Summary: This study systematically investigated the magnetic properties of urban topsoil in Shanghai using the magnetic technique. It found higher magnetic susceptibility in industrial and traffic areas, while lower values in unpolluted and residential/commercial areas. The study also observed a positive correlation between the magnetic susceptibility and the city's GDP, indicating the impact of human activities and economic development on urban soil. These findings further demonstrate the effectiveness of the magnetic technique in evaluating urban soil pollution.

Summary: The study evaluated the status and contamination sources of eight heavy metals in urban soils of district Hyderabad, Pakistan, highlighting the anthropogenic origins of some metals and the natural abundance of others. Spatial variability mapping and geochemical maps showed hotspots of metal contamination from various environmental sources, with potential ecological risks observed in Cd and Pb. The findings can be used for future planning and research activities by government and stakeholders.

Summary: This paper reports on the use of low-cost, energy-efficient magnetic measurements to study pollution in the Lviv agglomeration of Western Ukraine. The study found that soil samples collected near busy roads and railway embankments had high pollution levels, while green spaces had lower pollution levels. The results can be valuable in determining pollution hotspots and levels in the Lviv area.

Summary: The pollution status of environmentally concerned heavy metals in surface soil dusts at the Katima Mulilo urban motor park in Namibia was investigated. Although the concentrations of heavy metals were lower than the WHO's maximum permissible concentrations in soils, there are still potential exposure risks to travelers, especially vulnerable children.

Summary: Gene expression can be modified in people exposed to high concentrations of heavy metals. This study in Chile found that residents living near an industrial complex with high levels of heavy metals in soil had a significantly higher proportion of methylation in the promoter region of the p53 tumor suppressor gene compared to control areas. This is the first study in Chile to consider the association between heavy metal exposure and DNA methylation. The findings suggest the need for further research to support decisions on environmental remediation or prevention of exposure.

Summary: The study conducted an analysis of urban soil characteristics and heavy metal distribution in 18 locations of Ancona, Italy. The concept of Threshold of Attention (ToA) was introduced to identify hot spot soils with high heavy metal pollution, and it was found that the heavy metal content in urban soils did not significantly compromise soil ecological services.

Summary: This article provides an overview of alternative methods for restoring contaminated soils (phytoremediation), focusing on areas of excessive metallurgical activities in Greece. Two case studies in Northern Greece were selected, one characterized by metal mining and a hot summer Mediterranean climate, and the other involving lignite mining and pollution under subtropical climate.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of heavy metals including aluminum, nickel, cadmium, and lead in the soil around the Shiraz cement factory were at moderate to severe levels. The geo-accumulation index indicated non-to-slight pollution of these heavy metals in the region. The results suggest low to medium pollution of heavy metals in the study area.

Summary: The study assessed urban soil pollution by trace elements in China and found that 11% of cities are heavily polluted. Some cities exceed the standardly accepted tolerable levels of risk, with urban green spaces being threatened. It is recommended to alter the policy of urbanization and develop green infrastructures adapted to high contamination levels.
