Extremely high fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration has become synonymous to Beijing, the capital of China, posing critical challenges to its sustainable development and leading to major public health concerns. In order to formulate mitigation measures and policies, knowledge on PM2.5 variation patterns should be obtained. While previous studies are limited either because of availability of data, or because of problematic a priori assumptions that PM2.5 concentration follows subjective seasonal, monthly, or weekly patterns, our study aims to reveal the data on a daily basis through visualization rather than imposing subjective periodic patterns upon the data. To achieve this, we conduct two time-series cluster analyses on full-year PM2.5 data in Beijing in 2014, and provide an innovative calendar visualization of PM2.5 measurements throughout the year. Insights from the analysis on temporal variation of PM2.5 concentration show that there are three diurnal patterns and no weekly patterns; seasonal patterns exist but they do not follow a strict temporal division. These findings advance current understanding on temporal patterns in PM2.5 data and offer a different perspective which can help with policy formulation on PM2.5 mitigation.

Source-receptor relationship of transboundary particulate matter pollution between China, South Korea and Japan: Approaches, current understanding and limitations

Jianzheng Liu, Jiawei Li, Fei Yao

Summary: Transboundary particulate matter (PM) pollution in Northeast Asia has attracted significant attention in China, South Korea, and Japan. Studies on the source-receptor relationship (SRR) indicate that China is a major contributor to PM pollution in South Korea and Japan, but the exact contribution remains debated. Factors influencing China's contributions to receptor countries include analysis periods, analytical approaches, data quality, and international collaboration. Challenges in current SRR studies include data quality issues, limited modeling scales, and narrow perspectives on environmental responsibility allocation.

Does air pollution contribute to urban-rural disparity in male lung cancer diseases in China?

Huagui Guo, Weifeng Li, Jiansheng Wu, Hung Chak Ho

Summary: The study found that PM2.5 air pollution significantly mediated the association between urban-rural division and the incidence rate of male lung cancer, accounting for approximately 29.80% of the difference in incidence rates. This suggests that exposure to PM2.5 may be a potential factor contributing to the urban-rural disparity in male lung cancer diseases in China.

A Framework for Characterizing the Multilateral and Directional Interaction Relationships Between PM Pollution at City Scale: A Case Study of 29 Cities in East China, South Korea and Japan

Jianzheng Liu, Hung Chak Ho

Summary: This study proposes a statistical analysis framework to explore the directional interaction relationships between particulate matter (PM) pollution in cities. By analyzing PM2.5 pollution data from 29 cities in East China, South Korea, and Japan, the study reveals significant multilateral and directional interaction relationships. The framework provides a quick and consistent alternative to traditional models and chemical composition analysis.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the outcomes and risks of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures in Chinese patients. The results showed that patients with a high risk of stroke and moderate to high risk of bleeding who underwent LAAO implantation in Chinese centers had high rates of procedural success and low rates of short-term ischemic and bleeding events.

Summary: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common and clinically heterogeneous genetic heart disease. A pragmatic prediction model based on two common ECG features, T wave inversion (TWI) and the amplitude of S wave in lead V1 (SV1), was developed to screen for HCM. The model showed good discriminative performance and may be useful for population-based HCM screening.

Mapping global lake dynamics reveals the emerging roles of small lakes

Xuehui Pi, Qiuqi Luo, Lian Feng, Yang Xu, Jing Tang, Xiuyu Liang, Enze Ma, Ran Cheng, Rasmus Fensholt, Martin Brandt, Xiaobin Cai, Luke Gibson, Junguo Liu, Chunmiao Zheng, Weifeng Li, Brett A. Bryan

Summary: Lakes are important natural resources and sources of carbon emissions, and they are undergoing rapid changes worldwide in response to climate change and human activities. Through a global characterization of lakes, we found that lake area has increased over the past four decades, with a significant contribution from reservoirs. Although small lakes account for a small percentage of the global lake area, they have a significant impact on the variability of total lake size. The increase in lake area has led to higher carbon emissions, with small lakes playing a major role.

Does the mainland China-Hong Kong exchange program change the views of local university students in Hong Kong on regional cooperation? A randomized control-group pre-test post-test experiment

Jianzheng Liu, Jie Li, Xiwen Zhang, Jing Song, Weifeng Li, Jiansheng Wu

Summary: Since 2012, the Chinese central government has implemented an intensive exchange program called the Mainland China-Hong Kong Ten Thousand Student Exchange Program to promote exchange and regional cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland China. This study investigates the impact of the program on local Hong Kong university students' views on regional cooperation. The findings show that while most students have positive views, a considerable percentage opposes integration with mainland China. The program is effective in changing students' views on specific aspects of regional cooperation, but not significantly effective on others.
