In this work, the use of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) rainfall data and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for monitoring spatial and temporal drought variabilities in the Upper Sao Francisco River basin is investigated. Thus, the spatiotemporal behavior of droughts and cluster regions with similar behaviors is identified. As a result, the joint analysis of clusters, dendrograms, and the spatial distribution of SPI values proved to be a powerful tool in identifying homogeneous regions. The results showed that the northeast region of the basin has the lowest rainfall indices and the southwest region has the highest rainfall depths, and that the region has well-defined dry and rainy seasons from June to August and November to January, respectively. An analysis of the drought and rain conditions showed that the studied region was homogeneous and well-distributed; however, the quantity of extreme and severe drought events in short-, medium-and long-term analysis was higher than that expected in regions with high rainfall depths, particularly in the south/southwest and southeast areas. Thus, an alternative classification is proposed to characterize the drought, which spatially categorizes the drought type (short-, medium-, and long-term) according to the analyzed drought event type (extreme, severe, moderate, and mild).

Prediction of Drop Relative Energy Dissipation Based on Harris Hawks Optimization Algorithm

Rasoul Daneshfaraz, Celso Augusto Guimaraes Santos, Reza Norouzi, Mahsa H. Kashani, Mohammad AmirRahmani, Shahab S. Band

Summary: This research investigates the efficiency of intelligence methods in predicting relative energy dissipation on an inclined drop with a screen. The results indicate that the hybrid SVM-HHO method performs more precisely than the standalone SVM model in estimating relative energy dissipation on the inclined drop.

Precipitation variability using GPCC data and its relationship with atmospheric teleconnections in Northeast Brazil

Daris Correia dos Santos, Celso Augusto Guimaraes Santos, Reginaldo Moura Brasil Neto, Richarde Marques da Silva, Carlos Antonio Costa dos Santos

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different atmospheric teleconnections on annual precipitation variability in Northeast Brazil based on precipitation data from 1901 to 2013. It analyzes the influence of various teleconnections on total annual precipitation considering the physical characteristics of four subregions. The results show that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) has a significant influence on the Backwoods region, while the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has a greater control over climatic patterns in Northeast Brazil.

A methodological proposal to analyze urban sprawl, negative environmental impacts, and land degradation in the case of Joao Pessoa City (Brazil) between 1991 and 2018

Summary: Urbanization and changes in urban spaces have resulted in severe environmental and social problems in large Brazilian cities. This study proposes a methodology to analyze urban sprawl, negative environmental impacts, and land degradation. The methodology utilizes remote sensing data, environmental modeling techniques, and mixed-method analyses to evaluate impacts from 1991 to 2018. The results indicate conflicts in land use and cover, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and a lack of environmental monitoring. A reduction in arboreal vegetation and high fecal coliform levels were observed, along with various negative environmental impacts. The study area was found to have a medium degree of significance in terms of environmental impacts.

A cloud-integrated GIS for forest cover loss and land use change monitoring using statistical methods and geospatial technology over northern Algeria

Summary: This paper assesses trends in forest cover loss and land use changes in northern Algeria between 2000 and 2020 using datasets extracted from Google Earth Engine. The results showed a significant decrease in forest area and an increase in barren land, with the Constantinois-Seybousse-Mellegue hydrographic basin being the most affected by deforestation. Nonparametric tests indicated increasing trends of forest cover loss in seven river basins. The study emphasizes the alarming situation of forest loss in Algeria and the need for urgent measures to protect forests and the ecological system.

Evaluation of overwash vulnerability and shoreline dynamics in cyclone-prone Sagar Island, Sundarbans (India)

Suman Paul, Manoranjan Mishra, Saswati Pati, Tamoghna Acharyya, Celso Augusto Guimaraes Santos, Richarde Marques da Silva, Rajkumar Guria, F. X. Anjar Tri Laksono

Summary: This study aims to elucidate the overwash vulnerability and shoreline dynamics in Sagar Island, examining the period from 2000 to 2020. The study findings indicate a heightened susceptibility to overwash intrusion, especially in the years following severe cyclonic events. Additionally, there is a strong positive correlation between shoreline recession and climatic variables, confirming the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on both overwash vulnerability and shoreline dynamics.
