Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the expression and prognostic value of Bcl-2 protein in patients with head and neck cancer. The results showed that overexpression of Bcl-2 protein was associated with worse lymph node metastasis, overall survival, and disease-free survival. However, this conclusion may not be reliable due to the divergences between original studies and the high risk of bias.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between the development of moderate or greater depression and overall survival in patients with stages II-IV head and neck cancer. The results showed no significant association between the development of depression and overall survival. Prophylactic antidepressant medication may be beneficial in preventing clinically significant depression and improving quality of life outcomes.

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the associations of perioperative opioid use with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with resectable head and neck cancer (HNC). The results suggest that high intraoperative opioid requirement may decrease OS in oral cancer surgery, weak but statistically significant inverse relationships were found between increased intraoperative opioid requirements and DFS and OS in treating laryngeal cancer, and chronic opioid use after resection of oral cavity cancer was associated with decreased DFS.

Summary: The study found that patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) experience stigma, anxiety, and depression, with a significant correlation between them. Stressors can also impact the level of stigma in these patients. Proper identification of comorbidities and reducing stigma should be recommended in mental health efforts for HNC patients.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the diagnostic capabilities of biological markers in the plasma, serum, tissue, and saliva of patients with head and neck cancer. The results showed that combined biomarkers had higher diagnostic accuracy compared to individual biomarkers, but further studies are needed to validate these findings.

Summary: This systematic review examines telemedicine-based interventions for head and neck cancer patients and finds that this model has the potential for cost-effectiveness and clinical utility in rehabilitation. However, the current literature on this topic is limited and more research is needed to determine its role in management.

Summary: Detailed analyses of B cells in the tumor microenvironment of HPV-linked head and neck cancers reveal strong humoral immune responses to HPV antigens and the secretion of HPV-specific antibodies in situ. The findings suggest that tumor-infiltrating B cells could potentially be utilized for the development of therapeutic agents in human cancer.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the prognostic role of pre- and post-surgery factors in patients undergoing salvage surgery for recurrent head and neck cancer. The results showed that older age (>60 years), advanced initial stage, early recurrence, and regional recurrence were significantly associated with worse overall survival. Post-surgery factors such as positive surgical margins, extracapsular extension, and perineural invasion were also predictors of worse prognosis.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that pretreatment depression or depressive symptoms may indicate worse overall survival in patients with head and neck cancer. The pooled analysis demonstrated a statistically significant effect, although the results were limited by mild heterogeneity.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in reducing physiological and functional impairments related to swallowing and improving adherence and related factors among head and neck cancer survivors. The results showed that home-based telerehabilitation improved the safety of swallowing and oral feeding, nutritional status, and swallowing-related quality of life, and reduced negative emotions, while also enhancing adherence and satisfaction. Factors influencing the efficacy of telerehabilitation were also identified.

Summary: Studies have identified various factors associated with psychological distress in couples facing Head and Neck Cancer, including disease burden, reduced social contact, perception of reduced relationship quality, and less adaptive coping. While the effect sizes varied considerably, overall the studies had good methodological quality but could be improved by minimizing non-response bias and fully reporting relational characteristics.

Summary: Malnutrition is common among head and neck cancer patients and can lead to reduced treatment response and increased side effects. Supplementation with immunonutrient-enriched formulas during radiotherapy and chemotherapy may improve or maintain nutrition status, while supplementation with glutamine may delay the onset of oral mucositis and reduce severe cases. Further research is needed to determine optimal timing, dosage, and duration of immunonutrition.

Summary: This retrospective case-control study compared the proportions of collapse, obstruction, or mixed instances on drug-induced sleep endoscopy findings between obese and nonobese children with obstructive sleep disordered breathing. The results showed that obese children exhibited significantly more pharyngeal collapses than nonobese children. This finding suggests that the predominance of hypopharyngeal collapse in obese children may contribute to the failure of surgery directed at obstructive findings.
