Organic ultraviolet (UV) filters are used in sunscreens and other personal-care products to protect against harmful effects of exposure to UV solar radiation. Little is known about the fate of UV filters in seawater swimming pools disinfected with chlorine. The present study investigated the occurrence and fate of five commonly used organic UV filters, namely dioxybenzone,, oxybenzone, avobenzone, 2-ethylhexy1-4-methoxycinnamate, and octocrylene, in chlorinated seawater swimming pools. Pool samples were collected to monitor the variation of UV filter concentrations during pool opening hours. Furthermore, laboratory-controlled chlorination experiments were conducted in seawater spiked with UV filters to investigate the reactivity of UV filters. Extracts of chlorination reaction samples were analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry and electron-capture detection to identify the potentially formed byproducts. In the collected pool samples, all the UV filters except dioxybenzone were detected. Chlorination reactions showed that only octocrylene was stable in chlorinated seawater. The four reactive UV filters generated brominated transformation products and disinfection byproducts. This formation of brominated products resulted from reactions between the reactive UV filters and bromine, which is formed rapidly when chlorine is added to seawater. Based on the identified byproducts, the transformation pathways of the reactive UV filters were proposed for the first time. Bromoform was generated by all the reactive UV filters at different yields. Bromal hydrate was also detected as one of the byproducts generated by oxybenzone and dioxybenzone.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of coastal environments on the chemical and microbial properties of litters across the Mediterranean basin. Results showed that coastal conditions had varying impacts on litter aromaticity, microbial diversity, and genetic richness depending on the country and litter type. In addition, the type of litter played a significant role in shaping microbial communities at a large spatial scale.

Summary: A new procedure utilizing a Rhodamine-based fluorescent sensor has been developed to accurately detect Hg2+ ions in water samples. With optimized experimental conditions, including the incorporation of Rhodamine-6G fluorophore and a buffer system with acetic acid at pH 5.25, the sensitivity and selectivity have been significantly enhanced. This procedure has been successfully applied to tap and river waters with good results.

Summary: This study presents a method for the simultaneous determination of multiple pharmaceuticals in environmental water samples using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultra-high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The optimized separation method allowed for detection limits ranging from 2 to 7 ng L-1 and quantification limits between 7 and 23 ng L-1 for the targeted molecules within a three-minute run. The method was validated using samples collected from different surface waters and showed the highest concentrations of pharmaceuticals found in surface water in the Litani river, Lebanon.

Underestimation of Anthropogenic Bromoform Released into the Environment?

Etienne Quivet, Patrick Hohener, Brice Temime-Roussel, Julien Dron, Gautier Revenko, Maxime Verlande, Karine Lebaron, Carine Demelas, Laurent Vassalo, Jean-Luc Boudenne

Summary: Bromoform (CHBr3) is an important precursor of reactive bromine species in the troposphere and stratosphere. Previous models have only considered natural production of CHBr3 from marine organisms, but this study finds significantly higher levels of CHBr3 in water and air due to anthropogenic sources in an industrialized area. These findings suggest that industrial discharges may be an important missing factor in estimates of organic bromine flux to the atmosphere.

Summary: This paper describes the development and application of a multisyringe flow injection analysis system for the fluorimetric determination of the major heat-stable allergen in shrimp, rPen a 1 (tropomyosin). By hydrolyzing tropomyosin in hydrochloric acid medium and quantifying glutamic acid through thermal conversion into pyroglutamic acid, the method provides a rapid and accurate quantification of the major amino acid content.

Summary: Oxidative treatment of seawater is used to control biofouling and minimize the input of harmful or invasive species. However, it also generates disinfection by-products (DBPs), which can be harmful to the marine environment. This article provides an overview of the sources and quantities of DBP inputs, serving as a basis for hazard analysis.

Summary: A new microplate analytical procedure for the determination of nickel ions in natural water samples is described. A fluorescent sensor was synthesized and showed a selective fluorescence quenching effect of nickel ions under optimized conditions. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the mechanism of the fluorescence quenching. The optimized procedure allows for accurate quantification of nickel ions in natural water samples.

Summary: Studies indicate that industrial chlorination discharges are the main cause of TBP accumulation in seawater in the Gulf of Fos, France. The concentrations of TBP in European conger, purple sea urchin, and Mediterranean mussel were higher than published references. Industrial outflows were identified as hotspots for TBP in marine organisms. Although the threat to humans is limited, there is a high environmental risk in the industrial Gulf of Fos, but toxicological references are lacking.

Summary: Disinfecting swimming pool water is crucial for preventing waterborne diseases, although it can lead to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), which can have harmful health effects. This study focuses on the reaction between chlorine and particles released by bathers in swimming pools. Filtered and unfiltered backwash waters from multiple swimming pools were collected and analyzed, and their reactions with varying concentrations of chlorine were examined. The results showed that a significant amount of DBPs, such as chloroform, haloacetic acids (HAAs), and haloacetonitriles (HANs), were generated during the chlorination process, with approximately 50% of them being derived from particles brought by bathers.

Photodegradation of typical Mediterranean plant litters: variations with Quercus species and the leaf-surface exposed

Summary: Photodegradation plays a key role in litter decomposition under climate change, as water scarcity hinders organic matter turnover. A study found that sunlight exposure affects the chemical characteristics of two typical Mediterranean tree species, Quercus ilex and Q. pubescens. Exposure in summer led to a decrease in lignin content through dearomatization and/or dephenolization, and also caused a reduction in alkyl content associated with cutin and waxes. Winter exposure with weaker irradiation resulted in a smaller decrease in lignin content. Overall, photodegradation can enhance litter transformation, depending on suitable climate conditions.

Summary: Managing organic agricultural wastes is a challenge in modern agriculture. The European Union encourages the discovery of cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to utilize such wastes. Organic agricultural waste can be used as a culture medium for fungal strains, producing secondary metabolites like 6-PP with antifungal properties. This study aims to find the optimal formulation for 6-PP production using an experimental admixture design.
