Diseases caused by motile aeromonads in freshwater fish have been generally assumed to be linked with mainly Aeromonas hydrophila while other species were probably overlooked. Here, we identified two isolates of non-A.hydrophila recovered from Nile tilapia exhibiting disease and mortality after exposed to transport-induced stress and subsequently confirmed their virulence in artificial infection. The bacterial isolates were identified as Aeromonas jandaei and Aeromonasveronii based on phenotypic features and homology of 16S rDNA. Experimental infection revealed that the high dose of A.jandaei (3.7x10(6) CFU fish(-1)) and A.veronii (8.9x10(6) CFU fish(-1)) killed 100% of experimental fish within 24h, while a 10-fold reduction dose killed 70% and 50% of fish, respectively. When the challenge dose was reduced 100-fold, mortality of the fish exposed to A.jandaei and A.veronii decreased to 20% and 10%, respectively. The survivors from the latter dose administration were rechallenged with respective bacterial species. Lower mortality of rechallenged fish (0%-12.5%) compared to the control groups receiving a primary infection (37.5%) suggested that the survivors after primary infection were able to resist secondary infection. Fish exposed to either A.jandaei or A.veronii exhibited similar clinical signs and histological manifestation.

Tilapia Lake Virus was not detected in non-tilapine species within tilapia polyculture systems of Bangladesh

Partho Pratim Debnath, Nguyen Dinh-Hung, Suwimon Taengphu, Vuong Viet Nguyen, Jerome Delamare-Deboutteville, Saengchan Senapin, Chadag Vishnumurthy Mohan, Ha Thanh Dong, Channarong Rodkhum

Summary: Sixteen countries have reported the presence of tilapia lake virus (TiLV), an emerging pathogen affecting tilapia. In Bangladesh, 20% of farms tested positive for TiLV in tilapia, while co-cultivated fish species and invertebrates did not show signs of TiLV infection. Experimental infection only showed clinical signs in Nile tilapia, suggesting that species in polycultures may not be susceptible to TiLV.

Impacts of oxygen and ozone nanobubbles on bacteriophage in aquaculture system

Le Thanh Dien, Nguyen Vu Linh, Thao Thu Mai, Saengchan Senapin, Sophie St-Hilaire, Channarong Rodkhum, Ha Thanh Dong

Summary: Injection of ozone nanobubbles into water reduces bacterial load, improves dissolved oxygen, and modulates the fish innate immune system. This study investigates the effect of oxygen and ozone nanobubbles on a specific phage and finds that ozone nanobubbles can eradicate the phage while improving its adherence to fish body surfaces and penetration into internal organs. The use of ozone nanobubbles shows potential in reducing viral load in aquaculture.

Immunoproteomic identification of OmpA with potential stimulation of serum-specific antibody in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and its ability to protect against Edwardsiella ictaluri infection

Todsaporn Bunpote, Pakkakul Sangsuriya, Saengchan Senapin, Prapansak Srisapoome, Pongsak Khunrae, Sasimanas Unajak, Ha Thanh Dong, Triwit Rattanarojpong

Summary: The study identified OmpA through immunoproteomic methods as a potential candidate for developing a recombinant vaccine against E. ictaluri infection in Nile tilapia. Immunization with recombinant OmpA protein induced specific antibody production and exhibited bacterial agglutination properties in fish serum. Partial protection was observed in Nile tilapia immunized with OmpA vaccine.

Antibacterial activity and immunomodulatory role of a proline-rich antimicrobial peptide SpPR-AMP1 against Vibrio campbellii infection in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei

Thitiya Rattanadilog Na Phuket, Walaiporn Charoensapsri, Piti Amparyup, Chanprapa Imjongjirak

Summary: The crab proline-rich AMP SpPR-AMP1 has potent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This study demonstrates that SpPR-AMP1 has therapeutic effects against AHPND infection caused by Vibrio campbellii VH-639 and can enhance the innate immune response in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. SpPR-AMP1 disrupts the bacterial cell membrane and promotes shrimp's resistance against V. campbellii VH-639 infection.

Streptococcus suis is a lethal pathogen in snakeskin gourami, Trichopodus pectoralis

Nguyen Dinh-Hung, Ha Thanh Dong, Suwimon Taengphu, Chayanit Soontara, Channarong Rodkhum, Saengchan Senapin, Satid Chatchaiphan

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine the causative agent of an outbreak with clinical signs similar to those of piscine streptococcosis in farmed snakeskin gourami (Trichopodus pectoralis). The bacterium isolated from the diseased fish was identified as Streptococcus suis, a new piscine pathogen. Experimental infection confirmed the pathogenicity of S. suis in both juvenile and adult fish, and histopathological changes were observed in multiple organs. Public awareness and biosecurity measures should be considered to prevent the spread of the disease.

Chen, Ruth Zadoks, Andreas Kiermeier, Bing Wang, Esther Garrido Gamarro, Masami Takeuchi, Mohammad Noor Amal Azmai, Belen Fouz, Rolando Pakingking, Zeng Wei Wei, Melba G. Bondad-Reantaso

Summary: Tilapia culture is a significant source of income and nutrition for rural families. However, intensification and global warming have led to bacterial disease outbreaks in tilapia farms, threatening sustainable production. This review provides an overview of common and emerging bacterial pathogens, diseases, diagnostics, and the risks of antimicrobial resistance in tilapia.

Immunological response of 35 and 42 days old Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer, Bloch 1790) fry following immersion immunization with Streptococcus iniae heat-killed vaccine

Nguyen Tien Vinh, Ha Thanh Dong, Nguyen Giang Thu Lan, Pakkakul Sangsuriya, Krishna R. Salin, Satid Chatchaiphan, Saengchan Senapin

Summary: In this study, the immune responses of Asian seabass fry at 35 and 42 days post-hatching to a heat-killed Streptococcus iniae vaccine were investigated. It was found that fish at both stages could produce specific antibodies against the pathogen, with the 42-day fry showing a faster response. These findings suggest that early vaccination of Asian seabass fry between 35 and 42 days post-hatching is feasible.

Synthetic peptides derived from predicted B cell epitopes of nervous necrosis virus (NNV) show antigenicity and elicit immunogenic responses in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer)

Sumit Vinod Jungi, Vimbai Irene Machimbirike, Nguyen Vu Linh, Pakkakul Sangsuriya, Krishna R. Salin, Saengchan Senapin, Ha Thanh Dong

Summary: This study explores the application of synthetic peptides as potential vaccine candidates for the prevention of NNV in Asian seabass. Three predicted immunogenic B cell epitopes were selected and synthesized, and the interaction between these peptides and Asian seabass's MHC class II was confirmed. The peptides exhibited both antigenic and immunogenic properties, suggesting their potential as vaccine candidates for preventing NNV infection in fish.
