Summary: This study assessed the zinc nutritional status in patients with coronary artery disease using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The results showed no association between zinc and the severity of coronary artery disease, and there were no significant differences in zinc levels between patients with acute coronary syndrome and stable coronary artery disease. However, a significant negative correlation was observed between zinc content and serum triglyceride concentration, and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus had lower hair zinc content.

Summary: This study investigated the predicting value of the Coronary Artery Tree description and Lesion EvaluaTion (CatLet) angiographic scoring system in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. The results showed that the residual CatLet (rCatLet) score can predict clinical outcomes for AMI patients, and the incorporation of clinical variables into the rCatLet score enhances its predicting ability.

Summary: This study evaluated the capacity of a genetic risk score (GRS) to assess the risk of recurrence in patients with first myocardial infarction, independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The results showed that the GRS was associated with a higher risk of recurrence and improved the prediction ability to identify high-risk patients who could benefit from intensive preventive strategies.

Summary: Several cohort studies have shown that the Japanese diet is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease mortality, but the results are inconsistent and most studies were conducted in the 1990s. To further investigate this association, this study examined 802 patients undergoing coronary angiography and found that the intake of fish, soy products, vegetables, seaweed, fruits, and green tea was lower in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), especially those with myocardial infarction (MI), compared to those without CAD. The Japanese diet score was significantly lower in CAD patients and the proportion of CAD and MI decreased with higher Japanese diet scores.

Summary: A new analysis of large biobanks reveals genetic variants associated with changes in medication for cardiometabolic diseases and presents polygenic scores of medication-use behavior. The study used data from the Finnish nationwide drug purchase registry and performed genome-wide association analyses to identify loci associated with medication use in hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. The findings demonstrate the potential for medication-based strategies to identify cardiometabolic risk loci and provide genome-wide tools for preventing cardiovascular diseases.

Summary: This study compares the long-term angina pectoris relief of successful versus failed percutaneous coronary intervention of chronic total occlusions (CTO PCI). The results show that successful CTO PCI is associated with better long-term relief of symptoms of angina pectoris compared to failed CTO PCI. The all-cause death rate did not differ between the groups.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of statin use on survival and cardiovascular mortality in patients with LEAD of different severity depicted by the ABI level. The results showed that statin use improved overall survival and amputation free survival regardless of ABI level. Statin use was also associated with lower mortality from cerebrovascular disease, overall mortality, and cardiovascular mortality in patients with ABI<0.9 or >1.3.

Summary: This nationwide cohort evaluated the long-term outcome of transcatheter-closed ASDs. The study found that patients who underwent transcatheter closure of ASD are at higher risk of new-onset atrial fibrillation and migraine, as well as comorbidities such as ischemic heart disease, ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia, and AV conduction disorder. Major complications after the closure, including erosion and device embolization, are rare.

Summary: Transcatheter intervention (TCI) has emerged as an alternative to surgery for Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) and has a procedural success rate of 88%. TCI for CoA reduces the duration of hypertension, but patients may still require continuous antihypertensive treatment. Additionally, a portion of patients may need aortic and/or aortic valve surgery during follow-up.

Summary: This review discusses the relationship between cholesterol metabolism and the risk reduction of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs). It focuses on the potential mechanisms of high cholesterol absorption and its association with ASCVDs. Loss-of-function genetic variations in ABCG5, ABCG8, and NPC1L1 have been found to affect cholesterol absorption and are associated with the risk of ASCVDs. Combination therapy of statin with cholesterol absorption inhibition is necessary for individuals with high cholesterol absorption to reduce ASCVD risk.

Summary: Amiodarone treatment leads to the accumulation of desmosterol and zymostenol in myocardium, which may contribute to the therapeutic and adverse effects of the drug. Summary: This study examines the relationship between testosterone levels and human health. The analysis of genetic and health registry data reveals that while testosterone levels are associated with various health characteristics, the causality of these associations is debated. The study shows that testosterone levels are intricately tied to metabolic health but lack of evidence for causality is found in most associations. However, genetically predicted testosterone levels do affect many sex-specific traits.

Summary: This study investigates the systemic metabolic signatures of oral diseases and finds associations between current or past infectious/inflammatory oral diseases and circulating metabolites. Periodontitis, in particular, is associated with metabolic profiles typical for inflammation, suggesting that oral diseases may represent a modifiable risk factor for systemic chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic disorders.
