Traditionally, microbial surveys investigating the effect of chronic anthropogenic pressure such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminations consider just the alpha and beta diversity and ignore the interactions among the different taxa forming the microbial community. Here, we investigated the ecological relationships between the three domains of life (i.e., Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya) using 454 pyrosequencing on the 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes from chronically impacted and pristine sediments, along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lion, Vermillion coast, Corsica, Bizerte lagoon and Lebanon) and the French Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay and English Channel). Our approach provided a robust ecological framework for the partition of the taxa abundance distribution into 859 core Operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 6629 satellite OTUs. OTUs forming the core microbial community showed the highest sensitivity to changes in environmental and contaminant variations, with salinity, latitude, temperature, particle size distribution, total organic carbon (TOC) and PAH concentrations as main drivers of community assembly. The core communities were dominated by Gammaproteobacteria and Deltaproteobacteria for Bacteria, by Thaumarchaeota, Bathyarchaeota and Thermoplasmata for Archaea and Metazoa and Dinoflagellata for Eukarya. In order to find associations among microorganisms, we generated a co-occurrence network in which PAHs were found to impact significantly the potential predator prey relationship in one microbial consortium composed of ciliates and Actinobacteria. Comparison of network topological properties between contaminated and non-contaminated samples showed substantial differences in the network structure and indicated a higher vulnerability to environmental perturbations in the contaminated sediments.

Comprehensive evaluation of metal(loid)s pollution risk and microbial activity characteristics in non-ferrous metal smelting contaminated site

Hao Li, Jun Yao, Ning Min, Zhihui Chen, Miaomiao Li, Wancheng Pang, Bang Liu, Ying Cao, Dongyang Men, Robert Duran

Summary: Large amounts of metal(loid)s released from abandoned non-ferrous metal smelting sites pose serious environmental risks. This study proposes a weighted comprehensive pollution risk score (CRS) to evaluate the pollution and environmental risk of metal(loid)s, combining two evaluation methods for metal(loid)s pollution and risk index, as well as two microbial activity evaluation methods. The results reveal the metal(loid)s with higher and lower risks in contaminated surface soil, and suggest that microbial activity can serve as a potential indicator of pollution. The study provides useful information for the management and remediation of metal(loid)s polluted sites.

Summary: Although tunas represent a significant part of the global fish economy and a major nutritional resource worldwide, their microbiome remains poorly documented. This study analyzed the taxonomic composition of bacterial communities in the gut, skin, and liver of two widely consumed tuna species. The results showed that the composition of the tuna microbiome was independent of fish sex, but varied according to tuna species and sampling site. The study also discovered a unique and diverse bacterial assemblage in the tuna liver, including potential histamine-producing bacteria.

Summary: Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were synthesized using Aloe barbadensis and Glycine max aqueous extracts as a reducing agent. The study found that Glycine max PdNPs exhibited better stability than Aloe barbadensis PdNPs, and both types of plant extract-based PdNPs showed similar antioxidant, catalytic, and antimicrobial properties to chemically synthesized PdNPs.

Microbial community metabolic alterations and resistance to metals and antibiotics driven by chronic exposition to multiple pollutants in a highly impacted tropical coastal bay

Vanessa Almeida Moreira, Cristiana Cravo-Laureau, Angelo Cezar Borges de Carvalho, Alice Baldy, Edison Dausacker Bidone, Elisamara Sabadini-Santos, Robert Duran

Summary: Microbial communities in Sepetiba Bay were found to be correlated with metallic contamination and the QR index. Functional analysis revealed different functional patterns in the internal and external sectors of SB. The relative proportions of KEGG pathways and genes associated with metallic homeostasis showed significant differences according to the SB sectors. Additionally, there was a strong correlation between metal resistance genes and antibiotic resistance genes, indicating co-selection by metallic contamination in SB.

Summary: This study assessed the changes in microbial communities in sediments from Sepetiba Bay in Brazil. The results showed significant differences in microbial diversity between less polluted and highly polluted sectors. The study also validated the use of the Quality Ratio index as a reliable tool for assessing chronic contamination in the bay.

Keystone microbial taxa organize micropollutant-related modules shaping the microbial community structure in estuarine sediments

Sandrine Veloso, David Amouroux, Laurent Lanceleur, Christine Cagnon, Mathilde Monperrus, Jonathan Deborde, Cristiana Cravo Laureau, Robert Duran

Summary: The fluctuation of environmental conditions in estuaries drives the structure of microbial communities, which play a key role in ecosystem functioning. In this study, the microbial communities in the Adour Estuary were investigated using gene sequencing and chemical analysis. The results showed a strong seasonal organization and spatial distribution of microbial communities, influenced by biogeochemical parameters and micropollutants. Network analysis revealed specific modules linked to pollutant types, providing important insights into estuarine microbial ecology.

Summary: The presence of marine snails poses a potential threat to the survival of Acropora coral species in Phu Quoc Islands, leading to changes in coral reef health and bacterial diversity. The composition of bacterial communities associated with Acropora formosa and Acropora millepora was studied using Illumina sequencing technology. The analysis revealed the presence of diverse bacterial genera, with significant differences in relative abundances between grazed and healthy coral samples.

Safe reuse of wastewater: Effect of disinfection methods on microbial community

Boxi Wang, Robert Duran, Thierry Pigot, Cristiana Cravo-Laureau

Summary: Performic acid (PFA), a new generation of disinfectant, has shown remarkable performance for wastewater treatment. However, its effect on wastewater microbial community and the differences compared to commonly used disinfectants is poorly documented. This study provides an overview of the effects of PFA, chlorine, and UV on microbial diversity and structure in wastewater. The results show that PFA is more effective at inactivating pathogen microorganisms and has the potential for safe wastewater reuse.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of human activity on 18 high-altitude Pyrenean lakes located on both sides of the France-Spain frontier. Sediment cores were collected in summer 2013 and analyzed for the concentration of 24 elements. The results showed that geographical position and lithogenic features influenced the trapping of pollutants in each lake basin. The majority of the lakes exhibited enrichment factor values above 2 for at least one element, indicating historical anthropogenic inputs. The data also highlighted the natural origin of some elements and the significant contribution of mining activities as the main historical source of pollution.

Cold sediment microbial community shifts in response to crude oil water-accommodated fraction with or without dispersant: a microcosm study

Tamer Hafez, Maren Ortiz-Zarragoitia, Christine Cagnon, Cristiana Cravo-Laureau, Robert Duran

Summary: In this study, the effects of hydrocarbon water-accommodated fraction (WAF) prepared with and without dispersant on benthic microbial communities were investigated. It was found that the contaminated sediment showed less taxa responsive to the addition of both WAF and WAF + dispersant, indicating the presence of hydrocarbon-degrading and dispersant-resistant taxa in the contaminated sediment.
