Summary: This study investigated the biological role and mechanism of circZNF131 in gastric cancer (GC). The findings suggest that circZNF131 is upregulated in GC tissues and cells and promotes GC development through the miR-186-5p/PFKFB2 axis. These findings provide novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of GC.

Summary: Chronic inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure in drinking water is a global issue affecting over 225 million people, with skin being the major target organ for iAs. Dysregulation of miRNA and chromosomal instability (CIN) are proposed mechanisms of iAs-induced carcinogenesis. This study suggests that overexpression of miR-186 contributes to iAs-induced transformation of keratinocytes by targeting mitotic regulators and inducing CIN.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women worldwide. This study demonstrates that miR-186-5p inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis in breast cancer cells by targeting ANXA9. These findings provide a potential therapeutic target for breast cancer.

Summary: This study demonstrated for the first time that the long noncoding RNA SOX2-OT plays an important role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury through regulating the miR-186-5p/YY1 axis. Inhibition of SOX2-OT attenuated cardiomyocyte dysregulation induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R), with effects on relieving inflammation, promoting proliferation, and reducing apoptosis.

Summary: This study revealed that the expression levels of miR-372-3p were upregulated in placental tissues from patients with PE, especially in those with early-onset PE. In vitro analysis demonstrated that miR-372-3p overexpression inhibited trophoblast cell migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The study also found that miR-372-3p is sponged by twist1 and downregulating twist1 expression can rescue the inhibitory effects of miR-372-3p overexpression.

Summary: Research indicated that VCI patients had reduced levels of circRIMS2 and BDNF in their serum, along with increased miR-186 expression. Animal experiments demonstrated that aerobic exercise could alleviate VCI development through the circRIMS2/miR-186/BDNF axis.

Summary: MicroRNAs play a crucial role in regulating various aspects of cancer, including tumorigenesis, progression, metastasis, recurrence, and chemo-resistance. In this study, it was found that reduced expression of miR-186 in liver cancer stem cells promoted their self-renewal and tumorigenesis, while forced expression of miR-186 had the opposite effect. Mechanistically, miR-186 downregulated PTPN11 in liver cancer stem cells, and high levels of miR-186 in hepatocellular carcinoma patients were associated with better outcomes from TACE treatment.

Summary: The study revealed that miR-186-3p targets IGF1 and inhibits the proliferation and migration of CC cells while inducing apoptosis. IGF1 can reverse the effects of miR-186-3p on CC cell behaviors. This suggests that targeting IGF1 by miR-186-3p may play a crucial role in regulating CC progression.

Summary: Circ0038632 is upregulated in osteosarcoma and its inhibition reduces cell proliferation and metastasis abilities. It acts by sponging miR-186 to upregulate the expression of DNMT3A, thereby promoting osteosarcoma progression. These findings highlight the potential of circ0038632 as a diagnostic biomarker for osteosarcoma progression.

Summary: This study found that miR-653-3p is highly expressed in CRC cells and promotes the development of CRC through mechanisms such as increasing DNA damage, inhibiting apoptosis, and promoting chromosomal instability. MiR-653-3p regulates the SIRT1/TWIST1 signaling pathway to control genomic instability, proliferation, migration, and chemoresistance of CRC cells.
