The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two similar high-intensity intermittent exercises (HIIE) but different volume 1.25 km (HIIE1.25) and 2.5 km (HIIE2.5) on inflammatory and BDNF responses. Ten physically active male subjects (age 25.22 +/- 1.74 years, body mass 78.98 +/- 7.31 kg, height 1.78 +/- 0.06 m, VO2peak 59.94 9.38 ml-kg-min(-1)) performed an incremental treadmill exercise test and randomly completed two sessions of HIIE on a treadmill (1:1 min at vVO(2max) with passive recovery). Blood samples were collected at rest, immediately and 60-min after the exercise sessions. Serum was analyzed for glucose, lactate, IL-6, IL-10, and BDNF levels. Blood lactate concentrations was higher immediately post-exercise compared to rest (HIIE1.25: 1.69 0.26-7.78 +/- 2.09 mmol-L-1, and HIIE2.5: 1.89 +/- 0.26-7.38 +/- 2.57 mmol-L-1, p < 0.0001). Glucose concentrations did not present changes under the different conditions, however, levels were higher 60-min post-exercise than at rest only in the HIIE1.25 condition (rest: 76.80 +/- 11.14-97.84 +/- 24.87 mg-dL(-1), p < 0.05). BDNF level increased immediately after exercise in both protocols (HIIE1.25: 9.71 +/- 306-17.86 +/- 8.59 ng.mL(-1), and HIIE2.5: 11.83 +/- 5.82-22.84 +/- 10.30 ng.mL-1). Although both exercises increased IL-6, level percent between rest and immediately after exercise was higher in the HIIE2.5 than HIIE1.25 (30 and 10%; p = 0.014, respectively). Moreover, IL-10 levels percent increase between immediately and 60-min post exercise was higher in HIIE2.5 than HIIE1.25 (37 and 10%; p = 0.012, respectively). In conclusion, both HIIE protocols with the same intensity were effective to increase BDNF and IL-6 levels immediately after exercise while only IL-10 response was related to the durantion of exercise indicanting the importance of this exercise prescription variable.

Summary: This study examined the effects of capsiate supplementation on energy intake, self-reported appetite sensations, and other parameters. Results showed limited impact of capsiate supplementation combined with aerobic exercise on the examined variables, but changes in autonomic nervous system function may have occurred in the absence of exercise.

Summary: The mechanisms underlying immunometabolic disturbances during muscle atrophy are still unknown, and physical exercise has the potential to mitigate and promote muscle recovery. However, there is no consensus on the optimal exercise intensity for improving muscle strength and function.

Summary: This study found that higher levels of perceived occupational physical activity predicted higher levels of disability at 6-month follow-up in patients with chronic low back pain, while other physical activity measures were not associated with pain intensity or disability.

Feeding Pattern, Circadian Rhythm, and Immune Function: What do we know about?

Thiago Barros Estanislau, Karsten Kruger, Jose Cesar Rosa-Neto, Camila S. Padilha, Daniela Caetano Goncalves, Luciele Guerra Minuzzi, Fabio Santos Lira

Summary: Feeding pattern is closely related to health status, and timed eating can promote molecular synchronization and a healthy response. Disorganized feeding patterns may lead to non-synchronization of clock genes and chronic diseases. Time-restricted eating is an effective strategy for promoting health and treating chronic diseases.

Viral load is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and altered monocyte phenotype in acute severe SARS-CoV-2 infection

Pedro R. T. Romao, Paula C. Teixeira, Lucas Schipper, Igor da Silva, Paulo Santana Filho, Luiz Carlos Rodrigues Junior, Alessandra Peres, Simone Goncalves da Fonseca, Marta Chagas Monteiro, Fabio S. Lira, Marco Andrey Cipriani Frade, Juliana Comerlato, Carolina Comerlato, Fernando Hayashi Sant'Anna, Marina Bessel, Celina Monteiro Abreu, Eliana M. Wendland, Gilson P. Dorneles

Summary: Monocytes play a crucial role in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2, and high viral load can contribute to the severity of COVID-19. This study found that COVID-19 patients have altered monocyte phenotype and mitochondrial function, including changes in monocyte subsets, molecule expression, mitochondrial polarization, and reactive oxygen species generation. These findings provide insights into the pathological mechanisms involving viral load, monocyte activation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in severe COVID-19.

Short-Term High-Intensity Circuit Training Does Not Modify Resting Heart Rate Variability in Adults during the COVID-19 Confinement

Patricia C. Garcia-Suarez, Jorge A. Aburto-Corona, Ivan Renteria, Luis M. Gomez-Miranda, Jose Moncada-Jimenez, Fabio Santos Lira, Barbara Moura Antunes, Alberto Jimenez-Maldonado

Summary: This study investigated the impact of short-term high-intensity circuit training on resting heart rate variability in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that 36 sessions of HICT did not induce cardio-vagal adaptations in adults. The exercise protocol did not modify the resting HRV in adults under social isolation elicited by the pandemic.

Exercise training-induced changes in immunometabolic markers in youth badminton athletes

Fabricio Eduardo Rossi, Alberto Jimenez Maldonado, Jason Michael Cholewa, Sergio Luiz Galan Ribeiro, Clara Andressa de Araujo Barros, Caique Figueiredo, Thomas Reichel, Karsten Kruger, Fabio Santos Lira, Luciele Guerra Minuzzi

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the metabolic and inflammatory fluctuations in two seasonal phases of badminton training, and the ability of youth badminton athletes to respond to an inflammatory challenge given by acute exercise on these markers. The results showed a major responsivity of IL-10 and IL-1Ra to a maximal exercise even at the end of an entire season, suggesting a more effective acute inflammatory response in youth badminton athletes.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the impact of environmental enrichment (EE) on oncological factors in experimental studies on various cancer models. The findings demonstrate that different EE protocols effectively reduce tumor growth and development in terms of angiogenesis, volume, weight, and the number of mice with tumors. Additionally, EE enhances the rate of tumor inhibition. These findings emphasize the importance of EE as a valuable tool in cancer management.
