The present work deals with the modelling and simulation of a biogas Demo-processor for green hydrogen production via Autothermal reforming (ATR) process aimed at covering a wide span of potential applications, from fuel cells feed up to the production of pure hydrogen. The biogas ATR unit is composed of a structured catalyst support close coupled to a wall-flow filter that retain soot particles that can be formed during the ATR reaction. Modelling and simulation (CFD and FEM) were carried out to select the innovative catalyst support with promising results for the fuel processor. 3D digital sample reconstruction was performed for the selection of the appropriate porous structures commercially available for the soot filtration and furthermore, 2D CFD analysis was also used to examine flow uniformity issues due to soot trap integration downstream to the ATR. Moreover, the inherent flexibility of the model performed allowed its application in the assessment of the Demonstration plant operating in real conditions. Besides, Aspen simulation has demonstrated that the ATR process is the most promising process to hydrogen production compared to other types of reforming process. Evidencing Pt-Au alloyed domains on supported bimetallic nanoparticles using CO desorption kinetics

Taha Elgayyar, Ranin Atwi, Alain Tuel, Laurence Burel, Yves Schuurman, Frederic C. Meunier

Summary: In this study, we explored the possibility of using CO desorption kinetics monitored by IR spectroscopy as a tool to characterize the mixing of Au and Pt atoms at the surface of supported nanoparticles. The results showed that the bimetallic sample exhibited intermediate behavior between the monometallic Au and Pt samples, indicating the alloyed nature of the nanoparticles. Additionally, the experiments revealed that alumina-supported Au nanoparticles formed surface carbonates at 50°C, possibly through the Boudouard reaction, in contrast to the Pt-based sample.

Influence of Global Operating Parameters on the Reactivity of Soot Particles from Direct Injection Gasoline Engines

S. Koch, F. P. Hagen, L. Buettner, J. Hartmann, A. Velji, H. Kubach, T. Koch, H. Bockhorn, D. Trimis, R. Suntz

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of global operating parameters on the reactivity of soot particles in a turbocharged 4-cylinder GDI engine. The results reveal that engine speed has only a slight effect, while a reduction of air/fuel ratio or an increase of brake mean effective pressure significantly reduces the soot oxidation reactivity. The quality of the fuel/air mixture is identified as a significant parameter influencing soot reactivity.

Cu-Bound Formates are Main Reaction Intermediates during CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Cu/ZrO2

Frederic C. Meunier, Isaac Dansette, Anaelle Paredes-Nunez, Yves Schuurman

Summary: Cu/ZrO2 is a promising catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Three different types of formates were observed under reaction conditions, with one bound to metallic Cu and the other two bound to ZrO2. The Cu-bound formate, representing only about 7% of surface formates, was found to be highly reactive and the sole source of methanol production. This study highlights the importance of quantitative IR analysis and transient methods in understanding the role of surface species.

Effect of nozzle upscaling on coaxial, gas-assisted atomization

Feichi Zhang, Simon Wachter, Thorsten Zirwes, Tobias Jakobs, Nikolaos Zarzalis, Dimosthenis Trimis, Thomas Kolb, Dieter Stapf

Summary: The study investigates the effect of scaling up gas-assisted coaxial atomizers on liquid breakup and spray characteristics. Atomizers with increased sizes were designed and experimentally investigated for different liquid mass flow rates. Results from experiments and simulations show that the breakup morphology remains almost unchanged with the degree of upscaling, but the breakup length increases considerably. This is attributed to the decreased gas flow velocity at the nozzle exit, resulting in decreased momentum exchange between the phases. The obtained results allow for estimating the liquid breakup characteristics when considering the influence of nozzle upscaling.

Heterogenized Molecular Rhodium Phosphine Catalysts within Metal-Organic Frameworks for Alkene Hydroformylation

Partha Samanta, Albert Sole-Daura, Remy Rajapaksha, Florian M. Wisser, Frederic Meunier, Yves Schuurman, Capucine Sassoye, Caroline Mellot-Draznieks, Jerome Canivet

Summary: Molecularly defined organometallic rhodium phosphine complexes were immobilized within a MOF structure without losing their molecular nature and catalytic behavior. These MOF-based catalysts showed high activity for ethylene hydroformylation and successfully catalyzed the hydroformylation of longer and bulkier alkenes. The combination of experimental and computational methods allowed for a better understanding of the active species and molecular mechanisms involved in the catalytic reactions. The use of MOF-808 as a solid ligand offers advantages such as molecular-scale understanding, site isolation, and recycling ability.

On the reality of negatively charged supported gold nanoparticles

Frederic C. Meunier, Xianwei Wang, Thomas Buergi

Summary: The presence of negatively charged gold species on Au surfaces or supported Au nanoparticles has been widely reported based on the appearance of IR bands of adsorbed CO below 2090 cm-1. However, some researchers have suggested that these bands may be solely attributed to the presence of Ni-CO species contaminating the sample surfaces. In this study, CO adsorption was monitored using a CO supply, DRIFTS reaction cell, and lines that excluded nickel contamination. The results show that a band at 2067 cm-1 appeared without the involvement of Ni carbonyls, supporting the idea of CO adsorption on negatively charged Au surfaces. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Electrochemical Approach for Advanced Flow Reactors via Additive Manufacturing of High Surface Area Ti-6Al-4V Anode

Mohammad Reza Bilesan, Meghdad Yazdani, Mathilde Luneau, Gerard Montserrat-Siso, Bjoern Wickman, Eveliina Repo

Summary: In this study, a noble-metal-free 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V electrode is introduced as an alternative anode in alkaline electrochemical processes. The electrode provides a larger projected surface area and facilitates anodic reactions under controlled electrolyte conditions. The 3D scaffold structure enables improved charge transfer and replaces the non-conductive passivation on a flat plate anode with unstable passivation. The results show that the electrochemical active surface area of the 3D Ti-6Al-4V electrode is 42 times higher than a flat plate anode, making it a promising and affordable alternative for alkaline electrochemical applications.

In situ formation of Ni(CO)4 contaminant during IR analyses using a metal-containing reaction cell

Frederic C. Meunier

Summary: Formation of ppm levels of volatile Ni(CO)(4) occurred on a worn commercial cell used for reflectance FT-IR in the presence of 1 kPa CO, but not on a more recent cell. The presence of Ni(CO)(4) resulted in nickel deposition on Au and Cu-based catalysts with specific Ni-CO IR bands. In contrast, no Ni-CO IR bands were observed on plain silica, indicating the requirement of specific sites for Ni(CO)(4) decomposition. The unambiguous evolution of the carbonyl signal on Au/SiO2 can be used to test the presence of ppm levels of Ni(CO)(4) in in situ and operando IR cells.
