We discuss two aspects of the plasmofluidic assembly of plasmonic nanostructures at the metal-fluid interface. First, we experimentally show how three and four spot evanescent-wave excitation can lead to unconventional assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles at the metal-fluid interface. We observed that the pattern of assembly was mainly governed by the plasmon interference pattern at the metal-fluid interface, and further led to interesting dynamic effects within the assembly. The interference patterns were corroborated by 3D finite-difference time-domain simulations. Secondly, we show how anisotropic geometry, such as Ag nanowires, can be assembled and aligned in unstructured and structured plasmofluidic fields. We found that by structuring the metal-film, Ag nanowires can be aligned at the metal-fluid interface with a single evanescent-wave excitation, thus highlighting the prospect of assembling plasmonic circuits in a fluid. An interesting aspect of our method is that we obtain the assembly at locations away from the excitation points, thus leading to remote assembly of nanostructures. The results discussed herein may have implications in realizing a platform for reconfigurable plasmonic metamaterials, and a test-bed to understand the effect of plasmon interference on assembly of nanostructures in fluids.

Mid-infrared-perturbed molecular vibrational signatures in plasmonic nanocavities

Rohit Chikkaraddy, Angelos Xomalis, Lukas A. Jakob, Jeremy J. Baumberg

Summary: Recent advancements in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have allowed real-time observation of single-bond vibrations at room temperature, surpassing the slow detection limitations of mid-infrared (MIR) vibrational spectroscopy. A new method using SERS for MIR sensing has been developed, utilizing nanoparticle-on-foil (NPoF) nanocavities to modulate molecular SERS signals in the presence of MIR photons. Observations indicate that phonon resonances of SiO2 can trap intense MIR surface plasmons, offering new possibilities for optomechanics and detection limits down to single-photon and single-molecule regimes.

Summary: Plasmonic nanoantennas can focus light at nanometer length scales, resulting in intense field enhancements. The tightest optical confinements achieved in plasmonic gaps depend on the gap spacing, refractive index, and facet width, making antenna shape tuning challenging. However, by controlling the surrounding refractive index, efficient frequency tuning and enhanced in-/output coupling can be achieved through retardation matching, enabling dark modes to become optically active and improving various functionalities.

Amplified Plasmonic Forces from DNA Origami-Scaffolded Single Dyes in Nanogaps

Sara Rocchetti, Alexander Ohmann, Rohit Chikkaraddy, Gyeongwon Kang, Ulrich F. Keyser, Jeremy J. Baumberg

Summary: Developing highly enhanced plasmonic nanocavities allows direct observation of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. With DNA origami, precise nanopositioning of single-quantum emitters in ultranarrow plasmonic gaps enables detailed study of their modified light emission. By developing nanoparticle-on-mirror constructs with DNA nanostructures as reliable and customizable spacers for nanoparticle binding, it is revealed that the traditional understanding of Purcell-enhanced molecular dye emission is misleading, and the enhanced dipolar dye polarizability greatly amplifies optical forces acting on the facet Au atoms, causing their rapid destabilization. Different dyes exhibit emission spectra dominated by inelastic (Raman) scattering rather than fluorescence, challenging the conventional theories in the field of quantum optics using plasmonics.

Angle-resolved polarimetry of hybrid perovskite emission for photonic technologies

Bibek S. S. Dhami, Vasudevan Iyer, Aniket Pant, Ravi P. N. Tripathi, Ethan J. J. Taylor, Benjamin J. J. Lawrie, Kannatassen Appavoo

Summary: Coupling between light and matter is influenced by the polarization of the electromagnetic field and the nature of excitations in a material. Hybrid perovskites are seen as a promising material for light-based technologies, but understanding how the microstructure affects the intrinsic properties of photon emission is crucial. This study used angle-resolved cathodoluminescence microscopy to examine the polarization state of photons emitted from large-grain hybrid perovskite films, revealing the impact of grain boundaries on polarization and emission angle. This research is important for the development of perovskite-based flat optics where the effects of grain boundaries and interfaces need to be minimized.
