Purpose: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a polymer that has many potential uses in dentistry. The aim of this review was to summarize the outcome of research conducted on the material for dental applications. In addition, future prospects of PEEK in the field of clinical dentistry have been highlighted. Study selection: An electronic search was carried out via the PubMed (Medline) database using keywords `polyetheretherketone', 'dental', and 'dentistry' in combination. Original research papers published in English language in last fifteen year were considered. The studies relevant to our review were critically analyzed and summarized. Results: PEEK has been explored for a number of applications for clinical dentistry. For example, PEEK dental implants have exhibited lesser stress shielding compared to titanium dental implants due to closer match of mechanical properties of PEEK and bone. PEEK is a promising material for a number of removable and fixed prosthesis. Furthermore, recent studies have focused improving the bioactivity of PEEK implants at the nanoscale. Conclusion: Considering mechanical and physical properties similar to bone, PEEK can be used in many areas of dentistry. Improving the bioactivity of PEEK dental implants without compromising their mechanical properties is a major challenge. Further modifications and improving the material properties may increase its applications in clinical dentistry. (C) 2015 Japan Prosthodontic Society. Published by Elsevier Ireland. Effects of metformin on the bioactivity and osseointegration of dental implants: A systematic review

Vrushank Patel, Muhammad S. Sadiq, Shariq Najeeb, Zohaib Khurshid, Muhammad S. Zafar, Artak Heboyan

Summary: Dental implants are used to support oral functions and aesthetics by surgically placing prosthetic devices in direct contact with the jawbone. Diabetes mellitus can lead to bone loss around implants. Metformin, an anti-diabetic drug with osteogenic properties, is believed to prevent this bone loss. This systematic review aims to summarize and critically appraise the studies on the effects of metformin on dental implants.

Fiber-reinforced composites in dentistry-An insight into adhesion aspects of the material and the restored tooth construct

Aftab Ahmed Khan, Muhammad Sohail Zafar, Muhammad Amber Fareed, Nawaf Abdulrahman AlMufareh, Faisal Alshehri, Hanan AlSunbul, Lippo Lassila, Sufyan Garoushi, Pekka Kalevi Vallittu

Summary: This review aims to provide insights into adhesion aspects within the components of glass fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) and between resin luting material and FRC construction. The study discusses the fundamentals of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) based FRCs and their advantages in creating a solid adhesive interface. It also highlights the importance of interfacial adhesion in achieving successful FRC-based dental restorations.

Summary: Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are smart materials that can change and revert to their permanent shape upon external stimulus. They can be divided into four types based on their permanent shape, elasticity origin, and temporary shape fixing mechanism. Recent developments have shown the wide applicability of SMPs in various biomedical applications. This comprehensive analysis discusses the types, mechanisms, functionalities, and biomedical applications of SMPs, as well as their future advancement in the biomedical field.

Bioactive Glass Applications in Different Periodontal Lesions: A Narrative Review

Muhammad Saad Shaikh, Muhammad Amber Fareed, Muhammad Sohail Zafar

Summary: Tissue engineering in the orofacial region is focused on utilizing immune complexes or other proteins to activate bioactive components and create natural ground materials and tissue components. Bioactive glass, a promising biomaterial, has been found suitable for various clinical dental applications, including regeneration of hard tissues. This review highlights the favorable properties and recent applications of bioactive glass materials for managing periodontal lesions, emphasizing its potential in repairing bone defects, gum recession, and guiding tissue regeneration. However, further research and clinical trials are needed to validate the potential and translate the use of bioactive glass in dental clinics for periodontology.

Calcium Phosphate-Loaded Novel Polypropylene Glycol-Based Dental Resin Composites: Evaluation of In Vitro Bioactivity

Zahra Shafqat, Nadia Munir, Naveed Inayat, Muhammad Adnan Khan, Muhammad Amber Fareed, Muhammad Sohail Zafar

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the bioactivity of novel remineralizing dental composites loaded with calcium phosphate fillers and chlorhexidine. The results showed that the experimental groups containing higher calcium phosphate fillers (CP10 and CP15) exhibited the deposition of calcium phosphate on their surface after 28 days. This indicates that the addition of calcium phosphate fillers enhances the bioactivity of the composites.
