After the sustained consumption of virgin olive oil (VOO), the unabsorbed native phenols (mainly hydroxytyrosol (HT)) are transformed into its catabolites in the intestine by microbials. The role of these catabolites in preventing colon cancer has not been. sufficiently investigated. This work aims to study the antiproliferative and apoptotic activities in colon (Caco-2; HT-29) cancer cell lines of the main catabolites detected in human feces (phenylacetic, phenylpropionic, hydroxyphenylpropionic, and dihydroxyphenylpropionic acids and catechol), after the sustained VOO intake. Additionally, an assessment of the ability of these colonic cells to metabolize the studied compounds was performed. The results showed that Err and phenylacetic and hydroxyphenylpropionic acids produce cell cycle arrest and promote apoptosis. HT-29 cells were more sensitive to phenol treatments than Caco-2. In synthesis, the results of the present study represent a good starting point for understanding the potential apoptotic and antiproliferative effects of VOO phenolic compounds, and their colonic metabolites.

Chemopreventive effects of anthocyanins on colorectal and breast cancer: A review

David Bars-Cortina, Ali Sakhawat, Carme Pinol-Felis, Maria-Jose Motilva

Summary: This review summarizes the current state of diet anthocyanin research in breast cancer and colorectal cancer animal models as well as human studies. Animal studies suggest a chemoprevention effect of anthocyanin, but results from human studies are contradictory. Low doses of anthocyanins used in recent human studies call for more toxicological data to support relevant results.

Nutri-Epigenetic Effects of Phenolic Compounds from Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A Systematic Review

Andrea del Saz-Lara, Maria-Carmen Lopez de las Hazas, Francesco Visioli, Alberto Davalos

Summary: This article systematically reviews the effects of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and its phenolic compounds on the epigenetic landscape. The results show that EVOO and its phenolic compounds can induce epigenetic changes that regulate gene expression and molecular targets involved in various metabolic processes. Oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, for example, have been shown to have epigenetic effects in cancer and other diseases. Understanding the epigenetic effects of EVOO and its phenolic compounds can contribute to the development of pharma-nutritional strategies.

A comparative evaluation of the phenol and lycopene content of tomato by-products subjected to different drying methods

Bianca Souza da Costa, Marta Olivan Garcia, German Soldevilla Muro, Maria-Jose Motilva

Summary: This study focused on dehydrating industrial tomato pomace using innovative techniques (microwave and spiral flash dryer) and conventional techniques (freeze-drying and hot air-drying) to produce ingredients rich in bioactive compounds. The effect of different drying methods on the bioactive composition of the tomato by-products was analyzed. Microwave dehydration improved the retention of flavanone-like compounds and lycopene, while spiral flash drying resulted in higher concentrations of flavonols and phenolic acids. These findings suggest that drying processes using microwave and spiral flash could be promising for producing high added-value ingredients from tomato by-products.

Microbiota dysbiosis caused by dietetic patterns as a promoter of Alzheimer's disease through metabolic syndrome mechanisms

Victor Navalon-Monllor, Laura Soriano-Romani, Mariana Silva, Maria-Carmen Lopez de las Hazas, Natalia Hernando-Quintana, Teodoro Suarez Dieguez, Pere Morell Esteve, Juan Antonio Nieto

Summary: Microbiota dysbiosis and metabolic syndrome due to non-adequate diet lead to a feedback pathogenic state that contributes to the development of Alzheimer's disease. The dysbiosis status results in lower production of SCFAs, which disrupts lipid homeostasis and causes adipose tissue dysfunction. This leads to increased lipid storage, high cholesterol levels, and reduced satiety sensation and energy expenditure, resulting in weight gain and dyslipidemia. Additionally, dysbiosis and low SCFA generation lead to increased intestinal permeability, chronic inflammation, and insulin resistance, creating an environment conducive to the formation and progression of Alzheimer's disease through the impact on secretase enzymes and tau hyperphosphorylation.

Alba Macia, Maria-Paz Romero, Anna Pedret, Rosa Sola, Michael N. Clifford, Laura Rubio-Pique

Summary: This study aimed to assess the inter-individual variation in phloretin absorption and metabolism and to seek possible phloretin metabotypes following apple snack consumption. The results showed that there is extensive inter-individual variability in the excretion of phloretin phase-II conjugates, which could be related to factors such as oral microbiota activity and lactase non-persistence trait. The study also found inconsistent effects on post-prandial serum glucose concentrations, with a tendency for decreases to be associated with higher excretion of phloretin phase-II conjugates.
