Summary: This paper investigates the cyclic deformation behavior and fatigue properties of a wire + arc additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Compared to Ti-6Al-4V alloys produced by other additive manufacturing processes, the material used in this study has a coarser primary columnar beta grain structure and alpha microstructure. Fatigue tests were conducted on specimens with horizontal and vertical orientations. The vertical samples, where the loading axis was parallel with the primary columnar beta grains, showed slightly higher fatigue life and a higher cyclic softening rate compared to the horizontal samples. No porosity defects were found, and cracks initiated from either the alpha laths or alpha/beta interface due to cyclic slip localization.

Summary: This study investigated and compared the effect of temperature on the cyclic fatigue resistance of conventional, Gold-Wire, and Fire-Wire nickel-titanium alloy files. The results showed that temperature significantly influenced the cyclic fatigue resistance, with a decrease at higher temperatures and an increase at lower temperatures. Among files with the same geometry, those made of Fire-Wire demonstrated the highest resistance. Therefore, Fire-Wire files are preferred for their higher cyclic fatigue resistance compared to Gold-Wire and conventional nickel-titanium alloy files.

Summary: Understanding the characteristics of nickel-titanium files is crucial for dentists due to their popularity in root canal therapy. The torque required to rotate the files is considered a parameter for stress generation, and understanding the conditions that may cause instrument fractures is important. The stress generated during root canal shaping can lead to microcracks in the instruments and dentinal wall, emphasizing the need to prevent fractures. Various experimental approaches have been used to measure this stress, and this review focuses on the stress generated under different experimental conditions and the factors related to torque generation.

Summary: Bimetallic structures of nickel and commercially pure titanium were successfully manufactured through directed energy deposition metal additive manufacturing, exhibiting different mechanical properties in different configurations. The formation of intermetallic NiTi phase at the interface was confirmed, and a microstructural gradient was observed in the heat-affected zone. The longitudinal and transverse samples showed significant differences in elongation, with the longitudinal samples demonstrating brittle fracture failure during compressive deformation, while the transverse samples exhibited ductile failure.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different heat treatments and temperatures on the cyclic fatigue resistance of 2Shape instruments. The results showed that CM-Wire instruments exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance. Body temperature negatively affected the cyclic fatigue resistance of certain instruments compared with room temperature.

Summary: This in vitro investigation explored the influence of multiple autoclave cycles on the cyclic fatigue resistance of three heat-treated nickel-titanium (NiTi) files. The results showed that ETP files had significantly greater resistance to cyclic fatigue than TN files in all autoclave groups. Repeated autoclave cycles improved the cyclic fatigue resistance of ETP files, but did not affect the cyclic fatigue resistance of TN and PTG files.

Summary: The failure of additive manufactured titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is primarily attributed to process-induced defects rather than pore size. Embedded pores below approximately 85 µm threshold size can achieve wrought level fatigue performance.

Summary: In this study, we compared the mechanical properties of 2Shape mini TS2 instruments made from different sizes and thermally treated nickel-titanium wires. The results showed that files made from controlled memory wire had higher cyclic fatigue resistance regardless of the wire size, and testing at body temperature had a negative impact on the performance of all files. Additionally, the 1.0mm diameter T-wire instruments exhibited higher cyclic fatigue resistance compared to the 1.2mm diameter instruments.

Summary: The present study evaluated and compared the function of the rotational speed of NiTi alloy endodontic rotary files in terms of their resistance to dynamic cyclic fatigue. The results showed that NiTi alloy endodontic rotary files with reciprocating movement at a lower speed exhibited greater resistance to fatigue.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of two different deposition strategies on the tensile and high cycle fatigue properties of wire + arc additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The oscillation build had lower static strength but similar elongation values compared to the parallel pass build. Anisotropic elongation values were observed due to the presence of columnar primary 13 grains, with vertical samples showing higher elongation values parallel to the primary grains. Fatigue strength was comparable to wrought materials and greater than typical cast materials, with crack initiation mostly from pores and microstructural features in the samples.

Summary: This study investigated the possibility of using low-temperature plasma nitriding technology to improve the properties and fatigue life of NiTi dental instruments. The results showed that nitriding process can significantly increase the fatigue life of NiTi instruments in some cases. Nitrided files have promising possibilities for enhancing the surface properties and quality.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of different types of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files and their phase transformation behavior. It was found that CM-wire NiTi files had the lowest bending resistance and HyFlex CM exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance. ProTaper Gold had high torsional strength and low fracture angle, while K3XF had high bending resistance and low cyclic fatigue resistance. ProFile was recommended for re-treatment cases.

Summary: The objective of this study was to measure and compare the impact of the length of CM Gold Wire and CM Blue Wire NiTi alloy endodontic rotary files on their resistance to cyclic fatigue. The results showed significant differences among different length groups, with file length being inversely proportional to cyclic fatigue resistance.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the effects of ambient temperature and post-manufacture heat-treatment on the mechanical behavior of nickel-titanium wires. The results showed that temperature changes had no significant effect on the martensitic modulus of elasticity, maximum transformation strain, and ultimate tensile stress, but the austenitic modulus of elasticity and transformation stress increased with temperature. It was also found that differences in manufacturing/heat treatment conditions and ambient temperature could affect the mechanical behavior of nickel-titanium.
