Grafting of vegetable seedlings is a unique horticultural technology practiced for many years in East Asia to overcome issues associated with intensive cultivation using limited arable land. This technology was introduced to Europe and other countries in the late 20th century along with improved grafting methods suitable for commercial production of grafted vegetable seedlings. Tomato grafting is becoming a well-developed practice worldwide with many horticultural advantages. The primary motivation for grafting tomato has been to prevent the damage caused by soilborne pathogens under intensive production system. However, recent reports suggest that grafting onto suitable rootstocks can also alleviate the adverse effects of abiotic stresses such as salinity, water, temperature, and heavy metals besides enhancing the efficiency of water and nutrient use of tomato plants. This review gives an overview of the scientific literatures on the various aspects of tomato grafting including important steps of grafting, grafting methods, scion-rootstock interaction, and rootstock-derived changes in vegetative growth, fruit yield, and quality in grafted plants under different growing conditions. This review also highlights the economic significance of grafted tomato cultivation and offers discussion on the future thrust and technical issues that need to be addressed for the effective adoption of grafting.

Management of Root-Knot Nematode with Non-Chemical Methods for Sustainable Production of Cucumber under Protected Cultivation

Narpinderjeet Kaur Dhillon, Sukhjeet Kaur, Anupam, Harwinder Singh Buttar, Kuldip S. Singh, Pratapsingh Khapte, Pardeep Kumar

Summary: The adoption of successive cropping patterns in soil-based closed structures in India is leading to the buildup of soil-borne pathogens and pests, which is hindering sustainable production of vegetables. Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) pose a significant threat to protected cultivation, requiring significant time and money for management. A study explored the potential of plant-based by-products as amendments for RKN management in cucumbers grown under a plastic greenhouse.

Exogenous Growth Regulators and Water Stress Enhance Long-Term Storage Quality Characteristics of Onion

Goraksha C. Wakchaure, Pratapsingh S. Khapte, Satish Kumar, Paramsivam Suresh Kumar, Leo Sabatino, Pradeep Kumar

Summary: Exogenous growth regulators (GRs) are important for alleviating water stress and sustaining crop yields. However, their effects on post-harvest quality of onions, particularly post-monsoon onions for long-term storage, have not been studied. Thus, we investigated the interaction between water stress and GRs on the physiochemical and functional quality attributes of onions during long-term storage.

Summary: Tomatoes are highly demanded in almost every country due to their gastronomic versatility and nutritional value. Factors such as drought, salinity, and inadequate temperature can decrease tomato yield and affect various metabolic pathways. Biotechnological tools can be used to alter tomato genes and improve its adaptability to abiotic stress. Biomimetic biotechnological approaches (BBA), which imitate nature's solutions, have gained attention for developing sustainable strategies to enhance tolerance in plants. In this review, genetic sequences and molecules that were targets of biotechnological intervention in tomatoes are discussed, along with the implications and perspectives within the GMO debate.

Combinatorial Effect of Fertigation Rate and Scheduling on Tomato Performance under Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse in Indian Humid Sub-Tropics

Sonam Rawat, Lalit Bhatt, Pramod Kumar Singh, Poonam Gautam, Suresh Kumar Maurya, Leo Sabatino, Pradeep Kumar

Summary: Protected cultivation is resource-efficient, but also resource-intensive. This study assessed the effect of different NPK fertilization rates and scheduling approaches on tomato cultivation in Indian sub-tropics. The recommended dose of fertilizer (100% RDF) with specific scheduling was found to be optimum for tomato yield, water use efficiency, and economics under protected conditions.

Hira Singh, Bhallan Singh Sekhon, Pradeep Kumar, Rajinder Kumar Dhall, Ruma Devi, Tarsem Singh Dhillon, Suman Sharma, Anil Khar, Ramesh Kumar Yadav, Bhoopal Singh Tomar, Theodora Ntanasi, Leo Sabatino, Georgia Ntatsi

Summary: To address challenges such as climate change, food insecurity, and population growth, the development of hybrid vegetable crops is crucial. Genetic mechanisms like self-incompatibility, male sterility, and gynoecism play a vital role in reducing costs and streamlining hybrid seed production. This review focuses on elucidating processes related to floral characteristics, genetic regulation, pollen biology, and development, with specific attention to masculine and feminine traits in cucurbits and hybridization approaches for biofortification. It also provides insights into biotechnological advancements and their future use in major vegetable crops' genetic systems.

History, evolution and domestication of garlic: a review

Rajinder Kumar Dhall, Pablo F. Cavagnaro, Hira Singh, Subhankar Mandal

Summary: The center of origin of garlic is Central Asia, with its closest wild relative being Allium longicuspis. Religious writings, historical records, and ancient medical texts have all mentioned and/or prescribed the use of garlic. Recent studies have shown that garlic compounds have broad-spectrum antibacterial and antimycotic effects. Classification of garlic is based on various factors, including growth traits, morphology, genetic markers, and ecological characteristics. Although garlic is mostly propagated asexually, fertile wild garlic has been found in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Genetic and environmental factors affecting fertility and seed production have been studied, and Bt-resistant transgenic lines have been developed. This review discusses the historical and current use of garlic, its classification, the molecular mechanisms of garlic sterility, and progress made in unlocking sexual reproduction for garlic breeding and production.
