We found microRNA-133b (miR-133b) was downregulated in urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) tissues, and it could inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis in UCB cells. Consequently, we intend to explore the clinical significance of miR-133b in UCB patients. Expression of miR-133b in 146 UCB specimens and matched adjacent non-neoplastic bladder tissues were measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The overall survival (OS) curve and progression-free survival (PFS) curve were plotted using the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic factors for OS and PFS were identified by univariate and multivariate analyses using the Cox proportional hazards regression model. The expression of miR-133b was significantly downregulated in UCB tissues compared with those in adjacent non-neoplastic bladder tissues (P<0.001). Among UCB patients, low expression of miR-133b significantly correlated with aggressive clinicopathological features. Multivariate analysis indicated that the expression of miR-133b was the independent prognostic factors for predicting PFS (RR: 2.97; 95% CI: 1.78-6.44; P=0.009) and OS (RR: 4.23; 95% CI: 1.51-11.8; P=0.011) in patients with UCB. Our study demonstrated that downregulation of miR-133b associated with aggressive clinicopathological features and predicted unfavorable prognosis in patients with UCB, might serve as feasible biomarker for clinical outcome of UCB patients after surgery and potential therapeutic target in the future.

Summary: This study developed a pharmaceutical vesicle RHL/Cl-Ch-cal that showed promising effects in combating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. Through a combination of cholesterol-PEG, calcitriol, and clarithromycin, RHL/Cl-Ch-cal effectively disrupted the architecture of H. pylori biofilms, killed dispersed bacteria, and inhibited bacterial re-adhesion. Moreover, it activated the host immune response and killed intracellular H. pylori. The study provides a comprehensive attack strategy for H. pylori therapies.

Summary: Preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with postoperative oncological outcomes in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients treated with radical nephroureterectomy (RNU), and this association is affected by sex. Female patients have lower eGFR and worse oncological outcomes.

Label-free based proteomics revealed the specific changes of muscle proteins in pike eel (Muraenesox cinereus) under cold stress

Pengxiang Yuan, Xiaonan Chen, Soottawat Benjakul, Jipeng Sun, Bin Zhang

Summary: Chemical and proteomics analysis revealed significant changes in muscle tissues of pike eel during chilling and frozen storage, with a decrease in springiness and myofibrillar protein content. Cold stress induced alterations in muscle proteins, affecting membrane structural constituents, cytoskeleton, and binding functional proteins. The identified differentially abundant proteins were mainly associated with cytoskeleton function, impacting the physical structure and chemical performances of muscle tissues under cold conditions.

Summary: This study evaluated the accumulation of somatic mutations in Musa basjoo, a wild relative of banana, and found a higher mutation rate compared to other plants. Interestingly, these mutations were shared among different tissues, suggesting they arise early in development and are derived from a few stem cells.

Chinese dragon's blood ethyl acetate extract suppresses gastric cancer progression through induction of apoptosis and autophagy mediated by activation of MAPK and downregulation of the mTOR-Beclin1 signalling cascade

Lishan Ouyang, Jiaqi Li, Xiaonan Chen, Huiming Huang, Yingying Tian, Xingxing Li, Daoran Pang, Xuejiao Wei, Jinxin Xie, Longyan Wang, Dongxiao Liu, Pengfei Tu, Jun Li, Zhongdong Hu

Summary: Chinese dragon's blood ethyl acetate extract (CDBEE) has demonstrated anti-gastric cancer effects by suppressing proliferation and metastasis, inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition, inducing apoptotic and autophagic cell death, and showing no obvious toxicity or side effects. Therefore, CDBEE may be a promising candidate drug for the treatment of gastric cancer.

Liquid biopsy at the frontier in renal cell carcinoma: recent analysis of techniques and clinical application

Mingyang Li, Lei Li, Jianyi Zheng, Zeyu Li, Shijie Li, Kefeng Wang, Xiaonan Chen

Summary: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a common type of kidney cancer with unremarkable symptoms in early stages and low sensitivity to radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Liquid biopsy, an emerging non-invasive test, can measure patient biomarkers for diagnosis, prognostic assessment, treatment monitoring, and response evaluation. With rapid development and iteration of extraction and analysis technologies, liquid biopsy has become a low cost, high efficiency, and high accuracy clinical detection method. In this review, we comprehensively discuss the components, clinical applications, limitations, and future prospects of liquid biopsy in the past 5 years.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between kidney stone history and human bone health. Results showed a negative correlation between lumbar bone mineral density and kidney stone history, and an interaction between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and lumbar BMD regarding kidney stone formation. Therefore, maintaining high lumbar BMD and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels may help prevent the occurrence of kidney stones.

Blood-based liquid biopsy: insights into early detection, prediction, and treatment monitoring of bladder cancer

Shijie Li, Kerong Xin, Shen Pan, Yang Wang, Jianyi Zheng, Zeyu Li, Xuefeng Liu, Bitian Liu, Zhenqun Xu, Xiaonan Chen

Summary: Bladder cancer is a global clinical challenge characterized by late presentation, poor prognosis, and low survival rates. Traditional methods for diagnosis and monitoring, such as cystoscopy and tissue biopsy, have limitations and high costs. In recent years, liquid biopsies, specifically blood-based ones, have emerged as highly efficient methods for discovering biomarkers and monitoring tumor progression. Several liquid biopsy biomarkers have shown promising results in clinical applications, including early detection, residual disease detection, recurrence prediction, and therapy response.
