Early detection of Toxoplasma gondii infection by using a interferon gamma release assay: A review

Antibody-based serological tests are currently the most common diagnostic methods for detection of Toxoplasma gondii; however, these tests bear several limitations. Recently, Interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA), a T-cell-based test, was introduced as an in vitro test for detection of T. gondii infection. Few studies have investigated the potential role of cell immunity in diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. IGRA accurately distinguished infected from uninfected individuals, showing strong lymphocyte activation after in vitro stimulation with T. gondii antigens, even during the first days of life. IGRA is an easy-operation and low-cost method to measure cell mediated immunity against T. gondii. The results of this review underline the importance of evaluating cellular immunity to establish an early diagnosis particularly for congenital toxoplasmosis. Therefore, ELISA-based IGRA holds the potential to become a useful diagnostic tool for early detection of T. gondii infection. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Evaluation of human coronavirus OC43 and SARS-COV-2 in children with respiratory tract infection during the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: This study evaluated the frequency and coinfection rate of HCoV-OC43 in the current COVID-19 pandemic, finding that both HCoV-OC43 and SARS-COV-2 had similar occurrence rates in children with respiratory symptoms. Patients with HCoV-OC43 had significantly lower median lymphocyte counts compared to those with SARS-COV-2 infection. Further research on the cocirculation of these coronaviruses in different regions is recommended.

Chest CT severity score: assessment of COVID-19 severity and short-term prognosis in hospitalized Iranian patients

Summary: This study describes the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and imaging features of hospitalized children with COVID-19 in an Iranian referral pediatrics hospital. It compares these parameters between different groups of patients and highlights the association between underlying diseases and severe COVID-19 in children. The study also suggests that MIS-C cases tend to have a milder form of the disease. Further research on specific immunological responses in children is recommended to explore the delayed inflammatory syndrome.

Evaluation of response to different COVID-19 vaccines in vaccinated healthcare workers in a single center in Iran

Summary: This study evaluated the antibody response after the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine in healthcare workers. The results showed that Oxford/AstraZeneca and Sputnik V had similar outcomes in inducing high levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike antibodies and neutralizing antibodies, which were higher than Sinopharm and COVAXIN.

Gastrointestinal viral shedding in children with SARS-CoV-2: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the viral shedding pattern in gastrointestinal specimens of children with COVID-19. The pooled prevalence of gastrointestinal SARS-CoV-2 RNA in children with COVID-19 was 86%. After respiratory specimen had become negative, 72% of children had persistent shedding in gastrointestinal specimens. The gastrointestinal RNA had a positive test result for more than 70 days after symptoms onset.

Antimicrobial susceptibility and genotyping of microorganisms isolated from sputum culture of children with cystic fibrosis in an Iranian referral children's hospital

Summary: This study investigated the antibiotic susceptibility pattern and genotyping of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated from sputum samples of children with cystic fibrosis. The results showed a high sensitivity of P. aeruginosa to several antibiotics and a high resistance of S. aureus to penicillin and erythromycin. Genotyping revealed the presence of major clusters in the hospital for both bacteria, suggesting the possibility of transmission within the hospital. This highlights the importance of infection prevention measures.

Evaluation of patients presenting with febrile seizures in an Iranian referral hospital: emphasis on the frequency of meningitis and co-infections

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the differences between the clinical and laboratory features of children infected with VOCs. The study included 87 pediatric cases with confirmed COVID-19, and the variants identified were primarily Alpha, Delta, and Omicron. These variants may manifest different clinical features, and further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to fully understand their clinical manifestations.

Association of body mass index with COVID-19 outcome in a pediatric tertiary referral hospital in Iran

Summary: This study assessed the association between BMI and outcomes of hospitalized pediatric patients with COVID-19 in Iran. The results showed that BMI was not significantly related to COVID-19 outcomes in pediatric cases, but after subgroup analysis, lower BMI in children with underlying comorbidities was independently associated with a poor prognosis of COVID-19.

Microbiological Study of Periodontal Disease in Populations with HIV: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the microbiological characteristics of HIV-infected patients with periodontal disease. A systematic review of 22 articles revealed a higher prevalence of periodontitis in HIV-infected male patients (83%) compared to females (28%). Additionally, more than 140 bacterial species associated with periodontal disease were identified from HIV-infected patients.
