Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, recurrent, chronic inflammatory skin disease that is a cause of considerable economic and social burden. Its prevalence varies substantially among different countries with an incidence rate proclaimed to reach up to 20% of children in developed countries and continues to escalate in developing nations. This increased rate of incidence has changed the focus of research on AD toward epidemiology, prevention, and treatment. The effects of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of AD remain elusive. However, evidence from different research groups show that probiotics could have positive effect on AD treatment, if any, that depend on multiple factors, such as specific probiotic strains, time of administration (onset time), duration of exposure, and dosage. However, till date we still lack strong evidence to advocate the use of probiotics in the treatment of AD, and questions remain to be answered considering its clinical use in future. Based on updated information, the processes that facilitate the development of AD and the topic of the administration of probiotics are addressed in this review.

K-Means Clustering Based High Order Weighted Probabilistic Fuzzy Time Series Forecasting Method

Krishna Kumar Gupta, Sanjay Kumar

Summary: In this study, a novel high-order weighted fuzzy time series (FTS) forecasting method is proposed. The method utilizes k-mean clustering, weighted fuzzy logical relations, and probabilistic fuzzy set (PFS) to handle the occurrence of recurrence of fuzzy logical relations and uncertainties in assigning membership grades. The proposed method uses Gaussian probability distribution function to assign probabilities to membership grades and demonstrates its superiority in forecasting SBI share price and University of Alabama enrollments.

Gastric Cancer and Viruses: A Fine Line between Friend or Foe

Ahmad Firoz, Hani Mohammed Ali, Suriya Rehman, Irfan A. Rather

Summary: Gastric cancer is a global health concern with a significant number of cases. Early diagnosis and treatment improve survival rates, but advanced stage tumors have lower survival rates. Oncolytic viruses show promise as more efficient diagnostic and treatment strategies. Oncogenic viruses play a significant role in gastric cancer progression.

Z-Guggulsterone Is a Potential Lead Molecule of Dawa-ul-Kurkum against Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Meenakshi Gupta, Shaikh Maryam Ghufran, Tasneem Kausar, Rafat Ali, Subhrajit Biswas, Shahid M. Nayeem, Romana Ishrat, Sher Ali, Ajaz Ahmad, Irfan A. Rather, Maryam Sarwat

Summary: The study suggests that Z-guggulsterone, a compound found in an ancient saffron-based polyherbal formulation, Dawa-ul-Kurkum, may be the main active constituent responsible for its potential anticancer effects against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The research utilized molecular docking, in vitro screenings, and molecular dynamics simulation studies to identify the binding interactions and evaluate the therapeutic potential of Z-guggulsterone. These findings highlight the importance of considering Z-guggulsterone as a promising phytoconstituent in the treatment of HCC.

Triazole Derivatives Target 14α-Demethylase (LDM) Enzyme in Candida albicans Causing Ergosterol Biosynthesis Inhibition

Irfan A. Rather, Jamal S. M. Sabir, Amer H. Asseri, Mohmmad Younus Wani, Aijaz Ahmad

Summary: Candida albicans is a common cause of fungal infections in humans and azoles are commonly used for treatment. However, their overuse has led to drug resistance. In this study, new triazole-based molecules were developed and tested against Candida albicans. In vitro and in silico results showed that these derivatives have the potential to be effective antifungal drugs, as they effectively bind to the target enzyme, inhibit ergosterol production, and prevent biofilm formation.

Reversal of Azole Resistance in Candida albicans by Human Neutrophil Peptide

Mohammad Imran Khan, Hani Choudhry, Sadaf Jahan, Irfan A. A. Rather

Summary: With the increasing prevalence of multi-drug-resistant fungal infections, especially in developing countries, the development of new strategies and drugs to overcome drug resistance in fungal pathogens is crucial. This study investigated the potential of human neutrophil peptide (HNP) as a treatment for Candida infections. Results showed that HNP alone and in combination with fluconazole (FLC) exhibited antifungal activity against both susceptible and resistant C. albicans isolates. Furthermore, HNP inhibited biofilm formation and the activity of drug efflux pumps and their genes. These findings suggest that HNP could be used as a monotherapy or in combination with FLC to treat azole-resistant C. albicans.
