Introduction - It is well known that berries have beneficial effects on health, owing to their content of phenolic molecules, such as anthocyanin, quercetin and phenolic acid, as well as their content of vitamins, minerals and fiber. There is a gradually increasing body of evidence suggesting that these bioactive molecules have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and neuroprotective effects. Owing to their antioxidant effects, berry consumption brings positive effects against cardiovascular diseases, obesity, ageing and neuro-degenerative diseases. Specific objectives - This paper was aimed to highlight natural compounds and health effects of the berries; some mechanisms explored by experimental studies, and to outline human intervention trial. Thus, this review could be useful to develop consumption recommendations and following research in health outcomes.
