Summary: Validation study of an ACLR checklist demonstrated that patients who successfully passed the checklist before returning to play experienced a significantly lower incidence of ipsilateral anterior cruciate ligament injury compared with patients who did not pass the checklist.

Summary: Competitive athletes demonstrate better strength compared to recreational athletes after ACL reconstruction, but all athletes show functional deficits. The study confirms that demographics, physical function, and psychological factors are related to returning to preinjury level sports after surgery, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive assessments for safe return to play.

Summary: This study examined neurocognition, postural control, and symptomology at multiple timepoints following concussion and found no significant decline in these areas approximately eight months post-injury. It is important for clinicians to continue monitoring outcomes longitudinally in concussion management and potential long-term implications.

Summary: Returning to physical activity is a concern for adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis after spinal fusion surgery. Previous studies have shown a decrease in flexibility post-surgery and the impact of fusion levels on returning to the same level of play. The safety of returning to activities is generally agreed upon, with rare complications reported. This review explores the function of fusion levels, factors influencing recovery, and safety considerations for returning to play post-spine surgery.

Summary: Systematic review of literature on MPFL reconstruction found a high overall rate of return to play, but a significant number of patients did not return to their preoperative level of sport. The average time taken to return to play was approximately 7 months.

Summary: Overall, the return to play rate was high following both patellar tendon (PT) and quadriceps tendon (QT) repairs. A large percentage of patients were able to return to their pre-operative level of sport with a low risk for re-rupture. Professional athletes also showed high rates of return to play after PT and QT repair.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate a diagnostic test battery based on a Delphi consensus for making return-to-play decisions after acute shoulder injury. Data will be collected at two time points: when the patient is cleared for return to training and 12 months after return. The results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and scientific conferences.

Summary: This study found that patients who did not return to play after MPFL reconstruction mainly lacked psychological readiness, with the most common reason being fear of re-injury.

Summary: This article systematically reviews the return to play rate and criteria after surgical treatment for AC joint dislocation. The study found a high rate of return to sport after surgery, with most patients able to return to their preinjury level. However, there is a lack of consensus on safe return to play criteria, highlighting the need for further research.

Summary: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are important in medical decision making, but patients may strategically report symptoms to influence treatment decisions. This study proposes the Behavior-Aware Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (BA-POMDP) and the Behavior-Learning Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (BL-POMDP) to optimize treatment cessation decisions while considering known symptom-reporting behaviors. The BL-POMDP reduces the premature RTP rate by over 44% and provides additional health-adjusted athletic exposures compared to current practice.

Summary: This study investigated the differential cost of post-COVID-19 return to play protocols for competitive collegiate athletes. The findings revealed that a tiered-based approach was more economical, and a universal exercise echocardiogram group detected slightly more myocardial abnormalities.

Summary: In the past 5 years, cardiac society guidelines have started to recognize shared decision making for athletes with genetic heart diseases predisposing sudden cardiac death, such as LQTS, challenging the traditional disqualification approach. This study examined the prevalence and outcomes of athletes with genetic heart diseases after returning to play, especially those with LQTS, providing evidence supporting contemporary shared decision making.

Summary: There is considerable debate on whether athletes with asymptomatic cervical canal stenosis can return to active play, with no definitive guidelines currently in place. This article identifies radiographical and MRI-based criteria to distinguish athletes at-risk from those safe to return to play, emphasizing the importance of counseling for patients with previous cervical cord injuries. Improved MRI criteria are believed to be useful for further studies in the elite athlete population.

Summary: This study investigated the use of shoulder ultrasound as a method of predicting the likelihood of returning to competition in agility dogs with shoulder teno-muscular injuries after a standardized rehabilitation protocol. The results showed that ultrasound examination is a reliable method for monitoring the progression of shoulder tendon healing, and it is more effective than clinical evaluation in identifying shoulder lesions.

Summary: This study examines the factors associated with concussion management behavior in adult Ladies Gaelic Football players. The findings suggest that being diagnosed with a concussion greatly influences the subacute management behavior. It is recommended to improve access to medical personnel and introduce comprehensive concussion education to ensure proper medical care for players.
