Background: Diabetes and depression are reciprocally linked, but few studies modeled their interplay considering the influence of affective temperaments (AT) and demographic factors. Methods: Participants with type 1 and type 2 diabetes (T1DM and T2DM, n = 279) recruited from Diabetes Units were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-autoquestionnaire version (TEMPS-A), Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS), Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS) and Cumulative Illness Rating Scales (CIRS). Glycosylated hemoglobin levels (HBA1C) was used as index of glycemic control. The bi-directional association between glycemic control, depression and candidate mediators was examined with Structural Equation Modeling, testing the impact of moderator variables (AT, diabetes type, age and gender) with multigroup comparison. Results: The association between HBA1C and depressive symptoms was mediated by diabetes-related distress,, while there was no definite evidence of depression influencing HBA1C through changes of adherence, tiredness, appetite, alcohol intake or smoking. Among individuals with AT, distress was unrelated to HBA1C and had a higher impact on depression; adherence was inversely association with HBA1C. Moreover, physical comorbidities impacted on depression. While diabetes type had a moderation role, age and gender did not affect the model. Limitations: Cross sectional design, lack of objective measures of diet and physical activity. Conclusions: Glycemic control seem to influence the severity of depressive symptoms, but the reciprocal association seems non-significant. AT and diabetes type may shape this relationship influencing distress and adherence to medications. Findings may aid interventions aimed at improving patients' care and quality of life.

Summary: Late-life depression presents with diverse and heterogeneous clinical features, which were identified in this study as eight symptom complexes through network psychopathology. The study found reciprocal interactions between different symptom complexes, providing potential targets for personalized treatment and biomarker research in late-life depression.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and its containment measures have led to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in the general population. This study explores the relationship between social isolation, the use of digital resources, and the development of problematic internet use. The findings indicate higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms among participants compared to the larger study population, as well as an increase in problematic internet use and excessive gaming over time. The study also highlights the role of COVID-19-related psychopathology, stress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation in the emergence of digital addictions, with professional gamers and younger individuals being particularly vulnerable.

The screen for cognitive impairment in psychiatry in patients with borderline personality disorder

Federica Folesani, Martino Belvederi Murri, Bruno Biancosino, Silvia Costa, Luigi Zerbinati, Rosangela Caruso, Maria Giulia Nanni, Tommaso Toffanin, Maria Ferrara, Scot E. Purdon, Luigi Grassi

Summary: Cognitive deficits are common in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and can impact psychopathology, functioning, and outcome. The availability of a cognitive screening instrument could be beneficial in clinical settings to evaluate neurocognition in BPD patients. This study validated the use of the Screen for Cognitive Impairment for Psychiatry (SCIP) in a sample of 58 BPD patients and found that it displayed adequate psychometric properties. The SCIP could be integrated into routine clinical assessments to provide a preliminary evaluation of cognitive features in BPD.

Summary: This study used network analyses to examine the associations between symptoms of COPD, depression, and anxiety. The results showed that chest-tightness was related to acute anxiety, while cough and weakness were connected with core depressive symptoms. Chronic anxiety was linked with acute anxiety and depressive symptoms. Findings were confirmed after accounting for confounding factors.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the treated incidence of first-episode psychosis (FEP) individuals in the Emilia-Romagna public mental healthcare system in Italy. The study also examined the variability of incidence and user characteristics across different centers and years. The results showed a relatively high and variable incidence of FEP across areas, but no significant changes over time. The study also found associations between user characteristics, study center, and year, providing valuable insights into the social and healthcare factors influencing FEP.

First-episode psychosis and autism spectrum disorder: a scoping review and a guide to overcome diagnostic challenges

Maria Ferrara, Eleonora M. A. Curtarello, Gabriele Simonelli, Laura A. Yoviene Sykes, Laura Fusar-Poli, Federica Folesani, Martino Belvederi Murri, Eugenio Aguglia, Pierluigi Politi, Luigi Grassi

Summary: This article aims to summarize the literature on ASD and FEP, discuss the differential diagnosis between the two conditions, and examine the impact of comorbidity on recovery. The review found that ASD or autistic traits were highly prevalent in individuals with FEP, with negative effects on pathways to care, clinical presentation, and outcomes. The article highlights the importance of an adequate differential diagnosis and the need for FEP services to be equipped for assessing and diagnosing ASD symptoms, which can be particularly challenging in adult patients.
