Most genetically modified crops are engineered for herbicide tolerance, among them, glyphosate tolerant crops have the greatest share. Glyphosate is one of the most extensively used herbicides worldwide. The popularity of glyphosate stems from its low cost, low environmental impact, and effectiveness while being safe for animals. The toxicity of glyphosate to untargeted organisms was studied using goldfish (Carassius auratus) after exposure to different concentrations of glyphosate isopropylamine salt, a glyphosate based herbicide for 96 hours. Tissues of brain, kidney and liver were collected and subjected to NMR-based metabolomics analysis and histopathological inspection. Plasma was collected and the hematological parameters of glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CRE) were quantified. Glyphosate produced an increase in the hematological parameters of BUN and CRE and dose-dependent injuries. Metabolomics analysis revealed significant perturbations in neurotransmitter equilibrium, energy metabolism and amino acid metabolism in glyphosate dosed fish, which are associated with the toxicity of glyphosate. The results highlight the vulnerability of glutaminergic neurons to glyphosate and enlighten the potential of glutamine as an early marker of glyphosate induced neurotoxicity.

Investigating Ion Transport through Artificial Transmembrane Channels Containing Introverted Groups

Ya-Wei Li, Yong-Hong Fu, Jun-Li Hou

Summary: The study showed that the ion transport rate decreased with elongation of the introverted sidechains, and the channel with propyl group as the introverted sidechain exhibited the longest opening duration time. It also revealed that, compared to the ion transport rate, the opening duration is a more important factor for determining the transport activity of the artificial channels.

Jie Yang, Hao Fu, Yuyang He, Zehui Gu, Yonghong Fu, Jinghu Ji, Yanhu Zhang, Yun Zhou

Summary: This study investigates the friction and wear performance of a novel volcano-shaped textured PVD coating and explores the influence mechanism of volcano-shaped texture on the tribological behavior of the coated surface. The results show that a volcano-shaped texture with suitable diameters and area ratios can lower friction coefficient and reduce adhesive wear, while a texture with larger area ratios increases friction. This texture shows potential for friction control.

Study on the Influence of Capillary Force and Thermal Capillary Force on Surface Bulge Morphology by Laser Micro-Melting

Xiping Yang, Yonghong Fu, Jinghu Ji, Xin Kuang

Summary: The study establishes a laser micro-melting model, taking into account the effects of boundary heat transfer, recoil pressure, surface tension, capillary force, and thermal capillary force on micro-flow. It reveals that the height variation of the morphology bulge is mainly caused by recoil pressure and capillary force. It shows that in the heating stage, molten metal flow is dominated by capillary force and thermal capillary force, while in the cooling stage, the capillary force is the main driving force for metal flow, gradually converging from both sides to the middle.

Summary: The Lower Permian Shanxi Formation in the Eastern Ordos Basin is a key target for shale gas exploration in China. This study used comprehensive methods to investigate the lithofacies and pore structure of the shale. The results showed that there are five different lithofacies types, with lithofacies V and lithofacies VI being the best in terms of pore morphology, connectivity, and development degree. Organic pore morphology was found to be closely related to the type of kerogen present, with sapropelinite contributing to better development of organic pores.

Micro-dimple and micro-bulge textures:Influence of surface topography types on stick-slip behavior under starved lubrication

Yuyang He, Jie Yang, Hao Wang, Zehui Gu, Yonghong Fu

Summary: The influence of different surface topography types on stick-slip behavior was investigated. Micro-dimple textures inhibit stick-slip behavior by trapping wear debris and forming effective oil film, while micro-bulge textures reduce contact area and thus decrease the propensity of stick-slip behavior.

Effect of laser bump texture combination characteristics on friction-wear properties of roll surface

Xiping Yang, Yonghong Fu, Jinghu Ji

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of surface bump texture combination characteristics on friction-wear properties. It introduces six groups of different texture combinations and their processing methods. The results show that the friction coefficient is lower on surfaces with random distribution textures than regular textures. The wear resistance of textured surfaces is significantly higher due to the higher microhardness of the textured area.

Tetrahydroxy Stilbene Glucoside Alleviates Ischemic Stroke by Regulating Conformation-Dependent Intracellular Distribution of PKM2 for M2 Macrophage Polarization

Minghui Li, Wei Lu, Yuanyuan Meng, Wenjie Zhang, Fengge Wang, Li Sun, Yuekang Xu

Summary: This study found that tetrahydroxy stilbene glucoside (TSG) can improve the phenotypes of ischemic stroke in mice by regulating the polarization of macrophages. TSG downregulates the transcriptional levels of M1 marker genes while upregulating the M2 marker genes, leading to an increased percentage of infiltrated M2 macrophages in the brain. The mechanism behind this involves the regulation of the metabolic enzyme pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2).

Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) QSAR combination prediction model establishment and structural characteristics interpretation

Lu Zhang, Min Li, Dalong Zhang, Shujing Zhang, Li Zhang, Xiaojun Wang, Zhiyong Qian

Summary: With the increasing incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders, it is important to screen and evaluate developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) compounds from a large number of environmental chemicals and understand their mechanisms. This study conducted a DNT qualitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study for the first time, and preliminarily illustrated the structural characterization of DNT compounds. Multiple models and methods were used to construct prediction models, resulting in the best model with good predictive ability. By combining different models, both MCC values and application domain values were improved. Additionally, through modeling descriptors analysis and structure alerts (SAs) identification, electronical properties, van der Waals volume-related properties, and S, Cl or P containing substructure were found to be associated with DNT. This study lays a foundation for further DNT prediction of environmental exposures in human and contributes to the understanding of DNT mechanism.
