Summary: The removal of zinc ions from water was studied using two types of ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15 and SBA-16). Both materials were modified with APTES and EDTA through post grafting methods. The modified adsorbents were characterized by various analytical techniques, and the structural integrity was maintained. Optimal adsorption conditions and maximum adsorption capacity were determined through experimental tests, and the regenerated adsorbent showed no significant decline in adsorption efficiency.

Summary: The development of composite materials with functional additives proved to be an effective way to improve or supplement the required properties of polymers. In this study, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with different pore sizes were used as functional additives to prepare SBA-15/PF (phenolic resin) nanocomposites. The results revealed that the pore sizes of SBA-15 have a significant effect on the resulting SBA-15/PF hybrid and SBA-15/PF nanocomposites, with enhanced thermal and frictional properties.

Summary: In this study, a melamine-functionalized mesoporous silica-SBA-15 adsorbent was synthesized to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. The adsorbent was prepared through hydrothermal synthesis and post-synthesis modification with 3-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane and melamine. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was studied and characterized using various techniques. The optimal conditions for adsorption were determined, and the results showed that the functionalization of the adsorbent surface increased the adsorption efficiency and capacity. The highest adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) was about 50 mg/g.

Summary: This study investigates the photocatalytic transformation of the antiviral drug abacavir using different advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and assesses their efficiency in removing abacavir in different matrices. The results show that all processes are effective in eliminating abacavir within a short time, but the presence of organic matter or inorganic constituents can hinder the process. The study also identifies major transformation products and their evolution profiles in different matrices, indicating different transformation pathways dominate in each matrix. The toxicity prediction of the major transformation products suggests that only hydroxylation can detoxify the treated solution.

Summary: This study successfully prepared and characterized polylactide/poly(propylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PLA/PPF) and polylactide/poly(butylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PLA/PBF) blends in bulk and fiber forms, and investigated the influence of poly(alkylene furanoate) (PAF) concentration and compatibilization on their physical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Both blends were successfully compatibilized by Joncryl, which improved the interfacial adhesion and reduced the size of PPF and PBF domains. PBF was found to effectively toughen PLA in bulk samples, while PPF showed no significant plasticizing effects. In fiber samples, both PPF and PBF exhibited plasticizing effects, resulting in significantly higher strain at break values compared to neat PLA.

Summary: In this study, PBSu and its bionanocomposites containing different amounts of biochar were prepared to investigate their thermal stability and decomposition mechanism. XPS was used to analyze the surface area of biochar and PBSu/biochar nanocomposites, and it was found that only physical interactions were present between PBSu matrix and biochar nanoadditive. TGA and Py-GC/MS were used to study the thermal stability and decomposition pathway, showing that the addition of biochar slightly reduced the thermal stability of PBSu nanocomposites and affected the decomposition mechanism.

Summary: The binding of drugs to plasma proteins, such as human serum albumin (HSA), is crucial for determining pharmacokinetic parameters. This study investigated the enantioselective binding of S- and R-ketamine to HSA. It was found that ketamine has weak affinity to HSA, with no significant differences in binding behavior between the individual enantiomers and the racemate. The aromatic ring and N-methyl group were identified as the most strongly involved structural moieties in the binding of ketamine to HSA.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between the structure and release properties of solid lipid microparticles (MPs) with different liquid additives. The additives accelerated the conversion of the unstable alpha-form of tristearin to the stable beta-polymorph and caused structural modifications in the MPs. The presence of additives prolonged the drug release in water and resulted in higher release profiles in biorelevant media. The findings suggest that the release behavior can be influenced by the polymorphism and supramolecular-level structural modification of lipid formulations containing crystal modifiers.
