The collapse of the Fundao tailings dam at Mariana (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil) started a huge human tragedy and likely the most serious environmental disaster in recent Brazilian history. The dam had contained waste from processing iron ore from mines owned by Samarco, a joint venture company of the Brazilian Vale S.A. and the Anglo-Australian BHP Billiton Ltd. Following ineffective attempts to contain the disaster, after 16 days the mud flood reached the sea, where its impact is expected to affect thousands of marine fauna and flora species. Here, we provide an example of one of these species, the cnidarian Kishinouyea corbini Larson 1980 (Staurozoa), emblematic because it is extremely rare, poorly studied, and its known distribution overlaps the threatened area on the Brazilian coast. Based on this case, we discuss the need for efforts to monitor and minimize the possible impacts of this socio-environmental crime, as well as to identify and punish all responsible players in this tragedy, including negligent licensing and supervisory state agencies, in order to prevent future similar tragedies.

Box Jellyfish (Cnidaria, Cubozoa) Extract Increases Neuron's Connection: A Possible Neuroprotector Effect

Gian Lucas M. Arruda, Hugo Vigerelli, Michelle C. Bufalo, Giovanna B. Longato, Rodinei V. Veloso, Vanessa O. Zambelli, Gisele Picolo, Yara Cury, Andre C. Morandini, Antonio Carlos Marques, Juliana Mozer Sciani

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases are a major cause of death globally, with no effective treatment identified so far. The extract from box jellyfish Chiropsalmus quadrumanus has been shown to increase neurite outgrowth length and branching junctions, selectively affecting neurons while not impacting other cell types. Mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of low molecular mass compounds and peptides in the extract, which play a role in improving neuronal connections.

Summary: Investigations on the internal anatomy of stalked jellyfishes (Staurozoa) are crucial for species descriptions and systematic studies. Micro-CT technology allows for detailed analysis of anatomical details and revealed stage-specific differences in the morphology of Staurozoa.

Recruitment of toxin-like proteins with ancestral venom function supports endoparasitic lifestyles of Myxozoa

Ashlie Hartigan, Adrian Jaimes-Becerra, Beth Okamura, Liam B. Doonan, Malcolm Ward, Antonio C. Marques, Paul F. Long

Summary: Cnidarians, the oldest lineage of venomous animals, use nematocysts to discharge toxins. The recruitment of venom toxins to support parasitic lifestyles in Endocnidozoa is unknown. Research on transcriptomic, proteomic, and phylogenetic analysis suggests that myxozoans express and translate venom toxin homologs inherited from ancestral cnidarians, but with reduced venom diversity possibly due to smaller genome sizes. Further investigation is needed to determine the expression of myxozoan venom candidates in transmission stages.

Biodiversity and biogeography of hydroids across marine ecoregions and provinces of southern South America and Antarctica

Summary: This study utilized benthic communities of hydroids as a model to investigate the biodiversity-biogeographic connections between southern South America and Antarctica, identifying hotspots of rich biodiversity at risk of depletion and critical regions susceptible to loss of diversity. The analysis revealed a more stratified and complex biogeographic structure, with the Magellan area and Scotia Arc showing transitional characteristics.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between genetic, morphological, and environmental variability within three benthic marine hydroid species. The results showed contrasting patterns of genetic and phenotypic divergence, suggesting the existence of cryptic speciation and plasticity in different species.

Caspase-1 and Cathepsin B Inhibitors from Marine Invertebrates, Aiming at a Reduction in Neuroinflammation

Summary: Neuroinflammation, a condition associated with dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, can be caused by an inflammatory response to amyloid peptides. This study identified new caspase-1 and cathepsin B inhibitors from Brazilian marine invertebrates. The extract of the box jellyfish Chiropsalmus quadrumanus was found to inhibit caspase-1, and trigonelline was identified as the active molecule. Additionally, betaine from Exaiptasia diaphana was shown to inhibit cathepsin B. These new prototypes may provide potential targets for enzyme inhibition and control of neuroinflammation.

Trait-environment relationships of hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) across large spatial and environmental gradients in the Atlantic Ocean

Marina Oliveira Fernandez, Adrian Jaimes-Becerra, Antonio Carlos Marques

Summary: The aim of this study was to test trait-environment relationships in hydroids across large spatial and environmental gradients and to evaluate associations between traits, environmental variables, space, and phylogeny. The results showed significant correlations between hydroid traits and environmental variables as well as geographical space, and a correlation between hydroid phylogeny and the environment and geographical space. Multiple environmental variables combined affect the distribution of hydroid traits, which are also influenced by spatial and historical factors. This study provides an overview of how hydroids are distributed across environments according to their traits and reveals the spatial and phylogenetic components of these trait-environment relationships.

Summary: Data collection by citizen scientists on online platforms like iNaturalist has become an important practice for biodiversity detection and big data compilation. However, validating species identification remains a central concern for scientific use of such data. This study compared marine species lists from iNaturalist and scientific collections, revealing potential taxonomic biases in iNaturalist. The study also showed the significant contribution of an iNaturalist citizen science campaign in Brazil to marine biodiversity records, highlighting the importance of taxonomist engagement for accurate species identification.

Reproductive and environmental traits explain the variation in egg size among Medusozoa (Cnidaria)

Jimena Garcia-Rodriguez, Amanda Ferreira Cunha, Adriana Morales-Guerrero, Adrian Gonzalez-Chaves, Agustin Camacho, Lucilia Souza Miranda, Filipe C. Serrano, Adrian Jaimes-Becerra, Antonio Carlos Marques

Summary: Medusozoans exhibit diverse life cycles, with different semaphoronts representing the sexual phase. Our comprehensive review found that egg size, although phylogenetically conserved within medusa classes, is influenced by reproductive and environmental traits such as the number of eggs, depth, and temperature. Additionally, egg size variation among cold-water species of Staurozoa may be related to the development of small benthic larvae in this group.
