The convergence of tuberculosis and diabetes represents a co-epidemic that threatens progress against tuberculosis. We have investigated type 2 diabetes as a risk factor for tuberculosis susceptibility, and have used as experimental model whole blood infected in vitro with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Blood samples from diabetic patients were found to have a higher absolute neutrophil count that non-diabetic controls, but their immune functionality seemed impaired because they displayed a lower capacity to phagocytose M. tuberculosis, a finding that had been previously reported only for monocytes. In contrast, an increased production of TNF alpha was detected in infected blood from diabetic patients. Despite the altered phagocytic capacity showed by cells from these patients, the antimicrobial activity measured in both whole blood and monocyte derived macrophages was similar to that of controls. This unexpected result prompts further improvements in the whole blood model to analyze the immune response of diabetes patients to tuberculosis.

Beta-blocker treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation attenuates spontaneous calcium release-induced electrical activity

Veronica Jimenez-Sabado, Sergi Casabella-Ramon, Anna Llach, Ignasi Gich, Sandra Casellas, Francisco Ciruela, S. R. Wayne Chen, Jose M. Guerra, Antonino Ginel, Raul Benitez, Juan Cinca, Carmen Tarifa, Leif Hove-Madsen

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of I3-blocker treatment on spontaneous calcium release events or transient inward currents (ITI) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The results showed that I3-blocker treatment did not affect calcium current density, but it reduced ITI frequency and calcium spark frequency, as well as the levels of phosphorylated RyR2 and phospholamban.

Summary: This study conducted a survey to show how clinicians currently approach the knowledge gap in dealing with recurrences after a failed ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF). The majority of respondents perform routine monitoring for AF recurrences after ablation and prefer a long-term monitoring strategy. The combination of absence of symptoms and recorded AF is considered as the definition of success by most respondents.

Summary: The assessment of trace metal content in our fish diet is important due to the adverse effect on human health. Little information is available for Southern Spain, a region characterized by high seafood intake. Nine species from the Bay of Cádiz with high commercial value were selected and found to be generally safe for consumption according to health limits provided by World, European and Spanish legislations.

Location and building material determine fouling assemblages within marinas: A case study in Madeira Island (NE Atlantic, Portugal)

Summary: Marinas serve as hubs for non-indigenous species and are part of a network of highly modified water bodies connected by recreational maritime traffic. Floating structures, particularly pontoons, have higher abundance of non-indigenous species within marinas and pose a risk for their introduction, establishment, and spread. This study investigated the influence of marina location and substratum type on fouling assemblages recruitment, exploring water parameters and substratum chemical composition. The findings highlight the importance of marina differences and structural morphology in shaping assemblages, with variations observed in species composition, biomass, and structure. Understanding these factors can contribute to better management of urban ecosystems and mitigating coastal ecosystems degradation.

Summary: A model of atrial infarction was established by selective occlusion of atrial coronary branches. Multifrequency impedance mapping can recognize atrial infarct scarring with lower data variability, which has potential application in the study of atrial arrhythmia mechanisms.

Ethical considerations about the collection of biological samples for genetic analysis in clinical trials

Ines Galende-Dominguez, Octavio M. Rivero-Lezcano

Summary: Progress in precision medicine is achieved through clinical trials using genetic biomarkers to guide patient stratification and assign treatment or control groups. Genetic analysis of biomarkers is essential, involving the study of biological samples from donor patients. However, it is common to introduce purposes beyond the trial's objectives, leading to potential risks of data misuse and re-identification of sample donors. Therefore, genetic analysis should be restricted to the trial's main objectives or well-justified goals.

Regional disparity on patient characteristics and perceptions after implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation: results from an EHRA patient survey

Lukasz Januszkiewicz, Sergio Barra, Rui Providencia, Julian K. R. Chun, Giulio Conte, Michal M. Farkowski, Jose M. Guerra, Eloi Marijon, Carlo de Asmundis, Serge Boveda

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify potential regional disparities in characteristics of ICD recipients, patient perceptions and perspectives after implantation and level of information provided to patients. The study found that patients in Western Europe reported higher satisfaction after ICD placement, while patients in Central/Eastern Europe felt more optimally informed at the time of device implantation. Therefore, novel strategies are needed to address regional differences in patients' quality of life and provision of information.

Expression and Impact of Adenosine A3 Receptors on Calcium Homeostasis in Human Right Atrium

Carmen Tarifa, Veronica Jimenez-Sabado, Rafael Franco, Jose Montiel, Jose Guerra, Francisco Ciruela, Leif Hove-Madsen

Summary: Increased activation of adenosine A(2A) receptors (A(2A)Rs) leads to higher incidence of spontaneous calcium release in atrial fibrillation (AF). Adenosine A(3) receptors (A(3)Rs) can counteract excessive A(2A)R activation, but their role in the atrium is not well understood. This study found that A(3)Rs inhibit spontaneous calcium release in human atrial myocytes and can attenuate pathological elevations in calcium release events, suggesting their potential therapeutic importance.

Summary: The accumulation of lipids in cardiomyocytes leads to cardiac dysfunction. Blocking cardiomyocyte cholesteryl ester (CE) loading specifically with antibodies against the P3 sequence of the LRP1 receptor improves cardiac insulin sensitivity. The impact of anti-P3 antibodies on biophysical alterations was analyzed.

How much waste can the amphipod Gammarus insensibilis remove from aquaculture effluents? A first step toward IMTA

M. Castilla-Gavilan, J. M. Guerra-Garcia, J. M. Moreno-Oliva, I. Hachero-Cruzado

Summary: Marine amphipods, specifically Gammarus insensibilis, have shown potential as a live feed resource for Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture. This study examined the waste removal capabilities of G. insensibilis at different densities and fed on dry or wet detritus. The species exhibited high survival rates and showed the highest tolerance for nitrate, followed by nitrite and ammonium. Low-density individuals were found to remove significantly higher amounts of detritus, regardless of its dry or wet state. Wet detritus is recommended for better handling and scaled-up trials in aquaculture systems.

Summary: This study characterizes the dynamics of electrograms after pulsed field ablation (PFA) in areas of irreversible electroporation (IRE) and reversible electroporation. The results show that electrograms can differentiate between reversible electroporation and IRE areas during the first 30 minutes post ablation, and provide valuable information for immediate lesion assessment after PFA.

Transcritical bifurcation in a multiparametric nonlinear system

Osmin Ferrer, Jose Guerra, Alberto Reyes

Summary: This paper studies a multiparametric nonlinear system with a transcritical bifurcation in a region of points in R-3. The boundaries of the parametric regions where important qualitative changes occur in the dynamics of the system are determined. Equilibrium points in each region are also established and classified. Finally, the stability of the equilibrium points at infinity of the system obtained from Poincare compactification is classified, and the global phase portrait of the system is made.
