The present study reports a novel, facile, biosynthesis route for the synthesis of carbon nanodots (CDs) with an approximate quantum yield of 38.5%, using Musk melon extract as a naturally derived-precursor material. The synthesis of CDs was established by using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Dynamic light scattering, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The as-prepared CDs possess an eminent fluorescence under UV-light ((ex)=365nm). The size range of CDs was found to be in the range of 5-10nm. The authors further explored the use of such biosynthesised CDs as a photocatalyst material for removal of industrial dye. Degradation of methylene blue dye was performed in a photocatalytic reactor and monitored using UV-vis spectroscopy. The CDs show excellent dye degradation capability of 37.08% in 60min and reaction rate of 0.0032min(-1). This study shows that synthesised CDs are highly stable in nature, and possess potential application in wastewater treatment.

Improved Solvothermal Synthesis of γ-Fe2O3 Magnetic Nanoparticles for SiO2 Coating

Rashmi Mahajan, Subramanian Suriyanarayanan, Ian A. Nicholls

Summary: Monodisperse magnetic gamma-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared using SDS and PEG 6000 as double capping reagents, leading to improved uniformity and colloidal stability. These MNPs with silica coatings can be used in a variety of applications, such as magnetic separation, catalysis, and templated nanogel synthesis.

Frequency-controlled dielectrophoresis-driven wetting of nematic liquid crystals

Carl Brown, Akhshay S. Bhadwal, Andrew M. J. Edwards, Ian C. Sage, Antariksh Saxena, Nigel J. Mottram

Summary: It has been found that the wetting of anisotropic nematic liquid crystal sessile droplets follows the same relationship as isotropic liquid droplets. The dielectrowetting coefficient, which determines the reduction in the contact angle, can be controlled by the frequency of the applied voltage.

Polymeric micelles and cancer therapy: an ingenious multimodal tumor-targeted drug delivery system

Sharath Kumar Hari, Ankita Gauba, Neeraj Shrivastava, Ravi Mani Tripathi, Sudhir Kumar Jain, Akhilesh Kumar Pandey

Summary: Polymeric micelles (PMs) are multifunctional nanoparticles with promising applications in cancer therapeutics. They can alter drug release profile and concentrate drugs in the target zone, making them suitable for poorly soluble medicines. Moreover, PMs can serve as smart drug carriers, targeting specific cancer sites using various stimuli and improving the efficacy of targeted drug delivery.

Summary: Due to the instability and high cost of natural enzymes, nanozymes have emerged as promising alternatives in various applications. With their unique physicochemical properties, nanozymes possess enzyme-like activity and can overcome the limitations of natural protein-based enzymes. Tuning the catalytic activity of nanozymes provides specificity, benefiting disease diagnosis and drug delivery.

Deploying a microbial consortium of Serendipita indica, Rhizophagus intraradices, and Azotobacter chroococcum to boost drought tolerance in maize

Jaagriti Tyagi, Arti Mishra, Shilpi Kumari, Sakshi Singh, Himani Agarwal, Ramesh N. Pudake, Ajit Varma, Naveen Chandra Joshi

Summary: The study found that tri-inoculant (SRA) application can enhance the growth and drought tolerance of maize under water deficit conditions. The physical and physico-biochemical characteristics of the maize, including root and shoot length, fresh weight, dry weight, and membrane electrolyte leakage, were significantly improved by SRA inoculation. SRA-inoculated maize also exhibited higher antioxidant enzyme activities. These findings suggest that SRA application has multiple advantages for maize growth and may have potential for boosting the growth of other crops in the future against various environmental challenges.

Ultrasensitive and selective colorimetric detection of uric acid using peroxidase mimetic activity of biogenic palladium nanoparticles

Ravi Mani Tripathi, Sang J. Chung

Summary: A highly sensitive and selective colorimetric assay using biogenic palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) was developed for the detection of uric acid. The instrument-free detection had a limit of detection of 0.05 μM and a limit of quantification of 1.11 μM. The assay showed a linear response in the concentration range of 0.05 to 1 μM with a linear regression correlation coefficient of 0.99841. This colorimetric detection provides a rapid, cost-effective, and easy-to-use platform for the clinical diagnosis of uric acid biomarkers.

Summary: In this study, fish collagen molecules were coated onto polyurethane fibers using a hydrothermal precipitation approach, improving their wettability. The fiber diameter increased while the pore size decreased, and the water contact angle decreased. The concentration of the coating solution and collagen loading had a significant effect on the material properties.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics like ampicillin in developing and industrializing countries leads to the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria and adverse effects on health. To address this issue, a colorimetric assay using poly(vinyl alcohol)-capped silver nanoparticles was developed to detect ampicillin. The assay exhibited good selectivity and sensitivity, with a detection limit of 6.2 μM. This method provides a real-time and easy-to-use platform for detecting ampicillin in actual samples.

Resistance strategies for defense against Albugo candida causing white rust disease

Shradha Nirwan, Archana Kumari Sharma, Ravi Mani Tripathi, Aparna Maitra Pati, Neeraj Shrivastava

Summary: Albugo candida is a pathogenic fungus that causes white rust on Brassicaceae crops. It infects the aerial parts of the plants, including leaves, and causes the formation of white or creamy yellow blisters. Disease management strategies such as fungicide treatments and breeding disease-resistant varieties have been used. However, the high variability among A. candida isolates makes it difficult to understand the diverse symptoms of the disease.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the weak anchoring effects in a thin two-dimensional pinned static ridge of nematic liquid crystal on a flat solid substrate in a passive gas atmosphere. Numerical investigations reveal five qualitatively different types of energetically preferred solutions, which are supported by experimental results. The study provides insights into the behavior of the director within the ridge and the breaking of anchoring near the contact lines.
