Summary: This study investigated the association between acute phase antidepressant medication treatment and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that acute phase treatment was significantly associated with achieving glycemic control within 36 months, but not beyond 36 months. There was no association between acute vs. less than acute phase treatment and glycemic control.

Summary: This study found that individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) have lower conscientiousness, while self-compassion and distress tolerance may serve as protective factors against BPD and major depressive disorder (MDD). This finding was consistent across two studies. However, only self-compassion predicted decreases in BPD features and MDD symptoms in a regression analysis.

Summary: This study investigates the adverse effects of diabetes distress and depressive symptoms on self-care behaviors and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results suggest that self-efficacy plays a mediating role in these associations, with higher levels of self-efficacy mitigating the negative effects. Additionally, the interaction between diabetes distress and depressive symptoms affects diabetes outcomes through self-efficacy.

Summary: Affective temperament was evaluated in obese individuals with T2DM and pre-diabetes, showing that depressive, cyclothymic, and anxious temperaments were positively correlated with glycemic control, while hyperthymic temperament showed a negative correlation. This suggests that affective temperaments may influence glycemic control in obese individuals with carbohydrate disorders.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and its containment measures have led to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in the general population. This study explores the relationship between social isolation, the use of digital resources, and the development of problematic internet use. The findings indicate higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms among participants compared to the larger study population, as well as an increase in problematic internet use and excessive gaming over time. The study also highlights the role of COVID-19-related psychopathology, stress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation in the emergence of digital addictions, with professional gamers and younger individuals being particularly vulnerable.

Summary: Cognitive deficits are common in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and can impact psychopathology, functioning, and outcome. The availability of a cognitive screening instrument could be beneficial in clinical settings to evaluate neurocognition in BPD patients. This study validated the use of the Screen for Cognitive Impairment for Psychiatry (SCIP) in a sample of 58 BPD patients and found that it displayed adequate psychometric properties. The SCIP could be integrated into routine clinical assessments to provide a preliminary evaluation of cognitive features in BPD.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the treated incidence of first-episode psychosis (FEP) individuals in the Emilia-Romagna public mental healthcare system in Italy. The study also examined the variability of incidence and user characteristics across different centers and years. The results showed a relatively high and variable incidence of FEP across areas, but no significant changes over time. The study also found associations between user characteristics, study center, and year, providing valuable insights into the social and healthcare factors influencing FEP.

Summary: Precision psychiatry is a paradigm shift in clinical care and mental health service organization that emphasizes personalization and integration of multimodal data science. It aims to identify patient subgroups more prone to certain phenotypes and guide treatment selection. Pharmacogenomics and computational psychiatry are important tools in precision psychiatry, which have been increasingly integrated into clinical settings.

Summary: This article aims to summarize the literature on ASD and FEP, discuss the differential diagnosis between the two conditions, and examine the impact of comorbidity on recovery. The review found that ASD or autistic traits were highly prevalent in individuals with FEP, with negative effects on pathways to care, clinical presentation, and outcomes. The article highlights the importance of an adequate differential diagnosis and the need for FEP services to be equipped for assessing and diagnosing ASD symptoms, which can be particularly challenging in adult patients.
