Summary: A series of amphiphilic copolymers (PIDs) were synthesized by copolymerization of isobutyl acrylate (IBA) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA). The structure, composition, and molecular weights of these copolymers were characterized. The solubility and aggregation behavior of these copolymers in different solvents were studied. The demulsification experiment showed that PID demulsifiers had excellent efficiency for super heavy oil emulsions. The morphology and activity changes during demulsification proved the role of lipophilic segments in accelerating water droplet condensation.

Summary: In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose (Walocel) and methyl cellulose-E5 were found to be more effective for deionized water-in-crude oil demulsification. The presence of ions slowed down the demulsification of Methocel-E5 more than that of Walocel, likely due to the different hydrogen bond strength and van der Waals interactions with water molecules. The polar 2-hydroxypropyl substitutes in Methocel E5 resulted in much less effective saline demulsification compared to Walocel.

Summary: The separation of water and oil from water-in-oil emulsion is crucial for its transportation and refining. Ionic liquids and their derivatives have been studied as effective agents for breaking emulsions. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose grafted with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (MCC@IM-ILs) was synthesized and evaluated as eco-friendly surface-active agents for water separation from crude oil. The structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed through various characterization techniques. MCC@IM-ILs showed acceptable dehydration efficiency to demulsify different water-in-oil emulsions. The concentration, alkyl chain length, and counter-anion of MCC@IM-ILs played a key role in the separation process.

Summary: In this study, a novel polymer nanoparticle PBM@PDM was synthesized and used as a demulsifier for stable water-in-oil (W/O) or oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. PBM@PDM could immediately induce coalescence of water droplets and effectively release water in W/O emulsion. It also successfully destabilized O/W emulsion stabilized by asphaltenes.

Summary: This study synthesized biochar based on sapropel and investigated the effects of chemical modification on its textural characteristics, acid-base properties, and adsorption properties. The results showed that the chemical modification increased the fraction of micropores, specific surface area, and changed the surface properties of biochar. The experiment also revealed that biochar pretreated with alkali exhibited the maximum adsorption capacity for copper ions. A conceptual model identifying the mechanisms of copper adsorption on sapropel-based biosorbent was proposed.

Summary: The corrosion inhibitory potency of two new pyrimidine-pyrazole derivatives, PPA and PPC, was evaluated for mild steel in 1 M HCl. The results showed enhanced inhibition activities with increased concentration, reaching maximal values of 91.15% and 92.39% for PPA and PPC, respectively. However, the mitigation potency decreased with increasing temperature. SEM and XPS analysis revealed that PPA and PPC adsorbed on the mild steel surface, forming a shielding layer that prevented the dissolution of the steel in the acidic solution.

Summary: This study aims to develop a nano-biofungicide comprising of volatile essential oil molecules to enhance its efficacy in the field of agriculture through easily scalable green synthesis technique. The nano biofungicide was prepared through one pot hot melt ultrasonication technique with easy water dispersibility and long term stability. The physico-chemical analysis revealed that, nano bio-fungicides were amorphous sphere-shaped nanoparticles with low melting point. The encapsulation efficiency of major components of essential oil was determined, and it was found that they followed Higuchi model of release kinetics. The essential oil loaded nanostructured lipid carrier showed significantly higher mycelial growth inhibition compared to pure essential oil, indicating enhanced bio-efficacy.
