The fern family Blechnaceae, with about 250 species, has traditionally comprised one large genus, Blechnum, plus seven to nine smaller genera, most with fewer than 10 species. Several phylogenetic analyses strongly suggest that Blechnum in the traditional sense is not a monophyletic group. We propose a new classification for the family, with three subfamilies and 24 genera. All genera are described and new combinations are provided, with an estimate of species number for each genus. We also provide a key for the identification of the genera.

Summary: Secondary forests in the subtropical Atlantic Forest are important for landscape elements, providing carbon uptake, biodiversity recovery, and income for rural communities. The study found positive mean net changes in tree density, basal area, and aboveground biomass for all forest types, with evergreen rainforest having a significantly greater mean net change in aboveground biomass than other forest types. Structural diversity and wood density influenced annual rates of biomass gain and loss in the studied forests, suggesting different succession patterns among forest types.

Summary: In this study, the compounds Nemorosine A (1) and fargesine (2) were explored for their pharmacological effects on neurodegenerative disorders using a combined in silico-in vitro-in vivo approach. The compounds showed agonistic effects on the 5-HT2A receptor and demonstrated potential in reducing proteotoxicity and neurodegeneration in Caenorhabditis elegans models. These results contribute to the understanding of the compounds' multitarget profiles and support their potential in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

Summary: The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is a recognized global pattern of species richness. This study used high-resolution mapping and global forest inventory data to quantify the drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. The results showed that annual mean temperature was the dominant predictor of tree species richness, but in the tropics, high species richness was also influenced by local factors such as topography, soil, and human activity.

Summary: This study analyzed sequence data of the fern family Blechnaceae and found that the group originated in Eurasia in the late Cretaceous, and diversified mainly in the austral Pacific region during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. Long-distance dispersal is frequent and asymmetrical, with Australia and tropical America being major source areas; climate-mediated vicariance shaped current distributions.

Summary: Biodiversity is important for ecosystems, with higher species richness often leading to increased productivity. However, the relationship between biodiversity and productivity varies across environments and is less pronounced at high levels of species richness. Community evenness can mediate this relationship, and our study shows that it is negatively correlated with species richness and plays a crucial role in the biodiversity-productivity relationship.

Nicotiana azambujae (Solanaceae): A wild tobacco presumably extinct rediscovered after 73 years

Summary: Nicotiana azambujae is an endemic species from Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, that was rediscovered after 73 years of its last known collection. The first in vivo pictures of this species were taken, its conservation status was assessed, and its morphologic description and habitat preferences were updated. A possible mistake in the type of voucher label from the originally collected locality was also discussed.

Summary: Understanding the factors influencing global leaf type variation in trees is important for understanding their role in terrestrial ecosystems. Through a global assessment, integrating forest inventory data with leaf form and habit records, we found that leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Our results estimate the global proportions of different tree types and their corresponding biomass, and highlight the impact of climate change on future forest types.

A new species of Blechnum L. (Blechnaceae, Polypodiopsida) from central-western Brazil, with an updated key to the species in the country

Summary: In this study, a new species of Blechnum, Blechnum rivulorum sp. nov., is described from Mato Grosso, Brazil. The discovery of this new species was made during visits to several herbaria as part of the Reflora Project. The researchers also confirmed the presence of Blechnum meridense Klotzsch in Brazil and provided an updated key for identifying all species of Blechnum in the country.

Correlation of variations in species abundance of Atlantic forests regenerating on abandoned pastures with different environmental and spatial variables

Summary: The conversion of native forests into pastures is a common practice in Brazil, but abandoned pastures have the potential for natural regeneration and forest restoration. This study found that the variation in species abundance of regenerating forests on abandoned pastures is more closely related to environmental factors than to random spatial processes.

Diversity and Composition of a Seed Bank in the Subtropical Atlintic Forest, Southern Brazil

Summary: The current study evaluated the seed bank diversity and composition in the Municipal Natural Park Sao Francisco de Assis, Brazil. The results showed that most of the identified morphospecies were pioneers, and the predominant dispersion syndrome was zoochoric. The seeds were mainly provided by species occurring around the park and influenced by recent landslides in the area.
