Summary: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and cognitive function, as well as clinical, sociodemographic, and family factors in children with new onset idiopathic epilepsy and healthy controls. The study found that socioeconomic hardship had a significant adverse impact on the cognitive and academic status of children with epilepsy, highlighting the need to consider this factor in understanding the neurobehavioral comorbidities of epilepsy.

Summary: This narrative review explores the therapeutic role of lacosamide in epilepsy-associated comorbidities and highlights the possible pathophysiological mechanisms. Existing evidence suggests the potential efficacy of lacosamide in managing epilepsy and related comorbidities, particularly in alleviating anxiety and depression. However, further larger and higher quality clinical studies are needed to determine the safety and efficacy of lacosamide, as well as its impact on cognitive and behavioral functions in epilepsy patients.

Summary: Cognitive and behavioral comorbidities are common in childhood and adult epilepsy, posing a significant burden on individuals and society. The traditional medical taxonomy approach has been challenged by advancements in neuroimaging, neuropathology, neuropsychology, and network science, leading to the development of a new taxonomy and potential precision medicine strategies for addressing these comorbidities.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential effect of health insurance coverage on racial and ethnic disparities in cancer survival among US children and adolescents. The findings showed that racial/ethnic minorities had a higher risk of death, ranging from 14% to 42%, compared to non-Hispanic Whites, and these disparities varied by health insurance type.

Summary: Since the 1990s, significant progress has been made in the prognosis of childhood and young adolescent cancer in the Netherlands, with notable improvements in survival rates, especially for patients with advanced stages. Although the prognosis for some types of cancer remains modest, the overall mortality rates have been decreasing steadily.

Summary: This study examines the frequency and distribution of comorbidities in individuals with ASD, and explores the potential link between pre- and postnatal exposures and distinct comorbidities. The findings show that the majority of individuals with ASD have at least one comorbidity, and preterm birth and hypoxia at birth are the most common perinatal exposures. These exposures are associated with several distinct comorbidities in both ASD cases and non-ASD siblings.

Summary: People with epilepsy have a higher mortality rate compared to the general population, resulting in a reduced life expectancy of around 12 years. The causes of death vary, but psychiatric comorbidity and modifiable risk factors such as accidents and cardiovascular disorders contribute significantly to the excess mortality. Preventive measures should focus on addressing these factors to reduce epilepsy-related deaths.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence, psychiatric co-morbidity, and annual costs associated with epilepsy in Denmark. The results showed an epilepsy prevalence of 0.67%, with 37.4% of epilepsy patients having a psychiatric disorder or using drugs for psychiatric disorders. Summary: Antiseizure medications (ASMs) are commonly used by pregnant women for various conditions, but there is limited evidence on the cognitive risks of in utero exposure. Healthcare professionals and pregnant women face the challenge of balancing the risks and benefits of different treatments due to the lack of robust safety data. High-quality data on the safety of ASMs used in pregnancy are urgently needed, but randomized clinical trials are not possible in pregnant women. Therefore, evidence must be obtained from observational studies.

Summary: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke are well-known causes of acquired epilepsy, and TBI is also a risk factor for stroke. This study investigated the extent to which the effect of TBI on epilepsy operated through intermediary stroke. The results showed that less than 6% of the risk of epilepsy following TBI is mediated by stroke, but this mechanism becomes more significant with age and for late onset epilepsies.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the registration of phototherapy in the Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR) and the clinical characteristics of neonates treated with phototherapy. The results showed incomplete registration of phototherapy in the DNPR, and varying registration proportions among different hospitals. The highest registration proportion was observed in a university hospital, where phototherapy was inversely associated with gestational age and birth weight, and positively associated with clinical characteristics such as birth asphyxia and infections.

Summary: Phase 2 studies have shown that algorithms using heart rate variability (HRV) can detect focal seizures in patients with autonomic ictal changes. However, wearable electrocardiographic devices using electrode patches may cause skin irritation. This study reports the first use of a subcutaneously implantable cardiac monitor (ICM) for automated seizure detection, showing that it is feasible and accurate in patients with focal seizures and autonomic ictal changes.

The results showed that EEG was rarely used and seldom had treatment consequences in the study period. However, in specific clinical settings, the EEG result could lead to a change in clinical management, highlighting the need for refinement of clinical guidelines to optimize the use of EEG.
