Summary: This study examines the relationship between the age of acquisition of Polish Sign Language (PJM) and the receptive language skills of deaf individuals. The results show that early exposure to PJM promotes sensitivity to phonological, morphological, and syntactic patterns in language.

Summary: This study examined the critical thinking skills of undergraduate students in a psychology course and explored the impact of language ability on their performance in different tests. The findings showed that international students were able to improve their performance in subject-specific tests after a year of course, but still had challenges in general critical thinking tests.

Summary: Latinas in the United States have higher mortality from breast cancer, but longitudinal studies of mammography ordering in primary care are lacking. This study analyzed mammography order rates in Latinas and non-Latina white women over a 10-year period and found that English-preferring Latinas had lower mammogram order rates, while Spanish-preferring Latinas had higher odds of ever having a mammogram ordered and a higher rate of annual mammogram orders.

Summary: Early-life antibiotic exposure, particularly to vancomycin, disrupts the development of the enteric nervous system (ENS), leading to an increased risk of complications in neonates. This disruption is associated with an expansion of pro-inflammatory colonic macrophages and altered macrophage phenotypes.

Summary: In this study, the influence of parental and infant bilingualism on infants' speech perception skills was investigated, and it was found that bilingualism did not affect the developmental trajectory of infants' native and non-native speech perception. However, vowel exaggeration in IDS was significantly related to speech perception skills for older infants.

Summary: This study aimed to document the rates and correlates of return to work, work productivity, and activity impairment among Chinese cancer survivors in Hong Kong at one year post-treatment. The results showed that physically demanding jobs and poorer physical functioning delayed return to work, and unmanaged physical symptom and psychological distress hindered work productivity.

Summary: This study utilized a custom software algorithm to analyze a large dataset of over 4 million patient records, identifying that rapid progression of carotid stenosis is rare, with only 3.6% of patients experiencing it. Factors such as younger age, white race, lower body mass index, peripheral arterial disease diagnosis, and transient ischemic attack diagnosis were found to be associated with rapid progression.

Summary: This paper analyzes the connectedness and spillover transmission mechanism in the U.S. Treasury yields with different maturities. It finds that the 5-year Treasury yields play a significant role as an information transmitter to other yields, even under unconventional monetary policies. This role is also evident in the Treasury market flash event and in Treasury futures and ETFs.

Summary: This study examined the psychological well-being of the general population in China during the critical transition period from strict COVID-19 control measures to relaxed policies. The findings showed that individuals infected with COVID-19, particularly the Omicron variant BA.5.2 or BF.7, reported lower levels of positive emotions compared to uninfected individuals or those who had recovered. COVID-19 related thoughts were found to mediate the relationship between negative emotions and life satisfaction.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the interaction between the viral replication/transcription/segregation factor E2 and the tumor suppressor p53 is critical for the HPV16 life cycle. HPV16 immortalized cells retain significant expression of p53, and the critical role for the E2-p53 interaction demonstrates why this is the case. If the E2-p53 interaction is disrupted then HPV16 immortalized cells fail to proliferate, have enhanced DNA damage and senescence, and there is premature differentiation during the viral life cycle. Results suggest that targeting the E2-p53 interaction would have therapeutic benefits, potentially attenuating the spread of HPV16.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in the occurrence of hyperthyroidism and the use of antithyroid drugs (ATDs) in Danish pregnant women before and after the implementation of iodine fortification (IF). The results showed that after IF, the proportion of pregnant women using ATDs increased and then leveled out at the end of the follow-up period, indicating the influence of IF on the occurrence of autoimmune hyperthyroidism in younger individuals.

Summary: This article applies cultural translation and geohistorical frameworks to analyze the interplay between linguistic, cultural, physical, and ideological proximities and distances in immigrant advocacy and outreach efforts. Data are taken from 'small stories' shared by directors of immigrant-serving organizations in a small metropolitan area in the USA during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings trace how local, state, and national policies were taken up by individual participants and the communities they serve and bring to light the value of applied linguistics research in amplifying the complexities of language access in times of crisis as well as community resilience that are often hiding in plain sight.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the hospitality sector, particularly rural accommodations, and examines the influence of CSR strategies on the resilience of rural hotels. The findings demonstrate a significant positive impact of CSR strategies on resilience levels, with resilience also affecting hotel performance. Moderation effects indicate that the relationship is stronger for hotels with an official sustainability certificate.

Summary: Developmental vowel dyslexia is a type of dyslexia that selectively affects the reading aloud of vowel letters, with deficits located in vowel processing in the sublexical route rather than in the phonological-output stage or the orthographic-visual-analyzer. This type of dyslexia highlights the importance of detailed error analysis and dyslexia-relevant stimuli in detecting dyslexia in transparent language systems.

Summary: This study presents the first in-depth analysis of a specific type of dysnumeria in sign language, focusing on a participant named Nomi. It was found that Nomi mainly made decimal, number-structure errors when reading multidigit numbers. Despite intact early numeric-visual abilities, her deficit appeared to be in a component shared by reading and comprehension of numbers.

Summary: This paper discusses the acquisition of various syntactic structures in Hebrew, proposing a Growing Trees approach based on the cartographic analysis of the clause. The stages of acquisition follow the geometry of the syntactic tree, with early stages corresponding to small portions of the adult tree. Three stages are proposed, each connected to the development of functional layers of the syntactic tree.

Summary: This study found for the first time that thiamine deficiency in infancy can result in language disorders that persist into adulthood. Thiamine is crucial for language development during the critical period for first language acquisition in the first years of life, and deficiency during this period may cause long-lasting impairments in syntax, morphology, reading, phonological working memory, and lexical abilities.

Summary: Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) exhibit difficulties in producing wh-questions, which may be pragmatic or syntactic in nature. Pragmatic errors were common in the ASD groups, while syntactic errors were influenced by language structure. Despite differences in country and language, ASD groups showed similar correct production rates and error types.
