Pistacia lentiscus (Anacardiaceae; mastic tree) is an evergreen sclerophyll species, largely distributed in dry areas of the Mediterranean basin and well-adapted to severe conditions of drought in very unfertile soils. In the present study, we evaluated the growing responses of two accessions of P. lentiscus to three different levels of salinity under nursery conditions. The two mastic tree accessions (Manfredonia and Specchia) were collected from individual trees in two different sites in the Apulia region (Southern Italy) and subjected to three different levels of salinization by adding 0, 400, and 800 g of salts 100 L-1 of substrate, respectively. The following parameters were recorded: plant height; survival of plants and total root length; total biomass; number of leaves per plant and leaf area; as well as various ecophysiological traits. Salinity reduced the values of all the examined parameters, both morphological and physiological. Results suggested that P. lentiscus can tolerate and accumulate salt at high concentrations in nursery conditions. As a result, it is important to identify germplasm that is highly tolerant to salinity for the production of nursery seedlings that will be planted in saline soils.

Electromagnetic Induction Measurements for Investigating Soil Salinization Caused by Saline Reclaimed Water

Lorenzo De Carlo, Gaetano Alessandro Vivaldi, Maria Clementina Caputo

Summary: This paper focuses on using electromagnetic induction measurements to investigate soil salinization caused by irrigation with saline reclaimed water. The study demonstrates that electromagnetic induction measurements can efficiently map large areas of soil salinity and update real-time soil salinity maps, playing a significant role in preventing soil salinization risks.

Treated Unconventional Waters Combined with Different Irrigation Strategies Affect 1H NMR Metabolic Profile of a Monovarietal Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Federica Angile, Gaetano Alessandro Vivaldi, Chiara Roberta Girelli, Laura Del Coco, Gabriele Caponio, Giuseppe Lopriore, Francesco Paolo Fanizzi, Salvatore Camposeo

Summary: The agricultural sector is facing a global decrease in water supply and water quality, especially in the Mediterranean olive growing areas. This study used NMR Spectroscopy and multivariate data analysis to evaluate the metabolic profiling of oils produced under different irrigation schemes. The results showed that using a deficit irrigation strategy combined with saline reclaimed water source can increase the content of both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs).

Image Analysis of Adventitious Root Quality in Wild Sage and Glossy Abelia Cuttings after Application of Different Indole-3-Butyric Acid Concentrations

Danilo Loconsole, Giuseppe Cristiano, Barbara De Lucia

Summary: The aim of this study was to optimize stem cutting propagation protocols for wild sage and glossy abelia autumn, and assess the effects of different IBA concentrations and cultivars on adventitious root (AR) quality using image analysis. The results showed that the IBA concentration is an important factor determining AR quality in both taxa, and the sensitivity to IBA dosage varies among species and their cultivars.

Appraising water and nutrient recovery for perennial crops irrigated with reclaimed water in Mediterranean areas through an index-based approach

Gaetano Alessandro Vivaldi, Daniele Zaccaria, Salvatore Camposeo, Francesco Pasanisi, Francisco Pedrero Salcedo, Ivan Portoghese

Summary: This study investigates a quantitative approach and indices for the evaluation of water and nutrient recovery potential from irrigation with reclaimed water. The findings show that irrigation with reclaimed water can reduce the dependence on conventional water sources and provide significant environmental and agronomic benefits for agricultural production.

Use of remote sensing to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on soil salinity in a semi-arid area

Francisco Pedrero Salcedo, Pedro Perez Cutillas, Juan Jose Alarcon Cabanero, Alessandro Gaetano Vivaldi

Summary: The global water crisis, driven by water scarcity and water quality deterioration, is expected to continue and intensify in dry and overpopulated areas, and will play a critical role in meeting future agricultural demands. This study focuses on the influence of environmental factors on soil salinity and its effect on irrigated agriculture using degraded water. The findings suggest that remote sensing techniques and environmental data can be used to detect and monitor soil salinity in citrus trees. Incorporating other variables related to agricultural management practices will improve soil salinity predictive models.

Available PAR, Growth and Yield of a Super High-Density Almond Orchard Are Influenced by Different Row Orientations

Francesco Maldera, Vincenzo Carone, Ignasi Iglesias Castellarnau, Gaetano Alessandro Vivaldi, Salvatore Camposeo

Summary: A research conducted in an irrigated super high-density almond orchard in Italy found that the east-west row orientation had negative effects on leaf area index, canopy growth, yield, fruit quality, and yield efficiencies, especially in the second year. In contrast, the north-south row orientation allowed for better distribution of photosynthetic active radiation in the canopy. These findings provide a scientific basis for improving the management of super high-density orchards.

Land Suitability Analysis of Six Fruit Tree Species Immune/Resistant to Xylella fastidiosa as Alternative Crops in Infected Olive-Growing Areas

Salem Alhajj Ali, Gaetano Alessandro Vivaldi, Simone Pietro Garofalo, Leonardo Costanza, Salvatore Camposeo

Summary: Olive agro-ecosystems in southern Italy have suffered severe damage from Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp). Replacing Xfp-infected olive-growing areas with economically viable fruit tree species is seen as a practical control measure. A land suitability analysis was conducted, using climate and soil data, to evaluate the suitability of almond, fig, hazelnut, kiwifruit, pistachio, and pomegranate as Xfp immune/resistant fruit trees. The results showed that most of the proposed fruit tree crops are suitable for plantation in the Xfp-infected olive-growing areas, with varying suitability levels depending on climate and soil conditions.
