Teleost egg envelope generally consists of a thin outer layer and a thick inner layer. The inner layer of the Pacific herring egg envelope is further divided into distinct inner layers I and II. In our previous study, we cloned four zona pellucida (ZP) proteins (HgZPBa, HgZPBb, HgZPCa, and HgZPCb) from Pacific herring, two of which (HgZPBa and HgZPCa) were synthesized in the liver and two (HgZPBb and HgZPCb) in the ovary. In this study, we raised antibodies against these four proteins to identify their locations using immunohistochemistry. Our results suggest that inner layer I is constructed primarily of HgZPBa and Ca, whereas inner layer II consists primarily of HgZPBa. HgZPBb and Cb were minor components of the envelope. Therefore, the egg envelope of Pacific herring is primarily composed of liver-synthesized ZP proteins. A comparison of the thickness of the fertilized egg envelopes of 55 species suggested that egg envelopes derived from liver-synthesized ZP proteins tended to be thicker in demersal eggs than those in pelagic eggs, whereas egg envelopes derived from ovarian-synthesized ZP proteins had no such tendency. Our comparison suggests that the prehatching period of an egg with a thick egg envelope is longer than that of an egg with a thin egg envelope. We hypothesized that acquisition of liver-synthesized ZP proteins during evolution conferred the ability to develop a thick egg envelope, which allowed species with demersal eggs to adapt to mechanical stress in the prehatching environment by thickening the egg envelope, while pelagic egg envelopes have remained thin. Summary: This article reports the ability of Bacillus licheniformis strain TAB7 to degrade azoxystrobin through a novel degradation pathway, and identifies azoxystrobin amine as a less toxic metabolite compared to the parent compound. Additionally, the study reveals enzymatic isomerization of (E)-AZ to (Z)-AZ by TAB7.

Summary: This study reports the identification of a novel digestive enzyme called pactacin, belonging to the astacin metalloprotease family, specifically found in teleosts. Through analyzing pactacin enzymes in pot-bellied seahorse and medaka, it was discovered that these enzymes are commonly expressed in the pancreas and converted to active forms in the intestine. The findings suggest a unique digestive enzyme evolution in teleosts, with potential implications for understanding nutrient extraction in vertebrates.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the molecular evolution of ZP genes in Teleostei, revealing a shift in the expression of these genes from the ovary to the liver and gene duplication during the early stages of Teleostei evolution. The repeat sequences in ZP proteins play a crucial role in egg envelope hardening and hatching. These findings shed light on the evolution and function of ZP genes in Teleostei.

Summary: This study compared different types of brood pouches in the Syngnathinae subfamily through histological and immunohistochemical analysis. The results revealed the presence of vascular egg compartments in all examined species during the brooding period. Furthermore, the placenta structure differed between open and closed pouches. The study also provided insights into the morphological evolutionary pathway of the brood pouch in Syngnathinae, laying the foundation for future molecular-level evolutionary studies.

Summary: The seahorse is a unique teleost fish with special morphology, including bony plates and spines, and males possessing a brooding organ called the brood pouch. The flame cone cells, found in the brood pouch and spines, express a gene called pgrich which is not present in related species. This pgrich gene may have originated from the elastin gene with the involvement of transposable elements and obtained its novel function in the flame cone cells during seahorse evolution.

Molecular evolution of patristacin genes in teleosts based on the genome survey

Yuko Nakano, Tatsuki Nagasawa, Yohei Okazawa, Naoya Mashiko, Shigeki Yasumasu, Mari Kawaguchi

Summary: During the evolution, gene duplication occurred in the astacin metalloprotease family genes, especially in the teleost lineage. One of the duplicated genes, patristacin, is present in the brood pouch and found on the same chromosome as other c6ast genes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the patristacin gene homologs were found in only several lineages, with the highest occurrence in the Percomorpha group of teleosts. Within the Atherinomorphae group, platyfish possess eight patristacin gene homologs, with only XmPastn2 showing strong expression in various organs, particularly in mucus-secreting cells found in the epidermis around the jaw.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by skeletal muscle cells, known as SkM-EVs, have specific protein and miRNA profiles and mainly accumulate in the muscle interstitium. However, their contribution to plasma EVs is subtle, suggesting that SkM-EVs mainly play a role within the muscle microenvironment.
