Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis as an oxidative stress parameter, using a newly proposed method, in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Methods: In total, 97 participants were included in the study. Among them, 51 had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and the remaining 46 were healthy individuals. Total thiol (-SH+-S-S-) levels and native thiol (-SH) levels in serum of each participant were measured. The amount of dynamic disulphide bonds (-S-S-) and (-S-S-) x 100/(-SH), (-S-S-) x 100/(-SH + -S-S-), and -SH x 100/(-SH + -S-S-) ratios were calculated from these values. The obtained data were used to compare Alzheimer's disease patients with healthy individuals. Results: The average total thiol and native thiol levels of patient with Alzheimer's disease in the study were found to be significantly lower than those levels of healthy individuals. In addition, in the patient group, the -S-S-x 100/-S-S+-SH ratio was found to be significantly higher, whereas the -SH x 100/-S-S+-SH ratio was found to be significantly lower compared with healthy individuals. Total thiol and native thiol levels, dynamic disulphide bond amount, and -S-S-x 100/-SH, -S-S-x 100/-S-S+-SH, and -SH x 100/-S-S+-SH ratios were not found to be correlated with mini mental state examination score or duration of disease. Conclusion: Recent studies have shown that oxidative stress is the one of the molecular changes underlying the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we have investigated the dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis in patients with Alzheimer's disease, using a novel method.

Evaluation of Fetal Serum Thiol/Disulfide Homeostasis and Ischemia-Modified Albumin Levels in Fetal Distress

Seyit Ahmet Erol, Atakan Tanacan, Orhan Altinboga, Filiz Halici Ozturk, Burcin Salman Ozgu, Yasemin Tasci, Salim Neselioglu, Ozcan Erel, Dilek Sahin

Summary: This study found that fetal distress is associated with a shift in thiol-disulfide homeostasis towards oxidation and an increase in ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels, which could be a reliable indicator of non-acute ischemic conditions.

Dynamic thiol disulfide homeostasis in painters as indices of oxidative stress

Osman Gokhan Ozakinci, Meside Gunduzoz, Murat Buyuksekerci, Mevlut Karatas, Ahmet Rifat Balik, Salim Neselioglu, Ozcan Erel

Summary: This study used a novel and automated colorimetric measurement method to determine thiol-disulfide homeostasis as indices of oxidative stress in painters. The results showed that the levels of disulfide/native thiol and disulfide/total thiol were significantly higher in painters with longer duration of work. There was a positive correlation between urinary phenol and thiol-disulfide homeostasis, ischemia-modified albumin levels, disulfide levels, and duration of work. The newly developed automated colorimetric method proposed in this study can be a promising and practical test for evaluating the oxidative status of painters.

Dynamic thiol-disulphide homeostasis and ischemia modified albumin levels in neonatal calf diarrhea

Summary: The study investigates the TDH parameters and IMA levels in calves with neonatal diarrhea compared to healthy controls. The results show that calves with neonatal diarrhea have significantly decreased levels of native thiol and total thiol compared to healthy controls. The study also finds that IMA levels are increased in calves with neonatal diarrhea due to oxidative stress.

Evaluation of Oxidative Stress by Dynamic Thiol/Disulfide Homeostasis and Ischemia-Modified Albumin Levels in Children with β-Thalassemia Major

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the oxidant/antioxidant balance in individuals with beta-thalassemia major (beta-TM) and healthy children, and found that thiol/disulfide homeostasis was weakened in beta-TM patients. The study also revealed that the oxidant imbalance worsened when beta-TM patients did not receive regular chelation therapy.

Evaluation of thiol/disulfide homeostasis in rheumatoid arthritis and disease activity

Yunus H. Polat, Sukran Erten, Ahmet Kor, Ismail Dogan, Yuksel Maras, Orhan Kucuksahin, Guniz Y. Ustuner, Ozcan Erel

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the thiol/disulfide balance in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared to healthy controls, and to examine its relationship with Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28). The results showed that RA patients had lower thiol levels and higher disulfide levels compared to controls. Additionally, the group in remission had higher thiol levels and lower disulfide levels compared to other DAS28 groups. These findings suggest that the antioxidant defense system is impaired in RA patients, leading to oxidative stress and imbalance.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between cognitive impairment and oxidative stress biomarkers TDH and IMA in multiple sclerosis patients. The results showed that plasma native thiol and total thiol levels were significantly decreased in patients with SPMS. The study also found significant correlations between TDH, BICAMS scores, clinical indices of disease severity, and MRI parameters.

Summary: The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between obesity, Vitamin-D deficiency, and protein oxidation. The results showed that obese children had lower vitamin-D levels than pre-obese and normal-weight children. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis was negatively affected by low vitamin D levels, pubertal period, and high triglyceride levels.

Evaluation of Dysfunctional HDL by Myeloperoxidase/Paraoxonase Ratio in Unexplained Infertility Patients Undergoing IVF/ICSI

Kadriye Erdogan, Nazli Tunca Sanlier, Emine Utlu Ozen, Sueleyman Erol, Inci Kahyaoglu, Salim Neselioglu, Ozcan Erel, Serra Akar, Yaprak Engin Ustun

Summary: This study evaluates the role of oxidative stress in unexplained infertility (UEI) by assessing dysfunctional high-density lipoprotein (HDL) through the myeloperoxidase (MPO) and paraoxonase (PON) ratio. The results show that patients with UEI have higher total dosages of gonadotropin, lower number of Grade 1 embryos and quality of blastocysts, and higher serum MPO/PON ratio. Serum MPO/PON ratio can significantly predict the duration of infertility.

Summary: This study found significant differences in levels of thiol-disulphide parameters, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and C-reactive protein (CRP) between bipolar disorder (BD) patients in acute mania and early remission compared to healthy controls. Additionally, during the manic phase, markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII), platelet-to-albumin ratio (PAR), and CRP levels were significantly higher. These findings highlight the importance of inflammation in bipolar disorder.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate oxidative contributors of atherosclerotic risk factors in patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The results showed significantly elevated oxidative markers in AUD patients and decreased antioxidant capacity. Atherosclerotic markers were also higher and correlated with alcohol intake. Thus, oxidative markers may serve as indicators for atherosclerotic risk and therapeutic interventions targeting oxidative load may help prevent clinical manifestation of atherosclerotic diseases.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between thiol, the main component of the antioxidant system, and coronary collateral circulation (CCC). The results showed that patients with stable coronary artery disease (sCAD) who developed poor CCC had lower levels of native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide compared to those with good CCC. Additionally, DM, total thiol, and disulfide were identified as independent predictors of poor CCC.
