Uca bengali Crane, 1975 females have two small feeding claws but males have one small feeding claw and another big claw used for waving and fights. On the basis of video recordings of feeding motions and duration, and morphometric measurements of body size (measured as carapace width) and feeding claw size (measured as dactyl length and width), differences in feeding rate per crab and per feeding claw, feeding duration, and feeding claw size between sexes were studied with the main aim to test male ability to compensate for the loss of one functional feeding claw. Additionally, feeding rate of males and females of small and large size classes was studied. Furthermore, correlations between feeding rate and body size, as well as feeding claw size and body size were investigated. Results showed that increased feeding rate per feeding claw coupled with a larger feeding claw allowed males to compensate for the loss of one feeding claw. Smaller males and females fed faster than larger ones. There was a negative correlation between feeding rate and carapace width. Feeding duration did not vary between males and females of comparable size. A positive correlation was observed between feeding claw size and carapace width.

Small males of the fiddler crab Austruca perplexa court more in the off-peak breeding period when large males court less

Summary: Animals adjust reproductive investment based on their competitive abilities, with large males investing more in courtship during peak breeding periods. Small males, on the other hand, invest more in courtship during off-peak periods.

'PHOTOGRAPHY' AS A USEFUL METHOD FOR ESTIMATING THE DENSITY, SEX-RATIO AND BODY SIZE OF THE SURFACE-ACTIVE AUSTRUCA PERPLEXA (H. MILNE EDWARDS, 1852) (BRACHYURA, OCYPODIDAE)

Summary: This study compared the non-destructive 'photography' method with the 'burrow excavation' method in estimating crab density, sex-ratio, and body sizes in a fiddler crab population. The results showed that there were no differences in the parameters estimated between the two methods. This suggests that the 'photography' method could be a suitable alternative to the 'burrow excavation' method.

Males signal their breeding burrow characteristics to females in the fiddler crab Austruca perplexa

Fahmida Wazed Tina, Daisuke Muramatsu

Summary: Females often choose mates based on their courtship signals, but the reasons for this selection are often unclear. In the fiddler crab Austruca perplexa, male signals (major-claw waving rates) were found to be correlated with the characteristics of their defended resources (breeding burrows width and depth). By using these signals, females can predict the quality of the burrows and decide whether to inspect them. The honesty of these signals is beneficial for both sexes and can easily evolve in their signaling system.

Summary: As the global population grows and urbanization becomes more prevalent, cities face challenges in providing convenient and sustainable lifestyles. The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a solution to this, connecting physical objects using electronics and communication networks. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and analyzing IoT data, opportunities arise to design and manage smart cities. This review article explores the characteristics of smart cities, the architecture of IoT, wireless communication technologies, AI algorithms, and the integration of IoT and AI in smart city scenarios.

Temporal variations in the air, soil, and fiddler crab (Austruca perplexa) burrow temperatures in southern Thailand

Uthai Kuhapong, Fahmida Wazed Tina, Kiadtisak Limsakun, Suranan Watthanaphong, Ekapote Luckban, Teethat Piyakun

Summary: This study found that during the day, the burrow temperature of Austruca perplexa crabs was lower than the soil temperature, but higher at night. The air temperature was mostly lower than the soil or burrow temperatures. This suggests that A. perplexa crab burrows can regulate the internal temperature and provide a suitable temperature environment for the crabs.
