Evaluation of root porosity and radial oxygen loss of disomic addition lines of Hordeum marinum in wheat

Hordeum marinum Huds. is a waterlogging-tolerant wild relative of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Greater root porosity (gas volume per root volume) and formation of a barrier to reduce root radial O-2 loss (ROL) contribute to the waterlogging tolerance of H. marinum and these traits are evident in some H. marinum-wheat amphiploids. We evaluated root porosity, ROL patterns and tolerance to hypoxic stagnant conditions for 10 various H. marinum (two accessions) disomic chromosome addition (DA) lines in wheat (two varieties), produced from two H. marinum-wheat amphiploids and their recurrent wheat parents. None of the DA lines had a barrier to ROL or higher root porosity than the wheat parents. Lack of a root ROL barrier in the six DA lines for H. marinum accession H21 in Chinese Spring (CS) wheat indicates that the gene(s) for this trait do not reside on one of these six chromosomes; unfortunately, chromosome 3 of H. marinum has not been isolated in CS. Unlike the H21-CS amphiploid, which formed a partial ROL barrier in roots, the H90-Westonia amphiploid and the four derived DA lines available did not. The unaltered root aeration traits in the available DA lines challenge the strategy of using H. marinum as a donor of these traits to wheat.

Dryland field validation of genotypic variation in salt tolerance of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) determined under controlled conditions

Summary: The study compared the growth and yield of chickpea genotypes grown in controlled saline and non-saline conditions in the greenhouse, as well as in saline and non-saline conditions in a semiarid field. Genotypic differences in salt tolerance and sensitivity were observed under controlled conditions, but not all genotypes selected for salt tolerance in controlled environments were tolerant in dryland saline fields. Salinity increased leaf ion concentrations and had a significant impact on yield, but the correlation between leaf ion concentrations and yield in saline soil varied among genotypes.

Salt tolerance in relation to elemental concentrations in leaf cell vacuoles and chloroplasts of a C-4 monocotyledonous halophyte

Summary: Halophytes accumulate high concentrations of salt in vacuoles while maintaining lower levels in the cytoplasm. This study assessed the salt concentrations in different cell types of a halophytic plant and linked the elemental concentrations in chloroplasts to their ultrastructure and photosynthetic performance. The findings suggest that specific cellular salt distributions and regulation of salt concentrations in chloroplasts contribute to salinity tolerance in the plant.

Effects of electroconductive materials on treatment performance and microbial community structure in biofilter systems with silicone tubings

Summary: Biofilter systems coupled with microbial electrochemical technology can improve the removal performance of pollutants. This study found that using coke as the electroconductive substrate in biofilter systems resulted in better removal of NH4+-N, NO3--N, and PO43--P compared to gravel systems. The presence of silicone tubings also played a crucial role in oxygen supply. The results provide valuable insights for the application of coke in composite matrix systems.

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals molecular regulation of salt tolerance in two contrasting chickpea genotypes

Summary: Salinity is a major abiotic stress that causes significant agricultural losses globally. In this study, the leaf transcriptome of two chickpea genotypes, Rupali and Genesis836, were analyzed under control and salt-stressed conditions. The results showed that although these genotypes have similar primary salt response mechanisms, their contrasting salt response is primarily attributed to differential expression of genes involved in ion transport and photosynthesis. Furthermore, potential candidate genes for improving salt tolerance in chickpeas were identified.

Cassava Witches' Broom Disease in Southeast Asia: A Review of Its Distribution and Associated Symptoms

Summary: Cassava witches' broom disease (CWBD) is a major disease of cassava in Southeast Asia, causing reduced root yields. This study reviewed and corroborated published information on CWBD biology and epidemiology and made several important findings. CWBD symptoms in Southeast Asia are distinct from those in Argentina and Brazil, and the disease develops later compared to another major cassava disease, cassava mosaic disease. The phytoplasma associated with CWBD belongs to different ribosomal groups, and there is no conclusive evidence linking it as the causing agent of CWBD.

Summary: This study evaluates the response of cultivated and wild soybean genotypes to salt stress. It finds that wild soybean has greater tolerance to salinity than cultivated soybean due to better ion exclusion from leaves and photosynthetic cells.

Summary: This study identified root traits related to waterlogging tolerance in C4 perennial Urochloa grasses, including increased aerenchyma formation, steeper root angles and greater root lengths in tolerant genotypes. Tolerant genotypes showed deeper roots, steeper root angle, larger root biomass, and greater shoot biomass under stagnant conditions. Total root length had the strongest positive influence on shoot dry mass, suggesting it can be used as a proxy for selecting waterlogging tolerant Urochloa genotypes.
