Structural characterization of an immunostimulating polysaccharide from the stems of a new medicinal Dendrobium species: Dendrobium Taiseed Tosnobile

Dendrobium Taiseed Tosnobile, a new Dendrobium species developed by crossbreeding Dendrobium tosaense and Dendrobium nobile, exhibits the characteristics of high mass production and high polysaccharide content. This study investigated the structural characterization and immunostimulating effects of a polysaccharide isolated from D. Taiseed Tosnobile (DTTPS). DTTPS was fractioned using a DEAE-650 M column to obtain the major neutral polysaccharide (DTTPS-N). The structural characteristics of DTTPS-N were investigated through high-performance anion exchange chromatography, high-performance size exclusion chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. In the immunostimulating experiment, BALB/c mice were administered DTTPS (100 and 300 mg/kg) daily for 3 weeks. The results revealed that DTTPS-N comprised arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, and xylose at a ratio of 1:1.5:3.0:29.9:1.3. DTTPS-N comprised (1 -> 3; 1 -> 4)-Man as the backbone, and its average molecular weight was 281 kDa. Pharmacological experiments demonstrated that DTTPS substantially increased the population of splenic natural killer (NK) cells, NK cytotoxicity, macrophage phagocytosis, and cytokine induction. This is the first study to demonstrate the structural characteristics and immunopharmacological effects of an active polysaccharide derived from D. Taiseed Tosnobile. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Sources and components of volatile organic compounds in breast surgery operating rooms

Summary: This study investigated the composition and concentration distribution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in surgical smoke from breast surgery during electrocautery. The results showed that the type of tissue, electrosurgical unit, and electrocautery power used affected the VOCs concentrations in surgical smoke. The samples collected from mammary glands using conventional electrosurgical knives had high VOCs concentrations.

The Effect of Polybutylcyanoacrylate Nanoparticles as a Protos Delivery Vehicle on Dental Bone Formation

Further quantitative analysis on new bone formation is needed for validation.

Use of urinary hippuric acid and o-/p-/m-methyl hippuric acid to evaluate surgical smoke exposure in operating room healthcare personnel

Summary: The study utilized liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to analyze hippuric acid and methylhippuric acid in healthcare personnel's urine, finding that the concentrations were higher in administrative staff and surgical nurses, with higher levels of o-/m-/p-MHA in the urine of surgical nurses. Additionally, the type, sex, and age of healthcare personnel were found to be associated with changes in urine composition concentrations. Healthcare personnel should be aware of the exposure risk to surgical smoke.

Development and application of edible coating on dried pineapple exposed to electrical blanching

Summary: A new edible coating based on pectin and honey with blanching pretreatment was developed. The results showed that the combination of pectin and honey coating effectively improved the storage of dried fruit by reducing water activity and total bacterial count. The antioxidant properties of dried pineapple samples were enhanced after coating. Blanching could maintain the color and improve the antioxidative activity of the fresh product, but reduced its yellowness during drying.

Summary: This study identified microwave-assisted extraction as the optimal method for extracting cucurbitane-type triterpenoids from bitter melon. The results showed significant differences in triterpenoid composition between different cultivars, with cultivar 4 having higher quantities of specific triterpenoids. Further evaluation revealed the antiproliferative activity of these triterpenoids on human oral cancer cell lines.

Analysis of Chlorogenic Acid in Sweet Potato Leaf Extracts

Summary: The active constituents of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) in sweet potato leaves vary among different varieties, with the highest contents found in yellow leaves. All three varieties contained lower contents of 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (4,5-di-CQA) and CGAs compared to 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-di-CQA) and 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,4-di-CQA). However, purple leaves had a higher content of 4,5-di-CQA compared to yellow and green leaves.

Effects of aging and diabetes on the deformation mechanisms and molecular structural characteristics of collagen fibrils under daily activity

Summary: Crosslinking affects the mechanical behavior and tissue metabolism of collagen-based tissues. Aging and diabetes alter the crosslinking type and density, thus changing tissue properties. High-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking and advanced-glycation end-products result in uniform deformation under daily activity, while low-connectivity enzymatic crosslinking does not. High-connectivity model displays more sliding, while AGEs induce instability in structures near the binding sites.

An eco-friendly composite hydrogel based on covalently crosslinked cellulose/poly (glycerol citrate) for thallium (І) removal from aqueous solutions

Summary: In this study, a reusable biobased composite hydrogel was successfully synthesized and used for the removal of Tl(I) from aqueous solutions. The hydrogel exhibited high adsorption capacity and thermal stability, and the adsorption process was found to be thermodynamically spontaneous. The results demonstrated that the hydrogel can be reused multiple times without significant loss of its adsorption capacity.

Summary: The potential of multi-layer nanoemulsions for improving the cellular uptake, antioxidant activity, and in vitro bioaccessibility of alpha-tocopherol was examined. The results showed that the multi-layer nanoemulsions significantly enhanced the cellular uptake and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol compared to free coumarin 6. Furthermore, the use of chitosan and dextran sulfate as wall materials in the multi-layer nanoemulsions led to even higher cellular uptake, in vitro bioaccessibility, and antioxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol.
