Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) may have potential applications in regenerative medicine for the treatment of chronic liver diseases (CLDs). Human menstrual blood is a novel source of MSCs, termed menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs). Compared with bone marrow MSCs, MenSCs exhibit a higher proliferation rate and they can be obtained through a simple, safe, painless procedure without ethical concerns. Although the therapeutic efficacy of MenSCs has been explored in some diseases, their effects on liver fibrosis are still unclear. In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic effects of MenSC transplantation in a carbon tetrachloride-induced mouse model of liver fibrosis. These results revealed that MenSCs markedly improved liver function, attenuated collagen deposition, and inhibited activated hepatic stellate cells up to 2 weeks after transplantation. Moreover, tracking of green fluorescent protein-expressing MenSCs demonstrated that transplanted cells migrated to the sites of injury, but few differentiated into functional hepatocyte-like cells. Transwell coculturing experiments also showed that MenSCs suppressed proliferation of LX-2 cells (an immortalized hepatic stellate cell line) through secretion of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, interleukin-6, hepatocyte growth factor, growth-related oncogene, interleukin-8, and osteoprotegerin. Collectively, our results provided preliminary evidence for the antifibrotic capacity of MenSCs in liver fibrosis and suggested that these cells may be an alternative therapeutic approach for the treatment of CLDs.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T-cell therapy in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC): current status and future perspectives

Jingjing Qu, Quanhui Mei, Lijun Chen, Jianying Zhou

Summary: The development of genetically engineered T cells, especially CAR-T cells, has shown great promise in basic and clinical cancer studies, particularly in the treatment of NSCLC. However, challenges such as lack of tumor-specific antigens, immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, low infiltration levels of CAR-T cells into tumor tissue, and tumor antigen escape still need to be addressed. Optimizing CAR-T-cell design for NSCLC is urgently needed to overcome on-target/off-tumor toxicities and increase efficacy.

Small extracellular vesicles from menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) as a novel therapeutic impetus in regenerative medicine

Lijun Chen, Jingjing Qu, Quanhui Mei, Xin Chen, Yangxin Fang, Lu Chen, Yifei Li, Charlie Xiang

Summary: Menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) show promising therapeutic effects in regenerative medicine. The study of MenSC-derived small extracellular vesicles (EVs) is still in early stages but has potential in treating various diseases. Continued research is needed to further understand and harness the therapeutic potential of MenSC EVs.

Responses of nitrification and bacterial community in three size aggregates of paddy soil to both of initial fertility and biochar addition

Qiong Hou, Ting Zuo, Jian Wang, Shan Huang, Xiaojun Wang, Longren Yao, Wuzhong Ni

Summary: The addition of biochar can enhance the nitrification process in soil by increasing the diversity and activity of nitrifying bacteria, especially in fertile soils or small macroaggregates. Biochar addition alters the structure of soil microbial communities, thereby regulating the nitrification process.

Mesenchymal stem cell-based treatments for COVID-19: status and future perspectives for clinical applications

Lijun Chen, Jingjing Qu, Farhin Shaheed Kalyani, Qi Zhang, Lingzhi Fan, Yangxin Fang, Yifei Li, Charlie Xiang

Summary: This review discusses the origins, pathogenesis, and clinical features of COVID-19, as well as the potential uses of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in treating patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Preliminary data from ongoing clinical trials are promising, but long-term safety evaluations and larger trials are needed for more conclusive judgments regarding MSC-based therapies.

A review of objective assessments for hyperactivity in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Xiu-Qin Wang, Princess Jane Albitos, Yong-Fu Hao, Hang Zhang, Li-Xia Yuan, Yu-Feng Zang

Summary: Hyperactivity is one of the core symptoms of ADHD, but objective assessments for hyperactivity are seldom used compared to measures of inattention and impulsivity. Actigraph and QbTest are two devices that can be used to objectively measure hyperactivity, but they have limitations in distinguishing ADHD from other disorders or different types of ADHD.

The Location Reliability of the Resting-State fMRI FC of Emotional Regions Towards rTMS Therapy

Na Zhao, Juan Yue, Zi-Jian Feng, Yang Qiao, Qiu Ge, Li-Xia Yuan, Jue Wang, Yu-Tao Xiang, Yu-Feng Zang

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the reliability of RS-fMRI FC location and the impact of various factors on FC strength. The results showed low to moderate reliability of FC strength, while the center of gravity (COG) of seed-based FC had smaller distances, suggesting it as a potential stimulation target.

Gray Matter Network Associated With Attention in Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Xing-Ke Wang, Xiu-Qin Wang, Xue Yang, Li-Xia Yuan

Summary: This study used a multivariate method, SSM-PCA, to analyze sMRI and identified a GM network associated with attention in children with ADHD. The study found that this network is different from that in adolescents and adults with ADHD. The expression of the ADHD-related pattern was also found to be correlated with inattention symptoms. The study also explored the influence of sample size on the analysis.

Disrupted network integration and segregation involving the default mode network in autism spectrum disorder

Bo Yang, Min Wang, Weiran Zhou, Xiuqin Wang, Shuaiyu Chen, Marc N. Potenza, Li-Xia Yuan, Guang-Heng Dong

Summary: Changes in the brain's default mode network (DMN) are closely related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with ASD subjects showing higher participation coefficient (PC) of the DMN than healthy controls (HCs). This difference is due to lower intra-module connections within the DMN and higher inter-network connections between the DMN and other networks. The findings were consistent across different age groups and subtypes of ASD.

Edge-centric functional network analyses reveal disrupted network configuration in autism spectrum disorder

Bo Yang, Min Wang, Weiran Zhou, Xiuqin Wang, Shuaiyu Chen, Li-Xia Yuan, Guang-Heng Dong

Summary: Neuroscientific evidence suggests that the pathological symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) involve networks of the brain on a larger spatial scale. Analyzing edge-edge interactions can provide important insights on the organization and function of complex systems. Using resting-state fMRI data, this study compares brain connectivity in 238 ASD patients and 311 healthy controls, finding abnormalities in key brain regions and functional connections that may be related to disturbances in the reward system and functional network features in ASD.
