ObjectiveTo investigate the current provision of tobacco education (tobacco use and cessation), assessment and e-cigarette education in UK dental and dental hygiene and therapy (DHT) undergraduate programmes. Materials and MethodsThe study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire sent to all UK institutions training dental and DHT students during the academic year 2015/2016. ResultsTwenty-five programmes returned completed questionnaires (response rate 68%). All programmes (100%) reported delivering tobacco education, delivered by multiple individuals in 78% of the programmes. Assessment of the theoretical and practical aspects of tobacco education was reported in 80% and 72% of the programmes, respectively. More formal teaching time was devoted to the theoretical aspects (100% >2hours) rather than the practical aspects (76% > 2hours) of tobacco education. All programmes expected their graduates to be clinically competent at discussing the health consequences of smoking, deliver a brief smoking cessation intervention, and referring patients to stop smoking services. The use of the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training Very Brief Advice (NCSCT VBA) training package was reported to be mandatory in 36%, and recommended, in 44% of programmes. Specialised stop smoking services delivered teaching in 40% of both dental and DHT training programmes whilst another 40% reported previous input from specialist smoking cessation services but not in 2015/2016. Most programmes reported delivery of teaching on electronic cigarettes, with 12% delivering a standalone lecture on this topic. ConclusionsTobacco education is an important component of dental training. Dental education programmes should remain responsive to a rapidly changing field and fully utilise the available resources.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the efficacy of a commercially available adjunctive phototherapy protocol in treating periodontitis. The results showed that the phototherapy protocol did not provide any additional clinical benefits over root surface debridement alone.

Summary: Novel nicotine products, particularly e-cigarettes, have gained popularity as a potentially less harmful alternative to tobacco smoking, with evidence suggesting their role in smoking cessation. However, concerns about health consequences, particularly in non-smokers and long-term users, have been raised. Studies show distinct microbiome in e-cigarette users, possibly more pathogenic. Limited clinical evidence of oral health effects underscores the need for further research to understand potential harms and benefits of e-cigarette use.

Summary: The study found that electric micromotor handpieces using water coolant alone may produce localized droplet contamination within the treatment bay, but are unlikely to produce aerosol contamination beyond the immediate treatment area, allowing them to be used safely in most open-plan clinic settings.

Oral and periodontal implications of tobacco and nicotine products

Summary: Tobacco use poses significant risks to oral health, with a wide range of adverse effects and increased prevalence of oral diseases among smokers. The emergence of new tobacco and nicotine products, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco, presents additional challenges for dental professionals. Understanding the implications of these products, as well as providing counseling and support for tobacco cessation, is crucial in managing periodontal disease and promoting oral health.

General dental practitioner views on the current and future provision of advanced NHS restorative dentistry services: a cross-sectional survey in England

Summary: This study aims to assess the satisfaction of general dental practitioners in England with the current provision of advanced NHS restorative dentistry services and their views on managed clinical networks (MCNs). The results show that periodontics, endodontics, and tooth surface loss are the most important services, and there is dissatisfaction with the current provision in these areas. The survey also highlights differences in interest and barriers to joining MCNs based on gender and experience.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of dental unit waterline (DUWL) disinfectants on viral dispersion in dental bioaerosols and establishes a dual-tracer system for experiment validation. The results show that DUWL disinfectants reduce the viability of viruses in dental bioaerosols, suggesting their importance for routine infection control and during infectious disease outbreaks.

Smokeless Tobacco Cessation Support in Dental Hospitals in Pakistan: Dentists and Dental Patients' Perspectives on Current Practices, Support Needed, and Opportunities Available

Shaista Rasool, Fiona Dobbie, Fayaz Ahmad, Zohaib Khan, Richard Holliday, Linda Bauld

Summary: This study aimed to understand the influences governing the implementation of smokeless tobacco (ST) cessation support in dental hospitals in Pakistan. Dentists seldom screened ST users and only offered brief advice as cessation support. Barriers identified by dentists included fear, lack of knowledge and skills, lack of privacy, lack of belief in the effectiveness of behavioral support, lack of time and workload pressure, ST use in dentists, lack of referral systems, and absence of a mandatory requirement to offer cessation support. Facilitators included support delivery through junior dentists and longer interactions between dentists and patients. Patients reported receiving negligible cessation support from any healthcare provider.

Electronic cigarettes: an update on products, regulation, public health approaches and oral health

Anthony Weke, Richard Holliday

Summary: Electronic cigarettes are a divisive topic among public health experts and researchers, with debates over whether they could increase smoking rates or be an effective tool for smoking cessation. Dental professionals play a key role in providing evidence-based advice on e-cigarettes, with UK supporting their use for Tobacco Harm Reduction. The potential harms from e-cigarette use are likely to be less than traditional cigarettes, particularly in terms of oral health effects.
