Summary: This study found that the effect of oleanolic acid (OA) on cholestatic liver injury is closely related to the simultaneous activation of NRF2 and FXR dual signaling pathways, in which the NRF2 signaling pathway plays a more important role. The dual signaling pathways cooperatively regulate bile acid metabolic homeostasis through the interaction mechanism with β-catenin/P300.

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and its development is linked to oxidative stress. The transcription factor Nrf2 plays a vital role in protecting cells against oxidative stress in cancer growth, progression, and therapy resistance. Therefore, innovative inhibitors targeting Nrf2 are being investigated. This comprehensive review explores the potential of phenolic compounds, found in traditional plant-based remedies, as effective anticancer agents by inhibiting Nrf2. The clinical applications of naturally-occurring bioactive compounds as Nrf2 inhibitors, specifically polyphenols, are also discussed.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the accumulation of hepatic fat. This study investigated the plasma levels of oxylipins, free polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and markers of lipid peroxidation in NAFLD patients. The results showed that severe NAFLD patients had higher levels of oxylipins, saturated oxylipins, and free PUFA, suggesting an association between inflammation, fatty acid oxidation dysregulation, and NAFLD progression.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by liver fat deposition without alcohol consumption. This study aimed to assess the antioxidant and pro-inflammatory state in NAFLD patients following a 12-month lifestyle intervention based on adherence to a Mediterranean diet (AMD). The intervention resulted in improvements in anthropometric and biochemical parameters, with higher reductions in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and C reactive protein (CRP) observed in participants with high AMD. Additionally, there were decreases in prooxidant and proinflammatory markers, as well as improvements in physical fitness and intrahepatic fat contents. These improvements were more significant in individuals with higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet.

Summary: It has been found that cancer stem cells exhibit altered metabolism compared to non-CSCs, which plays a crucial role in tumor initiation, progression, immunosuppression, and resistance to conventional therapy. Two natural flavonoids, apigenin and isovitexin, have been shown to enhance the efficacy of conventional chemotherapeutic drugs by sensitizing CSCs. This study aims to critically evaluate the potential of apigenin and isovitexin in targeting CSCs in different cancers as novel therapeutic agents.
