Summary: Cachexia is a multifactorial inflammatory syndrome prevalent in cancer patients, leading to drastic weight loss, particularly in skeletal muscle and fat depletion. Early dynamic intervention is believed to help maintain or slow the loss of physical function.

Summary: This study found that 12 weeks of treadmill training in old male mice improved endothelial function, physical performance, and overall body composition, but had limited impact on skeletal muscle remodeling at baseline or in response to recovery following disuse atrophy.

Summary: High dietary energy and protein supply in livestock nutrition can lead to obesity, insulin insensitivity, and low-grade inflammation. The study found that ceramides play a role in disrupting insulin signaling in the liver and reducing the abundance of functional insulin receptors in adipose tissue. This research provides insights into the mechanisms of diet-induced metabolic inflammation.

Summary: This review discusses three major concepts regarding sphingolipids and diabetes: the potential involvement of GM3 in insulin-insulin receptor interactions, the potential roles of Cer and LacCer in apoptosis and mitochondrial dysfunction, and the larger role of LacCer in antioxidant status and inflammation. In addition, the review discusses the efficacy of glycosphingolipid synthesis inhibitors in ameliorating diabetes in experimental animal models.

Summary: The study found that radiation therapy before or during ADT does not interfere with the beneficial effects of exercise training on body composition in men with prostate cancer. The usual care group experienced a decrease in lean mass and an increase in fat percentage, while muscle area and density remained unchanged in both groups.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of Magnesium lithospermate B (MLB) in combating muscle atrophy in mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. The results showed that MLB supplementation alleviated metabolic abnormalities and prevented muscle loss caused by obesity, likely through inhibiting muscle degradation pathways. This study also revealed changes in inflammatory markers and signaling pathways associated with muscle atrophy.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the immunoinflammatory responses of strength training with blood flow restriction (ST-BFR) to multiple-set training at different intensities. The results showed that strength training, regardless of the method used, could modulate leukocyte count, with neutrophils and TCD4+ lymphocytes being the main factors responsible for this variation. Compared to multiple-set training, ST-BFR produced similar immunoinflammatory responses to low-intensity training.

Summary: In this study, it was found that downregulation of GBA1 promoted liver cancer metastasis by activating the Wnt/beta-catenin signalling pathway. Additionally, the interaction between GlcCer and a protein was discovered, and GlcCer d18:1/18:0 was identified as a potential functional lipid that promotes liver cancer metastasis. Therefore, upregulation of GBA1 expression may be a potential therapeutic strategy for liver cancer metastasis.

Summary: Coumestrol significantly reduces the accumulation of sphingolipids in insulin-resistant hepatocytes and promotes the expression of fatty acid transport proteins, improving hepatic insulin resistance. Additionally, Coumestrol alters the sphingolipid salvage pathway, leading to excessive sphingolipid deposition.

Summary: Appetite is essential for normal metabolism, and inflammation can impact both homeostatic and non-homeostatic systems of appetite, with the physiological functions still largely unknown. This review focuses on the structures of these systems and discusses how TLR4-induced inflammatory signaling contributes to regulating appetite in both systems, providing potential for new therapeutic interventions.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to distinct disease patterns with significant changes in host regulatory responses. Severe cases suffer from lung inflammation and systemic effects, while critically ill patients experience a lipid storm that affects inflammation and tissue damage. Sphingolipids play critical roles in various cellular processes and may serve as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for COVID-19.
