Physicochemical characteristics of wastewater have a relationship with the stability of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). This in turn has an effect on the toxicity of TiO2 NPs in microorganisms. In this work, the effect of TiO2 NPs on activated sludge process was evaluated using three different types of wastewater: synthetic, raw, and filtered. The results showed that aggregate size of TiO2 NPs and their specific adsorption of substrates were influenced by the type of substrates and the presence of suspended solids in the wastewater. It was also shown that TiO2 NPs in raw wastewater severely inhibited oxygen uptake by microorganisms as compared to uptake in synthetic or filtered wastewater. The attachment of TiO2 NP aggregates on cell membranes was observed for all types of wastewater. However, the internalization of TiO2 NPs by microorganisms was observed only for raw and filtered wastewater. These results indicate that the effects caused by TiO2 NPs on activated sludge were different depending on the wastewater used for the experiment. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Incidence of metal-based nanoparticles in the conventional wastewater treatment process

Pabel Cervantes-Aviles, Arturo A. Keller

Summary: Metal-based nanoparticles were detected in wastewater streams, with concentrations varying throughout different stages of the wastewater treatment process. The study showed that the activated sludge process and reclaimed water system effectively removed most nanoparticles, but high concentrations were still present in anaerobic digesters, emphasizing the need to consider nanoparticle release risk in sludge disposal.

Approaches applied to detect SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and perspectives post-COVID-19

Pabel Cervantes-Aviles, Ivan Moreno-Andrade, Julian Carrillo-Reyes

Summary: The detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is mainly done through viral concentration methods followed by RT-qPCR testing, which shows varying virus recovery rates. It is recommended to use RT-qPCR or RT-ddPCR targeting specific genes to calculate the limit of detection in wastewater samples for more accurate results. Rigorous methodology is needed to identify positive cases in a region based on genomic copies in wastewater.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology is an effective and cost-effective method for monitoring the spread of SARS-CoV-2, providing early warning of outbreaks in the population. The study found a correlation between viral load in wastewater and clinical cases, with wastewater surveillance able to provide a 2-7 day early warning. The detection rate of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater was relatively low, with one detection for every 14,300 reported new cases. Prevalence estimates during the study period ranged from 0.02% to 4.6%. The application of wastewater-based epidemiology for COVID-19 surveillance is generally consistent and feasible, with room for improvement.

Approaches on Ferrofluid Synthesis and Applications: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Oscar Oehlsen, Sussy Cervantes-Ramirez, Pabel Cervantes-Aviles, Illya A. Medina-Velo

Summary: Ferrofluids are colloidal suspensions of iron oxide nanoparticles within liquids that have strong magnetic properties. This review discusses the synthesis methods of nanoparticles, surfactants, and carrier liquids for ferrofluid production, as well as the applications of ferrofluids in medicine, water treatment, and mechanical engineering. Coprecipitation and thermal decomposition are the main methods used for synthesizing iron oxide nanoparticles. The selection of surfactants and carrier liquids depends on the desired stability and compatibility of the ferrofluid. Ferrofluids have a wide range of applications, including biosensing, medical imaging, water treatment, energy harvesting, and vibration control.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nitrogen removal by hybrid hydrogels containing a consortium of microalgae-nitrifying bacteria, in the presence of activated carbon as an adsorbent. The results showed that hydrogels can carry out the nitrification process without the need for activated carbon to remove potential inhibitors. The best performance was observed for the hydrogel with 5% of biomass without activated carbon, with a nitrification rate of 0.43 mg N/gTSS·h.

Adsorption on activated carbon combined with ozonation for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern in drinking water

Beatrice Cantoni, Jessica Ianes, Beatrice Bertolo, Selena Ziccardi, Francesco Maffini, Manuela Antonelli

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of ozonation and adsorption as in-series processes compared to standalone processes for the removal of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in drinking water. The combination of both processes proves to be more effective than adsorption and ozonation alone. Ozonation improves the adsorption performance of poorly-oxidizable CECs but worsens that of well-oxidizable compounds. This research highlights the importance of considering both processes in the removal of CECs in drinking water treatment plants.

Summary: The exacerbation of global warming, extreme weather events, and rapid urbanization have led to increased flooding in urban areas. China has adopted sponge city as an efficient means of preventing and controlling urban floods. Using a SWMM-FVCOM model, the hydrological reduction and control effect of sponge city construction (SPCC) within a university campus were evaluated. The study found that implementing SPCC effectively mitigates surface runoff and reduces the severity of urban flooding. However, the efficacy of runoff control decreases with longer rainfall return periods.
