Three fish species (Carassius auratus, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, and Squaliobarbus curriculus) were collected from Xiang River near Changsha City, Southern China. The concentrations of heavy metals including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in the muscle, gill, and liver of three species were determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was introduced to determine the significant variations (p < 0.05) of heavy metals. Livers were found to accumulate Cd and Cu due to the metallothionein proteins. High levels of Mn and Pb in the gills indicated that the main uptake pathway of these heavy metals was from the water. The carnivorous species, P. fulvidraco, was found to accumulate the highest levels of toxic elements (As, Cd, and Pb), while relatively high concentrations of nutrient elements (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) were accumulated in omnivorous species (C. auratus and S. curriculus). According to the results of Pearson's correlation analysis, there were few significant relationships at p < 0.01 level between the concentrations of the analyzed elements and the fish sizes. The results of risk assessment indicated that exposure to the toxic heavy metals from fish muscle consumption posed no non-carcinogenic health risk to local inhabitants.

Bioaccessibility of Cd and its Correlation with Divalent Mineral Nutrients in Locally Grown Rice from Two Provinces in China

Peng Liu, Weiwei Xiao, Kai Wang, Zhaoguang Yang, Lin Wang

Summary: The study focused on examining the concentrations of Cd and three divalent nutrients in locally grown rice grains from Hunan and Guangdong Provinces in China. The research found that there were consistent correlations between Cu, Zn, and Mn concentrations, but a lack of correlation between Cd and Zn in the rice grains. Additionally, the bioaccessibility analysis showed that the bioaccessibility of Cd, Mn, and Zn in the gastrointestinal fractions was significantly lower than that in the gastric fractions.

Summary: The present study investigated the concentrations and patterns of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in seven species of freshwater food products collected from aquaculture farms in Changsha, China. The results showed that these food products contained high levels of OCPs and PCBs, and consumption of these products posed a carcinogenic risk.

Summary: The present study characterized and authenticated Anhua brick tea using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy and chemometric methods. Four primary fluorophores were identified for the first time, and various classifiers were used to process different types and brands of brick tea. Results showed that the combination of full fluorescent data and NPLS-DA achieved the best classification results.

Response of glutathione pools to cadmium stress and the strategy to translocate cadmium from roots to leaves (Daucus carota L.)

Ya Gao, Haipu Li, Yang Song, Fenglin Zhang, Zhaoguang Yang, Ying Yang, Teresa Grohmann

Summary: This study evaluates the tolerance and accumulation capacity of cadmium in carrot leaves and identifies the regulatory factors affecting the distribution of cadmium in carrots. By manipulating certain physiological indicators, the tolerance of carrot leaves to cadmium can be increased. These findings are important for achieving food safety and remediating contaminated soils.

Risk assessment of potential toxic metal pollution in water-sediment-submerged macrophyte systems: a case study of urban shallow lakes in Central China

Changjin Jiang, Ting Zhang, Zhaoguang Yang

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of six potential toxic metals in water-sediment-submerged macrophyte systems in six shallow lakes in Changsha City, Central China. Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara was found to have the highest accumulation of metals, with the highest bioaccumulation factor (BAF) for Zn. The results suggest that native submerged macrophytes, especially V. natans, show potential for removing PTMs from urban shallow lakes.

A comparative study on Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB composites for As(V) removal from water: preparation, characterization and reaction mechanism

Changjin Jiang, Ting Zhang, Shuhui Li, Zhaoguang Yang

Summary: Fe(III)-chitosan and Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB composites were prepared and used for As(V) adsorption. Fe(III)-chitosan-CTAB showed higher adsorption efficiency. The adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherm fitted the Freundlich model. Both electrostatic attraction and surface complexation mechanisms played important roles in the adsorption process.

The Response of Thiols to Cadmium Stress in Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L.)

Ya Gao, Haipu Li, Yang Song, Fenglin Zhang, Zhaoguang Yang

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thiol species on the high cadmium tolerance of spinach and provide information for improving soil utilization. The results showed that as cadmium stress increased, the cadmium concentrations in spinach tissues also increased. Glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs) played important roles in response to cadmium stress. Negative correlations were observed between GSH and cadmium concentrations in roots, as well as between changes in PC3 and concentrations of cadmium in leaves. Thiol production can occur in different tissues of spinach, while the shoots mainly serve as a transport tissue for GSH.

Ionome profiling and arsenic speciation provide evidence of arsenite detoxification in rice by phosphate and arsenite-oxidizing bacteria

Guobing Lin, Xiaoman He, Jiayuan Zeng, Zhaoguang Yang, Lin Wang

Summary: Arsenite (As(III)) is the most toxic and soluble form of arsenic in flooded paddy fields, leading to higher accumulation of arsenic in rice compared to other crops. This study found that inoculating rice plants with As(III)-oxidizing bacteria and supplementing additional phosphate can accelerate the conversion of As(III) to less toxic arsenate (As(V)) and restrict the uptake and translocation of arsenic, thereby mitigating arsenic toxicity to rice plants.

Biotransformation and detoxification mechanism of inorganic arsenic in a freshwater benthic fish Tachysurus fulvidraco with dietborne exposure

Denglong Lu, Wenbao Luo, Haipu Li, Zhaoguang Yang

Summary: This study investigated the bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and detoxification of inorganic arsenic (iAs) in the liver of yellow catfish (Tachysurus fulvidraco) under dietary exposure to two iAs forms (arsenate (AsV) and arsenite (AsIII)). The results showed that both AsV and AsIII significantly accumulated in the fish, and the detoxification of iAs depended on arsenic methylation and the level of antioxidants. Both reduction and oxidation processes of iAs were found, and low toxicity intermediates were identified.
