Purpose: Skin rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting up to 10% of the population in some European countries. Although considered a skin disease, acne rosacea may involve the eyes, causing eyelid and ocular surface inflammation. This study investigated the relationship between skin rosacea and various signs of ocular involvement and evaluated severity of meibomian gland dysfunction in rosacea patients. Methods: The ocular surface and meibomian gland parameters were evaluated in 41 patients with diagnosed skin rosacea and 44 age-matched healthy controls. We analyzed meibomian gland function (meibum quality and meibum expressibility) and morphology (meibography) and lid margin alterations. We correlated our findings with self-reported ocular symptoms and tear film abnormalities (tear film breakup time, Schirmer test). Results: The prevalence of ocular erythema and lid margin alterations was significantly higher in rosacea patients compared with controls. We found that rosacea is accompanied with significant loss of meibomian gland tissue defined as reduced meibomian gland area and decreased meibomian gland density. A positive correlation between margin abnormality score and the extent of meibomian gland loss in rosacea group was observed (r(s) = +0.30, p = 0.005), suggesting that ocular rosacea is accompanied by meibomian gland dropout. Conclusion: Skin rosacea is associated with ocular erythema and lid margin abnormalities. Our results suggest that ocular signs of rosacea may influence meibomian gland morphology, causing meibomian gland loss.

Summary: For patients with CKD, two doses of mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech's Comirnaty COVID-19 Vaccine and Moderna's mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine) can effectively induce both humoral and cellular immune responses. Important factors influencing the antibody levels after vaccination include pre-vaccination history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, age, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil absolute count, and hemoglobin level. Patients with a pre-vaccination history of SARS-CoV-2 infection have higher cellular immunity. Cellular immunity depends on the albumin level.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between gene polymorphisms and the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that the examined gene polymorphisms were not significant risk factors for GDM in the population studied, but KCNJ11 gene expression in placenta was associated with APGAR score in newborns.

THADA, SDHAF4, and MACF1 Gene Polymorphisms and Placental Expression in Women with Gestational Diabetes

Przemyslaw Ustianowski, Damian Malinowski, Michal Czerewaty, Krzysztof Safranow, Maciej Tarnowski, Violetta Dziedziejko, Andrzej Pawlik

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations of THADA rs7578597 T>C, SDHAF4 rs1048886 A>G, and MACF1 rs2296172 A>G gene polymorphisms with the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and their relationships with clinical parameters. The results showed no significant associations between these gene polymorphisms and the onset of GDM, but SDHAF4 rs1048886 A>G may be associated with pre-pregnancy body weight and birth weight in pregnant women.

Summary: Psoriasis is a common chronic skin disease characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes, parakeratosis, and T-cell infiltration. Adipose tissue produces adipokines, including leptin, resistin, and adiponectin, which may play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. This study examined the plasma levels of adiponectin, leptin, and resistin in psoriasis patients and their correlation with disease activity parameters and clinical parameters.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the use of HE4 in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer recurrence and the changes in its levels during recurrence diagnosis and chemotherapy treatment. The results showed that elevated HE4 levels significantly influenced the time to first disease recurrence and patient survival.

TGF-β1 and TGFβR2 Gene Polymorphisms in Patients with Unstable Angina

Damian Malinowski, Krzysztof Safranow, Andrzej Pawlik

Summary: Acute coronary syndromes occur due to a sudden decrease in the size of a coronary artery as a result of plaque rupture, swelling, or the formation of blood clots. Various inflammatory and proatherogenic mediators, including cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, are involved. This study investigated the association between specific gene polymorphisms and the risk of unstable angina, as well as clinical parameters associated with ischemic heart disease. The results showed that the studied gene polymorphisms were not significant risk factors for unstable angina in the population, but the TGFBR2 gene polymorphism may influence lipid parameters in patients with coronary artery disease.

Influence of Clinical and Genetic Factors on the Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A 3-Year Follow-Up

Elzbieta Krytkowska, Zofia Ulanczyk, Aleksandra Grabowicz, Krzysztof Safranow, Milosz Piotr Kawa, Andrzej Palucha, Anna Wasowska, Ewa Matczynska, Anna Boguszewska-Chachulska, Anna Machalinska

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression and clinical characteristics, demographic, and environmental risk factors. The study also examined the influence of three genetic AMD polymorphisms on AMD progression. A group of 94 participants with early or intermediate AMD were followed up after 3 years, and factors such as visual outcomes, medical history, and retinal and choroidal imaging data were collected. The findings showed that worse initial visual acuity, presence of wet AMD in fellow eyes, and active thyroxine supplementation were associated with AMD progression.

Analysis of Donor to Recipient Pathogen Transmission in Relation to Cold Ischemic Time and Other Selected Aspects of Lung Transplantation-Single Center Experience

Summary: Infections are a major cause of early postoperative death after lung transplantation. Analysis of transplantations and culture results showed that donor bronchial aspirates (DBA), graft endobronchial swabs (GES), and recipient cultures (RC) had positive results before and after the procedure. Longer donor hospitalization was associated with Gram-negative bacteria isolation in DBA. Longer cold ischemic time (CIT) was related to the isolation of Gram-positive bacteria other than Staphylococcus aureus in GES and longer recipient stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). Positive cultures in DBA, GES, and RBA were not associated with recipient death.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between the presence of cilioretinal artery (CRA) and the incidence, severity, and progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The results showed that CRA did not have a protective effect on the incidence and progression of AMD, but it may affect the severity of the disease, although the mechanism is unclear.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression and localization of IL-17A and IL-17B in gingival tissue of patients with periodontitis. The results showed that the mRNA expression of IL-17B was significantly lower in patients with periodontitis compared to healthy subjects, while there was no significant difference in the expression of IL-17A. Furthermore, the expression of IL-17A was significantly correlated with the approximal plaque index, and the expression of IL-17B showed a borderline statistical significance correlation with the clinical attachment level.
