanocomposites: Spectroscopic investigations for economically feasible photocatalytic degradation of Congo red dye

Mostafa A. Sayed, M. M. Abo-Aly, Ayman A. Abdel Aziz, Amr Hassan, Abdel Naby M. Salem

Summary: The photocatalytic activity of CeO2 nanoparticles can be significantly enhanced by incorporating narrow band gap semiconductors like CdSe and CdTe, forming nanocomposites with a heterojunction structure to improve visible-light absorption efficiency. The synthesis of CeO2/CdSe and CeO2/CdTe nanocomposites through a simple hydrothermal route at a 1:1:1 molar ratio was successful without the need for expensive surfactants or capping agents. Characterization using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM confirmed the structure of the materials, while BET surface area measurements showed the high surface areas of the nanocomposites. The photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposites was excellent, with CeO2/CdSe exhibiting a degradation efficiency of 97.3% under visible-light irradiation in the degradation of Congo red dye.

Chloride-binders and their effect on the physico-mechanical properties of sulfate-resisting cement (SRC) hardened pastes upon exposure to sea water attack

Summary: The national strategic plan in Egypt supports the establishment of new towns and urban settlements along the coast to relieve pressure in the Nile Valley and Delta, while also encouraging internal migration to these areas. A research program has been designed to address the effects of sulfate and chloride attack, utilizing sulfate-resisting cement and chloride-binders for concrete preparation and steel protection. Initial findings show that these compounds can delay setting time, but improve workability, alkalinity, and compressive strength in hardened pastes exposed to seawater.
