Summary: Treatment selection for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) should be based on a comprehensive stage classification that includes ocular symptoms, lid margin abnormalities, meibum grade, and ocular surface staining. Different treatment modalities have varying efficacy based on the meiboscore determined by noncontact meibography, with intense pulsed light therapy showing improvement even in cases with high meiboscore. Prospective studies are needed to further validate these findings.

Summary: In this study, meibography of 65-year-old residents in Oslo, Norway was analyzed, and it was found that moderate meibomian gland atrophy was common and not gender-specific. Meibography alone cannot discriminate between meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and non-MGD, thus both morphological and functional tests are necessary for screening MGD.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light (IPL) combined with meibomian gland expression (MGX) for the treatment of refractory multiple and recurrent chalazia. The combination therapy significantly improved all parameters except meiboscore and the Schirmer value, while MGX alone only significantly improved meibum grade. No adverse events occurred in either group. IPL-MGX treatment was effective and safe for multiple and recurrent chalazia without surgery or curettage.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between blepharitis-related symptom scores, tear film functions, and conjunctival microbiota in patients with ocular rosacea (OR) compared with healthy controls. The results showed that patients with OR had worse tear breakup time and Schirmer scores, and higher blepharitis symptom scores. The dominant bacterial species in conjunctival microbiota also differed between the two groups. This suggests a potential role of conjunctival microbiota in the pathogenesis of OR.

Summary: This study evaluated ocular surface manifestations in patients with acne rosacea and found that AR patients had higher levels of foreign body sensation, itching, dryness, hyperemia, conjunctival telangiectasia, and meibomitis compared to healthy subjects. AR patients also exhibited higher t-BUT and Schirmer-2 test scores, lower OCT meibography scores, and higher OSDI scores. Conjunctival telangiectasia was identified as a major independent predictor for AR diagnosis.

Summary: This study analyzed the instrumental factors related to Meibomian gland contrast and assessed whether the equations used to compute contrast impact the ability to identify abnormal individuals. The results showed that Meibomian gland contrast is a useful biomarker of disease related to the glands, and contrast measurement should be determined using contrast-enhanced images. However, the method used to compute contrast did not influence the results.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of meibomian gland (MG) atrophy in US-based cataract surgery patients. The results showed that 95.1% of the 391 patients had MG atrophy, with 50.4% having grade 1, 25.8% grade 2, and 18.9% grade 3. The study suggests that MG atrophy is common in patients undergoing cataract surgery and calls for the routine use of meibography during preoperative screening.

Summary: For patients with CKD, two doses of mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech's Comirnaty COVID-19 Vaccine and Moderna's mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine) can effectively induce both humoral and cellular immune responses. Important factors influencing the antibody levels after vaccination include pre-vaccination history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, age, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil absolute count, and hemoglobin level. Patients with a pre-vaccination history of SARS-CoV-2 infection have higher cellular immunity. Cellular immunity depends on the albumin level.

Summary: Acute coronary syndromes occur due to a sudden decrease in the size of a coronary artery as a result of plaque rupture, swelling, or the formation of blood clots. Various inflammatory and proatherogenic mediators, including cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, are involved. This study investigated the association between specific gene polymorphisms and the risk of unstable angina, as well as clinical parameters associated with ischemic heart disease. The results showed that the studied gene polymorphisms were not significant risk factors for unstable angina in the population, but the TGFBR2 gene polymorphism may influence lipid parameters in patients with coronary artery disease.

Summary: Infections are a major cause of early postoperative death after lung transplantation. Analysis of transplantations and culture results showed that donor bronchial aspirates (DBA), graft endobronchial swabs (GES), and recipient cultures (RC) had positive results before and after the procedure. Longer donor hospitalization was associated with Gram-negative bacteria isolation in DBA. Longer cold ischemic time (CIT) was related to the isolation of Gram-positive bacteria other than Staphylococcus aureus in GES and longer recipient stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). Positive cultures in DBA, GES, and RBA were not associated with recipient death.
