Graphene nanomaterials have many diverse applications, but are considered to be emerging environmental pollutants. Thus, their potential environmental risks and biosafety are receiving increased attention. Bioaccumulation and toxicity evaluations in plants are essential for biosafety assessment. In this study, C-13-stable isotope labeling of the carbon skeleton of graphene oxide (GO) was applied to investigate the bioaccumulation and toxicity of GO in wheat. Bioaccumulation of GO was accurately quantified according to the C-13/C-12 ratio. Wheat seedlings were exposed to C-13-labeled GO at 1.0 mg/mL in nutrient solution for 15 d. C-13-GO accumulated predominantly in the root with a content of 112 mu g/g at day 15, hindered the development and growth of wheat plants, disrupted root structure and cellular ultrastructure, and promoted oxidative stress. The GO that accumulated in the root showed extremely limited translocation to the stem and leaves. During the experimental period, GO was excreted slowly from the root. GO inhibited the germination of wheat seeds at high concentrations (>= 0.4 mg/mL). The mechanism of GO toxicity to wheat may be associated with oxidative stress induced by GO bioaccumulation, reflected by the changes of malondialdehyde concentration, catalase activity, and peroxidase activity. The results demonstrate that 13C labeling is a promising method to investigate environmental impacts and fates of carbon nanomaterials in biological systems.

Hongtao Li, Xiaoqiang Wang, Hongyu Pan, Changming Xiao, Chenglong Wang, Sheng Guo, Longhai Long, Houyin Shi, Hui Chen, Sen Li

Summary: Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is a major cause of low back pain (LBP) and disability in the elderly, resulting in a significant global public health and economic burden. The mechanisms of IDD are complex and the specific targets for reversing IDD remain unclear. Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta), a key mediator of IDD, has been found to regulate IVD cell death through various mechanisms, including apoptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis. Inhibition of IL-1 beta has shown promise as a biological therapy for IDD by inhibiting inflammatory processes and regulating ECM degradation. This article reviews the mechanisms and functions of IL-1 beta in IDD and explores advances in IL-1 beta inhibition as a potential biotherapeutic approach for disc degeneration.

Summary: The key to gene therapy lies in the development of effective and biocompatible delivery systems. This study presents the design of a glutathione-activated aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) cationic amphiphilic lipid, QM-SS-KK, for nonviral gene delivery. QM-SS-KK exhibited efficient DNA compaction and fluorescence modulation properties, which could be activated by GSH. Liposomes composed of QM-SS-KK and DOPE showed high transfection efficiency, especially in the presence of serum, and outperformed the commercial transfection agent PEI25K. These findings highlight the potential of peptide and QM-based AIE lipids for gene delivery.

Summary: In this paper, a scale-relation joint decoupling network (SRJDN) is proposed for the semantic segmentation of remote sensing (RS) images, which considers decoupling scales and decoupling relationships to explore more complete relationships of multiscale RS objects. The SRJDN consists of three steps: scale decoupling (SD), relation decoupling (RD), and fine-granularity guided fusion (FGF). Experimental results on two large-scale fine-resolution RS image datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed joint decoupling strategy and the FGF module in RS image semantic segmentation tasks.
