Summary: Although liver cirrhosis is associated with high mortality, patients usually have a good quality of life in the compensated phase, and the disease may progress undiagnosed for many years. Vibration-controlled transient elastography with controlled attenuation parameter is a useful noninvasive tool to estimate the severity of fibrosis and steatosis. The study aimed to establish the prevalence of significant liver fibrosis diagnosed by vibration-controlled transient elastography in an apparently healthy population.

Summary: This study investigates the prevalence of sarcopenia in the elderly Polish population and its association with obesity and co-existing diseases. The results indicate a higher risk of sarcopenia in elderly women compared to men, which increases with age. The presence of co-existing diseases also increases the risk of sarcopenia in the elderly population.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between sociodemographic and obstetric factors and Body Mass Index (BMI) classifications in pregnant women, and examined the association between BMI classifications and stillbirth and other pregnancy outcomes. The results showed that women who were overweight, obese, or severely obese were more likely to experience adverse pregnancy outcomes such as stillbirth and transfer to neonatal care. National guidelines and individualized care are needed to prevent and reduce negative pregnancy outcomes in overweight or obese women.

Summary: The associations between gestational weight gain (GWG) and adverse birth outcomes are inconclusive. This study examined the associations between maternal GWG and six adverse birth outcomes in a large population. The results showed that pregnant women with GWG below or above guidelines had increased odds of adverse birth outcomes.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment of hemorrhoids during pregnancy in Taiwan using data from a nationwide population-based database. The results showed that women with a history of hemorrhoids or carrying multiple fetuses were at a higher risk of developing hemorrhoids during pregnancy. The most commonly used treatment was topical ointments, and only a small proportion of patients required surgery.

Summary: The study assessed the prevalence and determinants of sarcopenic obesity (SO) and sarcopenia in overweight (SOW) in a general population, finding higher prevalence of SOW and SO in females across all age groups, with age being a significant determinant of both conditions. Subjects over 70 years old accounted for 82.5% and 80.4% of SO and SOW patients, respectively.

Summary: This multicenter, randomized, controlled trial aimed to evaluate the impact of proposing mode of delivery based on ultrasound measurement of lower uterine segment thickness on maternal-fetal mortality and morbidity among pregnant women with previous cesarean delivery. The study results did not show a statistically significant difference in adverse outcomes between the study group and control group, indicating the need for further research due to low statistical power.

Summary: Maternal immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) can cause neonatal thrombocytopenia (nTP) and increase the risk of neonatal hemorrhagic complications. Risk factors such as maternal splenectomy and previous severe nTP have been confirmed, while others like maternal platelet count are still inconclusive. The study identified additional risk factors for severe nTP, such as maternal treatment during pregnancy and low maternal platelet count at delivery.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the fetal and maternal predictive factors for induction of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) fetuses. The study found that successful IUGR induction is mainly influenced by maternal factors. Maternal factors such as low BMI, multiparity, nonscarring uterus, absence of preeclampsia, and normal fetal heart rate before induction were found to be good prognostic factors for successful IUGR induction.

Summary: This study aims to explore whether the occurrence and type of placental lesions vary according to the time of onset of COVID-19 in pregnant women. The results showed that the COVID-19 group had a higher rate of vascular complications, fetal and maternal vascular malperfusion, and signs of inflammation compared to the control group. Moreover, the occurrence of chronic villitis differed between the COVID-19 group that delivered within 14 days after infection and the group that delivered more than 14 days after infection.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the revision of the methodology of the clinical practice guidelines (CPG) of the French National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF). Three specific topics were studied in 2020. The results showed that all CPG groups adhered to the new methodology, but there were heterogeneities in the presentation of arguments, formulation of recommendations, and assessment of evidence. It is suggested to standardize the presentation and provide a guide for critical analysis of literature.
