Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging has become a cornerstone in the evaluation of heart failure. It provides a comprehensive evaluation by answering all the pertinent clinical questions across the full pathological spectrum of heart failure. Nowadays, CMR is considered the gold standard in evaluation of ventricular volumes, wall motion and systolic function. Through its unique ability of tissue characterization, it provides incremental diagnostic and prognostic information and thus has emerged as a comprehensive imaging modality in heart failure. This review outlines the role of main conventional CMR sequences in the evaluation of heart failure and their impact in the management and prognosis.

Summary: Individuals of South Asian ancestry have a higher risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Coronary artery calcium volume and density can identify unique plaque characteristics in this population, providing important prognostic information. Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with CAC density and volume.

99mTechnetium-labeled cardiac scintigraphy for suspected amyloidosis: a review of current and future directions

Jean Michel Saad, Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed, Yushui Han, Subha Saeed, Payam Pournazari, Mouaz H. Al-Mallah

Summary: Cardiac amyloidosis is a form of restrictive cardiomyopathy that is often underdiagnosed and can rapidly progress to heart failure. Evaluating CA requires a multimodal approach, with the resurgence of technetium-labeled cardiac scintigraphy playing a key role in its diagnosis.

Shaw, Jeroen J. Bax

Summary: The proportion of calcified plaque in patients with ACS increased significantly with older age, with lower calcification rates in patients younger than 50 years old. A high proportion of high risk markers such as low-attenuation plaque were observed in younger patients, while CACS was found to be >0 in a large percentage of patients older than 50 years.

Yushui Han, Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed, Chris Schwemmer, Myra Cocker, Talal S. Alnabelsi, Jean Michel Saad, Juan C. Ramirez Giraldo, Mouaz H. Al-Mallah

Summary: This study assessed the interoperator and intraoperator variability of coronary CT angiography-derived FFRCT using a machine learning-based postprocessing prototype. The results showed a high degree of reproducibility for FFRCT and greater variability in distal segments compared to proximal/mid segments.

Incremental prognostic value of positron emission tomography derived left ventricular mass

Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed, Jean Michel Saad, Yushui Han, Maan Malahfji, Mouaz H. Al-Mallah

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of positron emission tomography (PET) derived left ventricular mass (LVM) in addition to clinical variables and myocardial flow reserve (MFR). The results showed that LVM was not independently associated with outcomes and had no incremental prognostic value over MFR and clinical variables.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the prognostic value of myocardial flow reserve (MFR) using the latest generation of digital PET scanners in patients with suspected or known CAD. The results showed that impaired MFR was significantly associated with adverse events, and it significantly improved the predictive ability over traditional risk factors.
